Re: Frequently asked questions
.avi is a bad, terrible container that has a lot of overheads and generally doesn't support most modern encoding formats. Really, we shouldn't be using it for our SD either, but there you go.
I think the question you're really looking for is "why are your HD encodes using h264 rather than xvid", which is something not immediately obvious from the filenames. The filenames are purely what we call 'container formats' - they're a specific way of containing the video and sound that your player will play back. They can have many different formats inside them, though. Technically we can have a .avi using the same encoding method as our HD videos (though not to be recommended!) or a modern container (such as .mkv) using the same method as the SDs.
Basically, the SD versions use the Xvid codec which was developed - and really kind of died - around the mid-00s. It's not a particularly great codec for modern usage, and has some fairly glaring encoding faults, but it's tolerable enough for video where quality isn't that big an issue, and it also has very low playback requirements, which means it was generally suited to playback on machines that were common around that period in time.
The HD versions use h264, which is a modern codec that's constantly being improved and made more efficient. It has better compressability - meaning you get more quality for the same filesize. It can also deliver a maximum higher quality level than xvid, which suffers when dealing with bright reds and other things. The downside is, as you may guess, it needs a more powerful machine to play back.
Nowadays, using the correct tools to play back videos (MPC-HC with CCCP on a computer) most devices made in the last 5 years or so should have no problem playing back h264/.mp4 at SD resolutions. I would like to hope Xvid will finally get to rest in the graveyard of encoding obscurity fairly soon.

Google Translate and Babelfish combined with excessive quantities of alcohol and general bullshittery, as well as tireless editors who do all the work themselves.

Re: Frequently asked questions
For the media gallery, are we only supposed to submit a toku related media or is it anything goes (as long as it doesn't go against the rule)?
