Metaroid vs Metaloid?

Post by Lunchboxx » Sun Oct 28, 2012 3:22 am

I've been going to different sentai source sites and most of them refer the Metaroids as Metaloids.

This seems to be a common thing I've seen whenit comes to the japanese pronounciations of L's and R's.

My question is, is there a actual difference between the two when translated?

Same thing whenever people call Mele from GekiRanger Mere, though this one I could never understand the reason of calling her 'Mere'. Her beast image is the ChaMELEon, so why do some people still call her Mere?

This is just one of those things I must know and probably will never know. Either way, Japanese translations can be wierd. :P

This actually came up because there was an episode where they spelled in Metaloid on some screen:

Japan and their r's and l's. It's that same old thing.

R/L is the same sound in Japanese. So most of the time they don't see the difference between Election/Erection and this causes way too much sniggering on my part.

Ah, guess it's just something not to worry about often then. Though it DOES irk me alot whenever people still refer Mele as Mere. It's one of my wierd compulsive things to correct people on her name.

As for the wiki article debate, I did not even notice the screen with the Meteloid in the episode the first time. And the theory behind it was actually a pretty sound answer.

Do we still call them Metaroids or Meteloids though? Given the name and theory behind it, Meteloid would make more sense.

Do you pay attention to the recent episodes because we still call them Metaroids.

I do pay attention, no need to sound rude. :(

I'm talking about in general and mainly for the fanbase at large. I was not saying you guys should change your subs or anything.

Metaroids. In general the simplest answer is the one most likely to be true. Meta + android. The Metaloid one can be explained away easily by saying they chose the L to make it look more like a foreign word (happens all the time with made up words).

And if you read the theory behind Metaloid, it's really kind of a stretch. I guess you're young, but as you get older you'll notice that when something has to jump through a few leaps of logic like that you can easily flag them to be not true. If that theory is true, then we'd also need to use Buddyloids since it's the same suffix that's being used. (-loids for the smaller machines, -zords for the bigger ones)

TLDR edition: Android = humanoid robot. Buddyroids and Metaroids are human-sized robots.

Yeah the way you explained it, Metaroids does makes sense.

Though why would they spell it as Metaloids? Silly Japanese!

Japanese people tend to get Engrish slip into their shows all the time. The fact that we differentiate their broken English with "Engrish" is kinda the example of the R/L issue with Japanese romanization.

Hello all, this my first post on this forum :) don't know if there is a presentation topic.

I asked myself this question a few weeks ago, because Metaroid seemed a little strange to me. For me, Metaloid was better than Metaroid, because I thought it was a portemanteau between Android and Metal, since Enter (and later Escape) used items made with metal (key, antennas, trains...). It seemed more logic because the use of a virus, you need things like microchips that could be represented by metal (some kind of metaphor).

However, there are some exceptions like the rubber (ep26), so my theory is not good.

Meta + Android seems strange too, for me Meta is just a prefix. Metaroid just means "Android of an Android", which is very strange.

Fav Sentai 1st : Gokai, Deka, Bouken, Go-Busters, Kyuu, Shinken, Gosei, Gao.
Fav KR 1st : OOO, W, Kiva, Gaim, Drive, Fourze, Den-O20*, Wizard, Ghost, Ex-Aid
Fav Garo 1st : Yami, Senki, Hana, Garo, Zero

Yeah, that seems fair enough. I think it sounds more credible than the metalloids theory personally. But you like you say, it sort of breaks down when the original object isn't made of metal (like tires or candles).

It's more like they turn inanimate objects into Metaroids, not just machines (made of metal). In that sense, it's more like they're a meta android. Remember that meta doesn't just mean "self referential". It also means "referring to", "having characteristics", "parody". Whether it's an android that takes on the characteristics of the original object or the original object that has been converted into some semblance of an android, who's to say?

At the end of the day, the simplest explanation is best. Meta Virus + Andriod = Metaroid.

But I do like your explanation of why Metaloid might be a valid interpretation; I think it's good enough to note in our wiki. At the end of the day, it's all up to interpretation.
