47 Ronin
Any one see it yet?
I just did. It wasn't bad but it wasn't good.
I felt like it dropped the ball on all the fantasy elements though. I wished those would have been much stronger.
I don't think I'll ever fully understand the concept of a Samurai's honor. But I suppose that's something only someone with a Japanese Soul would be able to truly comprehend.
Oh and KyouryuuGray's actor was in the movie. I was pretty surprised at that.

Re: 47 Ronin
I read the kotaku review on it, and it sounds like what I had expected. Seems like a dumb Hollywood schlock version of the 47 Samurai story.

Yeah it was lacking but I still enjoyed it.
And I generally don't like Kotaku but the review was actual fair, so good for them.
And Take you know Japanese, right?
It is pronounced as Ro NEEN?

Re: 47 Ronin
Ugh, that's probably just bad pronunciation. It would be pronounced the same as nin in ninja.
One thing to point out is that it's a long o in ronin, so we'd probably have spelled it as rounin. Another bit of trivia is that modern "ronin" are Japanese youth who can't get into a university.
Rounin 浪人 (n,vs) (1) ronin, lordless samurai, (2) out of work, (3) waiting for another chance to enter a university,
Rurounin 流浪人 (n) wanderer
Rurou ni 流浪 に (n) vagrancy, wandering, nomadism, (P)
Rurouni Kenshin

Re: 47 Ronin
Nice to see they still find a way to use the word even if Samurai and Lords aren't around anymore.
So it's not een, like in spleen?

Re: 47 Ronin
No, it should be a short/sharp sound.
You know it's badly done if Canadian voice actors have a better pronunciation:

Hmm...that show looks awfully familiar.
So this way is the right one?

Re: 47 Ronin
I see, I see. But what about like the opening to Shougeki.
The singer pronounces the "nin" part of Go-nin with a long e sound. Or at least that's what it sounds like to an untrained ear(me).
Does it have anything to do with the structure of the word?

Re: 47 Ronin
You are correct in identifying that nin as being the same one in ronin. I'd just attribute it to it being a song, which has more stresses and emphasis than normal speech.
Linguistically, sometimes a followup sound is dependent on the sound before or after because it just makes it easier to make the sound. I can't think of any good examples off the top of my head, but even in English, you probably say the same word or sound differently depending on the sounds around it.
I dunno, maybe we can bug Luna for her insights. Since she actually lives in Japan she can probably answer this with more authority than myself.

Re: 47 Ronin
I would just say it's because it's a song and sometimes pronounced a bit weird. I don't really have any better answer than that.

Re: 47 Ronin
Bit of a strange film, but entertaining in parts,
The self sacrifice is always a noble thing, but at the end when they were doing there thing, I kept thinking "Your soul is mine!" since the actor who plays the Shougun also played Shang Tsung in Mortal Kombat
