Keitai Sousakan 7 Blu-Ray Revisit Project FAQ

Post by XIII »

With the advent of Blu-Ray's and our desire to see things in a much better light, we have come to do Keitai Sousakan 7 from the Blu-Rays. So for the revisit I have created a small FAQ with some trivial information to show the scale of the project.
  • Project began 20th Feb 2015
-Decided to complete the revisit before releasing any eps to ensure a smoother run and not one that drags on for years.
-Source is Blu-Rays that I own
    -Source files are 1080i @ 29.97 fps
    -Encoded files are 1080p @ 23.976 fps and 480p @ 23.976 fps
-No 720p encodes are likely to be done
-Source files size is 380GB after de-crypting from Blu-Rays
-Distro files are 42.2GB and there are 11 files (Both SD and HD)
-Re-typesetting and Re-syncing an ep takes on average 1 hour, some eps took longer to complete
-Styles for Seven, Third, Gene and 01 are now consistent across all the eps
-Where a Directors Cut exists, the Theatrical Cut wont be released.
-Average script length is 425 lines (pre-karaoke for songs)
-Mutters 1 and 2 while they are released in HD aren't actually filmed in HD. They were upscaled versions on the Blu-Rays, quality can be subjective on these as to if it works fully or not.
-Keitaihen da karaoke tried to break my PC with its many effects and 77368 lines in the script

By all means this hasnt been a small project, it has been one that has run for a while and taken a lot of time up on my end and with a QC that went through the eps to ensure that all changes made during the revisit were good and that we have no issues.

On a final note, I have to thank all the original staff members who worked on this and made the transition a bit easier to complete the revisit compared to the other two revisits that I have worked on.

I noticed that the frame rate on the Blu-ray's is listed at 29.97 fps. Is there a reason why it is down to 23.976 for the finalized version?
Is it something to do with conversion from interlaced to progressive from the source?

Also was the Blu-ray source listed at 1080i? I've tried to find a reverse side of the cover art, but the resolution was poor.

Still, this is my favorite series that you folks have done over the years.

I don't own the Blu-rays, but I think we were going off the original frame rate for the TV series when it aired. Keitai Sousakan 7 is the first Japanese series that I saw on Blu-ray, so I wouldn't be surprised if the publisher hadn't gotten the formatting down perfectly yet.

The cover does actually say 1080p.

Spoiler
Image

However the videos are 1080i.

These are the tech specs of the video file as pulled off the blu-ray

Code: Select all

Stream Type: AVC Elementary
Profile: High
Level: 4.1
Frame Size: 1920x1080
SAR: 1:1
Display Size: 1920x1080
Frame Rate: 29.970030 fps
Colorimetry: BT.709* [2]
Frame Structure: Fields (TFF)
Frame Type: not yet
Coded Number: 67217
Playback Number: 82299
Frame Repeats: 0
Field Repeats: 30165
Bitrate: 7.919
Bitrate (Avg): 32.211
Bitrate (Max): 49.483
It was a lot of trail and error to get these to IVTC as the standard methods we used resulted in some strange frame duplication. Sure we could have just done a de-interlace and left it at 29.97, but its better to IVTC these.

Also, yay, first practical use of my scanner

Thank you for the cover scan.

And congratulations to a successful first scan.

Yeah, that framerate discrepancy threw me off at first.

I was a little concerned at first since some parts of the original 720p versions of KS7 had some of the same motion issues that Cutie Honey THE LIVE in the first HD batch v1 had a few years back. Granted, I did not have that first batch, but the post description a few years back was somewhat clicking in my head regarding frame rate and video motion.

(I don't know if I'm making sense anymore, but I'm confident that you folks know what you're doing)

Great to see my favorite series here getting the Blu-ray treatment.

(Imagine the 2020s and going for a ridiculous 4K push on something.)

CHtL V1 files was an oversight of assuming the files were 23.976 when they were 29.97, back then thou, we didnt have our own source material to do it properly and were at the mercy of what was out there.

The original 720p files we released were from TV rips and probably didnt have a decent IVTC job on them, hence the motion issue.

We are getting pretty good at dealing with the strange aspects of Japanese broadcasts and formatting. hybrid interlacing is still the most annoying aspect to deal with (thats where they mix progressive and interlaced videos, Garo is the main culprit for that). And then you occasionally have VFR (Variable Frame Rate), which again can be a pain to deal with. Never a dull moment with video processing

All your answers can be found on our wiki page:

I think that lady is Mitsuya Youko, who plays Asano Touko (has short hair on the show).
