Sha Fu's name origin?

Post by Kimbles »

I don't know if this has been answered before, but what is the origin of Master Sha Fu's name?

I haven't watched Gekiranger, but here's the thing: In Medarot 7 (a Medabots game for 3DS), there is a caracal-themed Medabot named シャーフー (Shaafuu), and the Japanese fansites I've looked at all say it's named after Master Sha Fu in Gekiranger. (I'm guessing it might mean something in Chinese that relates to a caracal?) I've also seen it spelled Xia Fu but I couldn't find anything about how it would be written in Chinese or what it means.
If you have any insight, please let me know!

I believe it's the Chinese word for Master:
师傅 shī fu

It looks like 师傅 is usually rendered as シー フ in katakana, but it would make sense... After a bit of searching I also found that シャー and フー can be the sounds of cats hissing, so I wonder if it might have been intended as a play on both?

Yeah, the pronunciation would be shii fuu, I think. Dunno why it was sha. I always assumed it was some dialect thing, but maybe there's a double pun going on there.
