Summer 2011 Anime

Post by Phoenix512 »

It's summer. The sun is shining but it's too hot to do anything outside. So the next best thing is a nice air-conditioned room and watch the latest anime from Japan. So far I just watch one so far but it's another to start this thread though.

Ro-Kyu-Bu

It's based from a sports comedy light novel series which a high school freshman named Subaru Hasegawa coaches an elementary school girls' basketball team after his high school basketball club was put on a year suspension because of the captain's (not the same person) attempts to hook up with the adviser's elementary school age daughter. Also Subaru was conned into it by his Aunt Miho who is the adviser of the team.

As for the girls themselves, only one of them is actually any good at basketball which is Tomoka Minato. The other four have rather unique personalities that would seem that they would ever do basketball. Saki Nagatsuka enjoys reading books and even reads basketball manga to help her to learn the game. Airi Kashii is tallest girl on the team and doesn't like it. She's also rather clumsy and gets startled very easily. Hinata Hakamada is the most childlike of the group being the shortest and also has a thing for drawing. And finally there's Maho Misawa who loves video games and tends to be extreme with her planning (like making everyone dressed as maids when Subaru first meets them).

There seem to be a reason why the girls are trying so hard to impress Subaru to be their permanent coach since he was only willing to give them three days. The reason is related to Tomoka but the first episode doesn't go into that. I guess the second episode might explain it.

I didn't really see much comedy in the first episode but mostly drama. I'm not too sure about this series but I'll give it a couple more episodes before deciding to stay with it or not.

Ikoku Meiro no Croisée

From the illustrator of the Gosick novels, it's about a Japanese girl named Yune who travels with an old ironworks smith named Oscar to Paris in the second half of the 1800s. He brought her to be a mascot because of the popularity of Japanese culture in France at the time. His nephew, Claude runs the shop and didn't like the idea of having Yune to work at the shop.

Yune tries desperately get Claude's favor but eventually fails after breaking the glass of a butterfly sign. As an apology, she gives a kimono that was very expensive to him. Later that night he sells it except he didn't know that the kimono was her mother's keepsake. But through this, he gains an understanding of Yune and accepts her.

It's a nice slice of life series except takes place in late 1800s Paris. The culture clash between French and Japanese will be interesting as Claude and Yune's relationship grows.

Kamisama no Memo-chou (God's Notebook)

Based on a series of light novels, it involves a group of NEETs (mostly) who solve crimes. The main character, Narumi Fujishima, moves around a lot and tends to avoid making relationships with other people even though he doesn't completely isolated himself from the outside world. His world changes when a fellow classmate named Ayaka Shinozaki forces him to be a member of the Gardening Club. One day while walking home, Ayaka shows him where she works part-time which is a ramen shop called the Hanamaru. There, Narumi encounters three guys who he ran into before.

These guys make up the field operatives of the NEET Detective group which ranged from a high school dropout who plays pachinko but has connections with the police, an university student who's a military otaku and only enrolls in university to use the library, and a host. But there's one who rarely goes outside and her name is Alice. She lives in a room with lots of computers, a fridge full of DoKupe, and lots of stuffed animals. She is the brains of the NEET detective group and has ties to a group of yakuza which the leader sews her stuffed animals from time to time and the henchmen are computer illiterate.

The first episode is 48 minutes long but the rest of the series should be regular length episodes. It setups the characters while trying to solve a case of compensated dating. I really like the interactions between Narumi and Alice. I especially like the part where Alice explains why she's a NEET detective and explain the title of the series in the process. I'll definitely keep watching this series.

Sacred Seven

It's being called "School Battle Action" which has a high school student named Arma Tandouji who possess the power of a Darkstone. Three years ago, this power made him berserk and injured 18 students in the process. Since then, he was shunned by everyone except for one, a girl named Wakana. She tries to encourage him to join her club but he refuses to do and even her friends don't want him to join. While all this is going on, a stone statue with the power of Medusa awakens which attracts the attention of a rich girl named Ruri Aiba. She tries to stop the monster with her resources which consists of a mecha-piloting butler and an army of maids. But she needs Arma's power to stop it for good.

The Sacred Seven probably refers to the number of possible weapons that Arma possesses when he finally controls his power. Looks like it's all out action but there's at least there's an enemy that doing stuff behind the scenes. I can't wait for the next episode of the interactions of Arma and Ruri at school.

Blade

The last of the Marvel animes. Blade is a half human/vampire who has all the strengths of a vampire but none of the weaknesses. The first episode shows how Blade came to be when his mother was bitten by a vampire (later to be revealed in the episode as Deacon Frost) in London. Fast forward to the present in Yokohama where Blade finds out the base for the Existence is a club called the Feed. But before Blade gets to the Feed, it was already under attack by a father/daughter pair of vampire hunters.

It looks like the series will involve Blade's attempts to get revenge on Deacon Frost even though he's clearly outmatched by him while may also have to fend off attacks from the daughter vampire hunter since Blade killed her father after he was turned into a vampire. The series the same animation style of Iron Man and Wolverine compared to the style used in X-Men. Also Blade is voiced by the same guy who voiced Solid Snake in the Metal Gear Solid series. So he really has a bad ass voice.

I watched a couple more during the week but haven't posted them until now. Two of them are basically 3 minutes long and won't really go into them. So they are Morita-san wa Mukuchi and Nyanpire The Animation which you should at least watch Nyanpire for the ED sequence. I'll talk about two other ones now.

Kaitou Tenshi Twin Angel Kyun Kyun Tokimeki Paradise!

This is a magical girl anime based off from cute slot machine mascots. Two high school girls transform into the magical girl pair known as Twin Angel to fight evil at night. The two girls have different backgrounds but able to co-exist well. It's listed as a parody of the genre which you have a gas that transforms whoever inhales it into cats (like Twin Angel themselves) and a clone of Tuxedo Kamen that goes by the name of Misty Knight (I only wish).

I found it to be a bit boring and not really that funny. There wasn't really anything about it that made me to watch a few more episodes of it before deciding in the long haul. There's also a butler that appears from the floor of the school as well.

YuruYuri

A comedy series about a group of middle school girls using the former tea ceremony clubroom for their own Amusement Club. You have jokes like the main character doesn't really have enough presence, the main character's older sister has an obsession with her, and one of the girls look like an anime character that one of the other characters make doujinishi for. I thought the first episode was a bit funny and probably watch a couple more episodes before deciding to continue it til the end.

Right now, I have a bunch of summer stuff that's waiting to be watch but there should be some good ones like Blood-C and idolMASTER.

Mayo Chiki

Based on a light novel series, Mayo Chiki is the shorten form of the full title, Mayoeru Shitsuji to Chikin na Ore to (The Wavering Butler and Myself the Chicken). It's about a guy named Sakamachi Kinjiro who discovers the secret of Suzutsuki Kanade's butler, Konoe Subaru. Basically Konoe is really a girl not a boy and the reason why she dresses like a butler is because her family has been the butler for Suzutsuki family for generations. Since Subaru is an only child, she wanted to continue the line but as a condition, she must not reveal her true gender. So after being tied to a bed in chains, Kinjiro is forced to keep the secret by Suzutsuki and begins his hellish school life.

It's basically a comedy with most of the scenes come from either Kinjiro trying to avoid getting beat up by either his sister or Konoe along with the sadist joys of Suzutsuki. I enjoyed watching the first episode and definitely watch more of it.

Usagi Drop (Bunny Drop)

Based on a manga series, it airs on the noitaminA block which I have talked about before in the past. It's about a 30 year-old man named Daikichi who comes back home for his grandfather's funeral. He discovers that his grandfather had another kid named Rin six years ago with a woman that wasn't his grandmother. The rest of the family basically wants nothing to do with her which really annoyed Daikichi. When the idea that she should be placed in foster care came up, Daikichi decided to take in Rin even though he's single and really has no idea to raise a kid.

The first episode basically covers how Rin ends up with Daikichi and doesn't go into how they will live together which is the main point of the series. It's probably a bit slow but I think I will overlook that since it's interesting to me.

Kamisama Dolls

Adapted from a manga, it's about a college student named Kuga Kyohei who abandon his duties as a Seki of his village and went off to college in Tokyo. One day while on a group date, he and his old neighbor, Shiba Hibino, which he has a crush on, discover a dead body in an elevator. He recalls an incident from his past that was similar to how the body appear which was only confirmed when his younger sister, Utao appears. She confirms that an old friend of Kyohei's, Aki, has escaped from the village and appear in Tokyo. Soon afterwards, Aki appears in Kyohei's apartment which Aki and Utao fought with Dolls which are basically summoned robots. After Utao destroys Kyohei's place with her Doll, they moved in with Hibino since her father was a resident of the village.

It's a rather dark series which you have the main character trying to escape his past only failing in the end. But I have to wonder if it will be focused on Aki and his Doll alone. Will there be another antagonist to make the series fresh? I'll guess I will find out as I watch more of the series.

Itsuka Tenma no Kurousagi (A Dark Rabbit Has Seven Lives)

Based on a light novel series, it's about a high school freshman named Kurogane Taito who nine years ago met a girl named Himea who at the time gives him immortality but he has forgotten about it except when he's dreaming. He remembers Himea when he loses his head in a car accident to save someone. The immortality kicks in and restores Taito's body like nothing has happened. This also allows Himea to escape from her prison which how she was imprisoned is a mystery at this point. These two are intertwined with the student council president, Kurenai Gekkou, who seems to have supernatural skills but with the most arrogant personality possible.

There is a bit of mystery with how Taito forgotten Himea for all those years and how Gekkou seems to interfere with them nine years ago and now. It's a more serious version of Kore wa Zombie Deskau. I'm certainly interested in it.

R-15

Another light novel series which Taketo Akutagawa is a student of the Inspiration High School which allows geniuses to nurture their unique talents. Taketo's unique talent is being able to write very good porn novels but the drawback is that all girls in the school pretty much hate him except for the Chief of the Newspaper Club (she might be a yazuka princess from the bodyguards). So it's mostly be about the situations he get himself into like in the first episode where he has to interview Fukune Narukara who is a genius with the clarinet. Taketo is reluctant to interview her since he almost ate one of her reeds which he got a boulder to the head from Fukune.

The series is going to be highly perverted and don't really like the censorship. It's too excess in how they do it and what they do with it. It seems like all panty and bra shots are censored as well and really gets annoying. I'll probably watch a couple more episodes before I give up or not.

Dantalian no Shoka (Bibliotheca Mystica de Dantalian)

Based on a light novel series, a pilot named Hugh Anthony Disward (Huey) returns to his grandfather's house after receiving a letter about his death. Huey's grandfather died due to a burglar stealing a book since he was famous for collecting rare books. Discovering a secret room, Huey finds a girl named Dalian who seem to be a friend of his grandfather. They set off to the mansion of Huey's grandfather's rival, Henry Conrad, since he would wanted the rare book the most.

When arriving at the house, they find the house to be mostly destroyed by various animals and circus folk made of ash. This is the power of the Phantom Book known as the Harlequinade when used in the wrong hands. Eventually they encounter a dragon which at that point, Dalian sees the value of Huey and allows him to gain access the Bibliotheca Mystica de Dantalian (Dantalian is actually the demon of knowledge) which contains 900,666 sealed Phantom Books. Using one of the Phantom Books, he manages to defeat the dragon and eventually seal the Harlequinade.

The setting is probably early 20th century but I can't determine more of an exact date. I'm not sure how the series will go but I would guess that Huey and Dalian would be sealing Phantom Books while making sure that no one else steals books from them as well. Probably the next episode will determine how the series would go.

No. 6

Based on a nine-volume novel series, it's about a futuristic city No. 6, which is the last of the six cities built on the remaining land on Earth which lost most of the land due to a natural disaster. Shion is a 12 year old boy who is an elite genius who harbors a fugitive kid during a typhoon.

Apparently there will be a four year time skip after the first episode and deals with the fallout of Shion's choice. But basically the first episode setups how Shion begins to think about the world beyond the idealistic existence that he has been taught as a kid. I say it's definitely needs a few episodes to determine if it's worth watching or not but being on the noitaminA block helps its chances.

THE IDOLM@STER

Based on an XBox game, it follows a group of thirteen pop idols from 765 Production Studios as they try to become top idols. The first episode is unique because it's like a documentary which the cameraman would ask questions but you don't hear him speak. So the episode introduces all the girls which they have a screw loose in their heads. In the end of the episode, it's revealed that the cameraman is actually the newly-hired producer.

Even though I enjoyed the uniqueness of the first episode and the reveal at the end, the cast of characters is a bit too much. I can't see how they can focus on all 13 without the quality the show suffering. It's okay to have 13 characters in a game since you can give attention to each character but it doesn't work for an anime though. I will cut my losses and stop watching it.

Mawaru Penguindrum

This anime isn't based on anything which is an odd thing but it's from the director of Revolutionary Girl Utena. It's about twin brothers, Kanba and Shoma, who are tasked to find the Penguin Drum by a spirit who resides in a penguin hat. This hat is normally worn by their sister, Himari, who was terminally ill but got a life extension by the penguin spirit which wants the Penguin Drum in return for the favor. The penguin spirit gives them three penguins to help the brothers in their task but they and Himari can only see them.

This anime is a bit bizarre (especially when the penguin spirit takes over Himari the second time) but then again, it is from the same guy who directed Utena (watch the final third of the Utena movie for really bizarre). It has some serious themes which the brothers love Himari so much and Kanba questions if God and fate exists when Himari is dying at such a young age. The first episode ends with Kanba kissing Himari on the lips shortly after the penguin spirit tells him and Shoma to find the Penguin Drum which at this point is unknown. I think it will be a good anime to watch especially if it's the quality of Utena.

Manyuu Hikenchou (Magic Breast Secret Scroll)

Based on a manga, it takes place during the Tokugawa shogunate where huge breasts guaranteed wealth and popularity (that's true here in the modern age but there's a catch). There's a clan called the Manyuu Clan that has the hidden knowledge to produce big and beautiful breasts. One day, the successor of the clan, Chifusa, steals the secret scroll and runs away with it barely after getting shot by her sister, Kagefusa. Chifusa spends a week recovering at a house of a woman who lost her big breasts by Kagefusa from a tit hunt. Kagefusa manages to find Chifusa and tries to cut her breasts with the help of Chifusa's friend, Kaede, who lost her big breasts from betraying the Manyuu Clan. Kaede in the end helps Chifusa which she cuts Kagefusa's breasts. Not only Kagefusa's breasts shrinks, but Chifusa's own breasts grew to the size of Kagefusa's old breast size. And now Chifusa and Kaede will go throughout the country and spread the secret of getting big breasts.

So you can tell it's rather a perverted anime but like with Freezing, it's heavily censored. There's a uncensored webcast of it but it's not in HD though. The ATX version of it is mostly uncensored except for the sexual acts and breast cutting. I initially thought when reading the short summary of it that it was going to be comedic but it's not the case at all. It's going to be a very interesting series to watch.

Blood-C

Another offshoot of the Blood: The Last Vampire franchise, Blood-C uses CLAMP character designs. So like in the movie and Blood+, the main character is a high-school girl named Saya but this time, there doesn't seem to be a connection that she's a vampire. It doesn't mean that she doesn't possess special skills at all. She's incredibly athletic and kind but rather clumsy and the kindness makes her late to school at a consistent basis. She appears to be a normal girl with friends and practices as a miko at the family shrine but there's another side to her. She has to face various trials which involves slaying demons like the one in the first episode which is a stone statue in form of a priest but can grow a set of pincers with an adjustable neck.

It's rather different compared to the The Last Vampire and Blood+ but it maintains the violence and massive amounts of blood being spilled. This Saya isn't all moody like the previous two versions but she harbors some darkness as she tries to interpret her visions. Currently it's unknown why she is fighting in the trials but I guess the mystery will slowly be reveal. So bring on some more Blood-C.
