Alternate Title - Oh no, forced antagonism and transparent miscommunication

So too much humor is like a priapism. If you get too much of it, it starts to hurt, feels awkward, and you need to see the doctor after 4 hours to have big needles suck the blood out. I haven't translated this episode, but just watching it in preparation has wearied me, because every damn character in this show has to be either a walking stereotype and/or totally silly. Does the commander need to be silly too?

Look, Mouri, baby. I like you a lot, since you come in on a Sentai or Rider episode and you write some pretty funny silly off the wall stuff that breaks up main plots gone stale. But you're a main writer now. You can't make everything comedic all the time and also do dramatic stuff too. You're a great free lancer because those other shows usually have serious stuff pre established for you to work off of. Having an appropriate erection in the right context can be pretty nice, same with humor.

What I'm saying is, deflate a little. It's okay to add some mundane stuff to establish backstories, develop character, have people talk fucking normally in a fucking normal conversation. These are all good things that will make your writing a lot more tolerable to watch, and your moments of humor stand out more. It provides contrast and context. You can't just expect to be erect for 50 episodes straight. That's just not realistic.

Also, I like characters like Stinger, and I thought the acting was good, and the Champ back story was acceptable, but overall everything else felt kinda blah. Also Lucky is still Lucky. I want to like the show, but it feels like I'm removing one lucky star from my rating every week. I'm at 3 now, can you pull yourself out from this downward spiral?

At least next week's episode looks like it might be kinda good?

Penis

Edit: I did like the part where Lucky was beside himself with joy.

I may have enjoyed the Henshin Lesson more than the episode.

Which isn’t to say I hated the episode. I suppose I’m ambivalent. This episode really made me feel bad for Raptor. She’s surrounded by quite the collection of idiots, isn’t she?

I'm not really feeling the Commander, but I couldn’t help but laugh when he came out and called their crusade a suicide mission. Rather than Doggie Kruger 2.0, he seems more like an immature Master Shafu...on drugs.

I’m not sure what to think about Stinger. On one hand, we haven’t had a decently written antagonistic ranger in...a long time. Abaranger, maybe? I agree with Lucky about one thing - Stinger doesn’t seem evil, per se, but his motivations are pretty murky and probably misguided. I flat out groaned when Stinger said his reason for fighting the KyuuRangers was because they were strong. I was surprised when Stinger acknowledged being the one to attack Anton rather than it being a case of mistaken identity, but from his comment about atoning for his sins, he either didn’t intend to kill Anton or regrets it. Still, I’m relieved they didn’t have him join the team this episode, because that wouldn’t have been believable at all.

Aw, I guessed wrong about why there were two Reds from the promo last week. I thought it was going to have something to do with the “Trick” in Gold’s “Trick Star” title. Guess we’ll be getting a new auxiliary KyuuTama every week now.

Jark Matter is mining Planesium from the planets they've conquered, eh? Sounds like the way the Galra mine quintessence in the Voltron reboot.

I try not to comment on previews, but...

Damn, they made it to Earth already? I think I’m disappointed.

I cringe a bit when Hame laughs and says her one of her comrades is weird. It comes across as her being a mean girl.

While the episode has problems, I'm at least relieved to see that there are actual stakes in the show. Failure will have clear consequences.

But how will we get all the unobtainium that we need? Also, the new Voltron is one of the best new American cartoons that I've seen in a long time. So quality.

As Luna pointed out to me, I guess they're just trying to make her come off as this extremely shallow, valley girl stereotype? That might be just as bad though...

Pink - Prissy for comedic effect
Silver - Confusing emotion and acting
Gold - Talks in memes and outdated slang
Orange - Only cares about being strong antihero type
Red - Catchphrase, might be an idiot, promotes anti-meritocracy since his only skill is being lucky
Blue - Is fine
Black - Justice, but has some more nuance with this backstory given
Green - Shallow valley girl
Yellow - Too many cooks

Please, fix this, Mr. Writer.

It occurred to me that this episode was based around 3 (well lucky plays the midground which should be played by balance imho) out of 4 zodiacs in the team and Lucky used gemini another zodiac kyuutama in this episode so basically there was 5 (6 if you count snake holder) zodiacs already. I wonder what happens if team starts using each other kyuutama's.

Can't say I'm much after who wrote what, but if that wouldn't be a Toku Forum, I would think you are talking Moffat here...

Anyways, after two utterly dissapointing Seasons, this one has the shallowest start I can remember, I really tried to get behind the Idea of a bigger Core(and probably final) Team, but as stated before, the Characters up to this Point are either shallow or Stereotype or worse both.

Basicly they were okey in the Intro Episode, cause I liked Blue and Balance there, but by now it's already an RedShow again, they could easily have skipped his Tama for Episode one or even made him last, like he's so confident he's getting one he sticks around and helps recruiting the others, or well at least wait for Episode 2, because Blue was enough for the first one really, and they totally could have had skipped the Mecha in Ep.1 too.

Not to mention his Pokespeaking, the only thing worse is Chameleon's laugh, I mean she's kinda cute and all, but utterly pointless in Mecha Fights apparently, like they got her in Ep.1 so they could have a Full Mecha, and then switched out in both Ep 2 and 3 with another, because she couldn't get the Job done, seriously, just give her Ground Duty or an Infiltration Job, Chameleons are good for stealth sooo... But back to the laughing, it makes here shallow as 'random word here' because she laughs over every unfunny shit and her laugh is so horrible, it makes a Hyena shudder.

And yeah -1 Star for the Commander, another chance wasted on a likable Character, seriously there are non right now. Well maybe Raptor, but just because she's pissed by the sillyness too.

Thinking a bit more about this, specially with the Theme, it's like an attempt to put Fourze in Sentai Clothing, let's just hope it get's it's Act together, Fourze was at least enjoyable.

We should be careful here man since Ninninger's main writer is in the same position Mouri is right now, and quite frankly, we may get a bad series like Ninninger and we already have a Takaharu with Lucky, I like the show so far Lucky aside.

A weaker episode, for sure. Stinger is pretty neat, glad he didn't 180 in a single episode, but let's see how he gets won over.
Champ defeating? Lucky befriending? Hmm.

I like Xiao. He didn't have much in this episode, but it is Levi's seiyuu and that's enough at the moment. His antics with Raptor was a nice part of the episode.

I want to preface everything by saying I liked the episode and gave it 5 stars again. However...

This episode suffered from what I was worried about when the nine Kyurangers were initially shown: the character suits. We have 9 on the team, four of which have no "human" form at all. With last season having four members that alternated between Human and Suit, I wasn't too surprised to see that this season had characters that were always going to be a suit actor in some form of suit, be it the hero suit or the character suit. This saves the producers a lot of money by not having to hire so many in-person actors, not to mention they don't have to do makeup work on the suit actors. Savings all around, which go to other things.

The problem is when these suit characters have a cornerstone role in a story arc, which has happened here. Stinger was rather good, and in my opinion didn't come off very campy with his anger. The actor did a good job in showing that there's something going on without actually saying "HEY. I'VE HAD A SHITTY WEEK Y'ALL", which is hard to find in the more recent Sentai (Example: Yakumo). The other half of this story is where it fell apart, since the emotionally driven character was incapable of showing emotions. Jirou is a great suit actor, but no matter what he does he's not going to be able to put emotion on that bull's face. The voice actor can do anything, Champ can smash his fist into the ground, but we're never going to actually see any real emotion out of the character, and that's something that's absolutely crucial to have a story like this play out well. This was compounded by Lucky giving a damn at all, leading the viewer to ask "Why is he in this fight?" because the viewer has nothing to base any emotional value on.

This is the main thing that scares me about the future of Super Sentai. I get the feeling that Toei has realized the money-saving potential of replacing Humans with suits and writing something shallow enough to come across through an inanimate mask. Sentai went through a period where the characters had depth and were multi-faceted that seemed to peak during the Magiranger-Toqger run (Shinkenger's probably the peak), and it's been going back down to what it was prior to that. Think about Dekaranger, and how Ban just yelled a bunch and Hoji just ran around saying "Perfect". The other four each had basically one trait and the writers went with it, and that's what the last few Sentai series have done. Kyuranger seems to have laid down the guidelines for each character already, with Raptor being the only one that seems to have any kind of depth at all (WTF is Spada doing on that ship, by the way? He's done nothing since the opening scene). I'm enjoying the series for what it is, but this is continuing a trend that's been going for two years now. I may have a laugh a few times a week (I laughed at the OKyuu! thing, I'll admit) but I don't see this being a very satisfying series on down the road.

Holy shit Lucky; shut the fuck up. Seriously, he ruined two good moments in this episode involving Champ by making it about himself. I didn't watch Ninninger, but I saw a lot of complaint about Takaharu, and I'm guessing this is what it was all about. Lucky assuming that Stinger is a good guy because he has a Kyuutama is like if Abared looked at Abarekiller and said "He can't be evil, he's an Abaranger!" I hope Stinger continues to kick Lucky's ass until he finally acknowledges him as an enemy, and then Champ comes in and reconciles with him and convinces Stinger to join them. And then if Lucky tries to say that he was right all along, Stinger breaks his nose and tells him to shut up.

So now we get introduced to Not-Doggy Kreuger, and I don't know if I like him or not. His silliness seems charming, unlike any other character, but it hasn't quite made me smile yet. Also, he drops like a dozen Kyuutama on the table for everyone. This is the most "getting everything handed to them on a silver plate" that any Sentai has had. One reason I enjoyed Go-Busters first arc, despite it being slow, is because of how much work they put into getting their shit together and getting to the point most sentai start at.

I liked that Kyuoryuger eventually got into a guest 7th member routine, and so I thought seeing a 9-member team would be great. Except we haven't really seen much of a "team" so far. The first episode was an incomprehensible mess; but the second episode did do good with the 3-man team up between Lucky, Balance, and Naaga. Here, though, we get five fucking team members taken out of the picture for no reason other than they didn't have any lines for the conflict between Champ and Stinger. Yet fucking Lucky made the cut, and he was super unhelpful about it.

Now, every character has been 1-dimensional so far. They aren't being focused on, so I get why, even though it's dumb. Still, I can tolerate most of them. Especially Yellow with his food comparisons and puns. He may be sticking to one gimmick, but he's not saying the exact same thing everytime. Unlike Hame, who continues to inappropriately laugh at everything. I'm seeing comments above of people saying she's supposed to be shallow, but I don't see that. I don't know what I see, but I don't get the impression that she's supposed to be mean. More like she's supposed to be the cheery type that looks on the bright side of things, maybe? Either way laughing at everything isn't a fucking character trait and this needs to be addressed immediately. This is the first actual female green, and THIS is what we're getting for her? Fuck you, Kyuuranger.

2/5, because the interaction between Champ and Stinger warrants some credit for being the good part of this episode.

So the thing I'm worried most about is happening already. This is like last episode where Lucky + Two other rangers get the focus of the episode and the others get pushed into the background. Why couldn't one of the others pair up with Champ? Lucky just isn't that interesting to carry and episode to be honest.

The commander is strange to say the least. Also the fact that he just kind of appears is a bit of a letdown.

At the time of me writing this, the poll is tied with 2-5 having three votes each... huh.

I get the feeling this show REALLY wants to be something special. Like champ's backstory feels like it is going to be expanded later on, and not just to explain what REALLY happened with Stinger. Hell, i will say that i am impressed that they dedicated so much time to the conflict to the point that the MotW barely appeared and that the conflict is not just not resolved, Champ and Lucky are in opposition on what they should do with Stinger.
But so far the actual story doesn't seem to meet it's ambition.
Also, not impressed by the leader.

Personally, I thought it was fine, a little surprised that Champ is coming out as an early lead in "characters I actually care about."
Lucky's still annoying as hell, but I couldn't stand Ban, Jan, or Right at first either. Hopefully he'll cut back on the catchphraseing and pep talks about believing in stuff.
I'm probably being a little generous, I really want this one to be good.
