Bleach
So I'm reading volume 10 of Bleach and there are these two signs.
"The law"
"of the jungle"
Which is fine, but what the signs really say are:
"The weak are meat"
"The strong eat"
In my version they even rhyme XD

Re: Bleach
Another thing that bothers me about the translations is that honorifics and other stuff aren't respected.
I finished reading the part where Rukia is yelling out "Onii-sama!" and the translator put down "Byakuya" which kind of makes me cringe because it's so not right. First and last names are reversed.
The line where Byakuya goes "Will Ichigo keep calling me by my first name?" doesn't make sense since it was all switched to first names in the translations anyway.
Another thing that seems weird is Gin has no accent. Plus there's swearing, which is noticeble in some places where it's really justified
This is why commercial translations are stupid

I am more curious as of why there aren't more people like you working in companies for us poor fans? How in the world did they find those types of people that does a lousy subtitles or translations job? o.O
Do you read the raws first then the translated version of manga?

One of the things I don't like about doing commercial translations is that you're under a lot of constraints. Like with the Bleach target audience being older kids/young adults, that's probably why all the swears were left out.
Another thing is that a commercial release needs to avoid offending people. Since we're not motivated by money, we don't have to worry about staying faithful to the original work, since it's not like we lose profit if people's sensibilities are offended. But commercial companies don't want to do that. So stuff like in Card Captor Sakura's translation with the implications of incest or homosexuality are played down, even though they were a part of the original work
>Do you read the raws first then the translated version of manga?
It depends. I mostly read translations since it's at the library and it's free. Getting the original manga is cheaper, but I'd actually need to pay money for that.

Re: Bleach
I have found some of the manga's translations to be a bit out there. For example, in volume 2, chapter 14, Tatsuki's line about Orihime's panties showing was changed to "You're flashing the quad!" which I have never heard of anybody saying in my life. Then, in volume 3, chapter 25, Isshin's line about the woman he married being willing to give her life to protect her child was changed to simply "That child was you". The large speech bubbles there don't help the minimal text. I'm just glad they stopped referring to Ichigo as "Strawberry". Still, they seem better than the Naruto translations, which are pretty much pulled from nowhere.

Re: Bleach
Manga wise, I stopped when ex-3 was about to fight 5. ... only reason I'm being so vague is to avoid spoilers without having to involve spoiler tags which people who may or may not being at this point will open either way. Though I have been keeping up with the anime, but I won't go into that since this is a manga thread/topic.

Spoiler
My interest dropped when I saw Ichigo. XD I wanted to know more about the past arc and the ex-captains or the ex captains-to-be. It ended too quickly.
I hear people say things like "It makes me sad that Bleach is coming to an end", but if each captain/important character gets a fight and every fights last for 1 volume, and if Ichigo fights during 2-3 volumes, the series is nowhere near the end. Every one just recovers so magically that their "extreme suffering" scenes don't mean anything anymore.

Re: Bleach
Spoiler
I don't know, Bleach was fun but when it became Bleeeeach (sound of vomiting) i honestly lost interest =x Like how Naruto became Narutard... I might be overreacting but I read the manga even before the anime came out (for both series; cause i'm darn spoiled with Shounen Jump titles); but when the anime came out - maaan - it became tooo darn popular that when a girl asks me on the phone what i'm doing and when i replied i'm reading Bleach she'll reply "how shallow of you" >_> (that goes also to Narutard)
/me becoming random XD

Re: Bleach
*le sigh* As far as I can tell, it's the characters that make BLEACH what it is. Of course the plots presented are pretty much cookie-cutter Shounen material, but BLEACH has that certain 'cool' factor to it in its presentation of the Shounen manga formula we've all come to learn, understand and (possibly) love.

I'm with you 100%, and I'm looking forward to finding out what Ulquiorra's release looks like, if we see it in the imminent future. At least he's finally drawn his sword.KrimzonKaiser wrote:Anyone else besides me up-and-current with BLEACH and can't wait for what happens in the upcoming chapter 318?
