Mochi, the deadly food

Post by takenoko »

"Between 2006 and 2009, 18 people died from choking on mochi in the Japanese capital, according to city's fire department. In 2011, Japanese media reported eight mochi-related deaths in Tokyo in January. Every year, Japanese authorities warn people to cut mochi into small pieces before eating it."

Wow, suddenly Americans banning Kinder eggs and those annoying jelly in a cups doesn't seem so crazy.

I have a horrible gag reflex (makes dentist visits no bueno) so I have to be careful with mochi. Too big of pieces sets it off and I start choking or even vomit.

They usually issue the same warning for konnyaku jelly but I've never had a problem with that

Do people not chew the mochi before they swallow it?

Mochi doesn't really change texture all that much after chewing, it's very gummy.

I guess you'll have to cut it into little pieces before you shove it in your goose gullet!

LOL, is Brian Ashcraft reading our threads? Oh, on closer inspection it looks like he published this in January. Still funny though.
