Graphic Novel must-read list
In my opinion, they are:
Sandman -Neil Gaiman
Anything by Alan Moore: V for Vendetta, Promethea, Watcherman, Swampman. Maybe not Lost Girls
There's probably more, but I'm sucking at the moment

I'd I agree with Sandman, and mention Watchmen, although people tend to class it as overrated.

Agreed, Maus is one of the best graphic novels I've ever read.
Fables series. If you like Sandman, you'll like Fables.

Re: Graphic Novel must-read list
V for Vendetta and Watchmen are definitely on this list.
I heard Alan Moore's From Hell is good too.
If you like The Walking Dead, give the series a shot.
If you like Batman, here are my suggestions:
Batman: Year One
The Dark Knight Returns
Dark Night: A true Batman Story
Batman Adventures: Mad Love
Batman: War on Crime
Arkham Asylum: A serious house on serious Earth
Batman: R.I.P
Batman: Ego
Batman: Gotham by Gaslight
Batman Damned
Joker

Re: Graphic Novel must-read list
Definitely agreed on Dark Knight Returns; what a masterpiece.
I'd recommend Daredevil's Born Again and (if it counts) X-men's Dark Phoenix saga; Kingdom Come may be on the list too. What's So Funny About Truth, Justice and the American Way is excellent, although it's a one-shot comic rather than a graphic novel.
I'll also throw The Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck on the list. Some surprisingly deep stuff in there.
Not sure the story's good enough to justify putting it on here, but the art on Cromwell Stone makes the experience pretty astounding.

Re: Graphic Novel must-read list
I don't read much hero stories nowadays, but I'll put the life and times of scrooge on my to-read list
I really liked Lazarus, it's about these badass immortals in the future
If you want a story about French people traveling in the aether in the 1800s, check out Castle in the Stars, it's beautiful
Anything by Sarah Andersen (of Sarah's Scribbles fame) is pretty fun
Like the Strange Planet comics
Cul de Sac is an underrated comic that was tragically cut short. If you like Calvin and Hobbes, it's worth checking out

Re: Graphic Novel must-read list
I never really dig deep into comics. I just collect comics that are considered by people as classic and famous stories for decades.takenoko wrote: ↑Tue Oct 06, 2020 6:57 pm I don't read much hero stories nowadays, but I'll put the life and times of scrooge on my to-read list

Basically, it's my first time hearing the comics you mentioned. I had to Google them.
Is Lazarus by Greg Rucka and Michael Lark? Castle in the Stars by Alex Alice?

Do you own a copy yourself? Comic book, paperback, or the artist edition of both paperback and hardcover?
Dark Phoenix:
I'm just asking how famous is this story? Why did this have to be made into the movie version, but got screwed up eventually?
Kingdom Come:
This one should be on the list too because Alex Ross's amazing artwork and interpretation.

Re: Graphic Novel must-read list
Dark Phoenix is stupidly iconic. Probably the most iconic X-Men story and one of the most iconic Marvel ones.
Considering they used the story in both movie iterations of X-Men to some capacity, it should say a lot.

Someone suggested me to read Evan Dorkin's Eltingville Club because its many characters are caricatures of toxic geekdom.

Yeah, Stone is pretty obscure; they only recently released a good hardcover, but I felt the art earned it an honorable mention. Re Born Again, my dad has a paperback copy (he's a pretty big comic buff, which is how I got into it).decade368990 wrote: ↑Tue Oct 06, 2020 11:02 pm DareDevil Born Again:
