Favourite Japanese games
What are your favourite Japanese games? I have J-League Winning Eleven 5, 6 & 8 and World Soccer Winning Eleven 5 & 10 (PS2, I'm playing in them in my emulator).

Re: Favourite Japanese games
I grew up on Nintendo games. I love the Metal Gear and Monster Hunter series.
Lately I've been really into the Souls series (Demon's Souls and Dark Souls).
The Team Ico games are to video games as Studio Ghibli is to anime. They're both artistic and give you this profound feeling when you play them. Shadow of the Colossus in particular is really amazing.

Lol, guess I'm gonna be the first to use this generic answers.
I really do enjoy games like the Tales Series,Final Fantasy, and Star Ocean. Those three series are probably some of my favorite.

I really liked Final Fantasy up until 6. From 6 on, they delved too much into technology and creating quirky worlds to me. I prefer it be more fantasy/medieval heavy with a sprinkling of anachronistic technology.
I greatly dislike the Alice in Wonderland nature of having quirky worlds and quirky things for the sake of quirkiness.

Gotta go with Super Robot Wars. I have a very basic understanding of Japanese, but can't read a bit of it, but I loved those games enough to finish two of them by just understanding facial expressions and what made things go boom the fastest :p

Really? I actually liked the technology part of it.takenoko wrote:I really liked Final Fantasy up until 6. From 6 on, they delved too much into technology and creating quirky worlds to me. I prefer it be more fantasy/medieval heavy with a sprinkling of anachronistic technology.

I mean, if not for that deviation from the strictly fantasy we wouldn't have gotten the Gunblade. I love the Gunblade, lol can't imagine a world without it.
And by quirky what exactly do you mean? Or rather, which game comes to mind when you think of the quirky worlds.

Re: Favourite Japanese games
For the quirky stuff, I think the best example was Final Fantasy Unlimited, where they'd go from world to world, but it weird for the sake of being weird isn't interesting. Like why would I want to see a world of fruit eaters? That's dumb.
And the technology thing mixing with fantasy is okay to a limit. But at a certain point I think it's juggling too many different concepts. Like I recently became aware of this game called Shadowrun, which has dwarves and elves running around in cyber punk Chicago. At a certain point, you're asking me to buy too many disparate elements. That just takes me out of the world.

Yeah, that last concept does seem like it might be a bit too much going on.takenoko wrote:For the quirky stuff, I think the best example was Final Fantasy Unlimited, where they'd go from world to world, but it weird for the sake of being weird isn't interesting. I don't know if you've played any of the Star Oceans, but I think those games how a nice mix of fantasy and technology.

Metal Gear. It's the only series that I've been following since my childhood.

Re: Favourite Japanese games
I'm all about the Shin Megami Tensei series and its spinoffs (Persona, Devil Summoner, Devil Survivor). I used to be really big into Final Fantasy but I felt the stories in the last several were really bad. As far as I'm concerned, 12 and 13 had the exact same plot. (I'm hopeful for 15, though.)

I enjoy JRPGs but I feel they restrict my freedom too much most of the time. I'm very fond of the Dynasty Warriors series though.
