Learn Japanese with Morpheem

Post by takenoko »

http://jp.morpheem.com

So this came across my tumblr. Dunno how good it is, but I'll play with it at work when I'm bored. I did the test and it said I knew 6720 words. Seems kind of low, but my kanji comprehension is pretty bad.

This is really nice! I've always been so lazy to learn Japanese because it's so boring when there's nothing motivating me to do so.

It says I know 150 words :(

I set my goal to have the vocabulary of a 7 year old by July. Seems too ambitious...

Mine was 280... but I was using my Mandarin knowledge and not Japanese to interpret the kanji.

1,470. Sounds about right. My kanji is pretty good so I can read a lot of Japanese and understand a decent amount. Honestly my time is better spent learning grammar.

As for my goals in Japanese, the first goal is to communicate and travel. I do eventually want to do some short term research work in Japan as part of my PhD. Apparently I need between 2,000 and 3,850 in order to reach those levels....which seems a bit low.

As for the site, it does look pretty cool and helpful. I like how it uses sentences to learn. I feel like this is the next step I need.

I have to admit that I meant to visit morpheem daily, but I've only returned to it once at work. I need to hit it again and get some practice in.

So far I've tried, I think it's useful to some extent.

However it seems that everything is automated, so it doesn't actually teach you compound words.

Example: (I can't remember something I encountered, so I'll give my own example) hashiri-dasu. They'll highlight Hashiri + Dasu and give u the individual meanings. And if you're a newbie Japanese learner, you'll make no sense of it ("run out"??).

Also, they don't highlight words in hiragana form, so you have to look it up on another site yourself too.

And sometimes it bugs out and tries to highlight "Ta" "naka" "shi" (hello Mr. Rice Field Middle).

And the translations they get from tatoeba are often translated way too much that some context is lost.

Robots are bad at words. We'll use this to identify killer robots.

When I'm learning Japanese through my tablet, I tried Morpheem last night and I've learned some kanji like 表す ('reveal', 'represent'), 電話 ('telephone call').

I feel like I'm going to study and test 40 JP lines again during my free time. #Useful

So sad to say that the website jp.morpheem.com is down as of now.
