Last week's rating 4.33 (3 votes) Guess everyone displeased with the series so far stopped watching it.

Only 3 stars this time. The build up for gold's appearance should have made it really good. But it was awfully predictable and by the numbers. Really craved a bit of personality and uniqueness, but even the small moments that we have between pink/blue and green/black were pretty much a repeat from previous episodes.

The spoiled kid's Gundam references crack me up. "Not even my dad hit me!"

Have mixed feelings about the CGI fight. I thought it was really fluid and exciting to watch. But there was something cheap and video gamey looking about it.

I'm kinda torn. On one hand, it's pretty clear we're only going to get caricatures rather than actual characters, but on the other hand, there's really just not enough time to have a functioning plot with good characterization. It's pretty much all show with no sustenance, and while I don't mind that too much here, it feels kinda hypocritical when I've been criticizing Kyuu for the exact same thing. On the other hand, Kyuu has twice as much time per episode and 4 times as many episodes so...

While Brave isn't great, at least it's watchable? I hate how Kyuu is made of garbage and waste just shoddily slapped together. One guy overusing "baby" is much better than 11+ people who are pure catchphrases (since some bad guys also are catchphrases). Just having something not be negative makes it leaps and bounds better than something that is mostly awful with maybe one or two nuggets of goodness.

this is a tough one to sell, on the one hand Gold, I'll just call him Raiden has a nice buildup but on the other hand "Raiden" just gives me the feeling like I'm not getting my money's worth

The megazord fight is also mixed since it's fast and frantic and awesome, it also felt like I'm playing a video game with quick time events and failing to press every button prompt

and the oh I'm not gonna kill them because you need to pay me more money? screw that I'd kill them then ask them to pay extra.

Not a ton to say here since the short episodes means that the series wears its plot and characters on its proverbial sleeve. I like that Pink and Green are still training - they didn't become martial arts experts overnight. I wonder what the heck Gold intends to do with all of that gold though. Hopefully the series has enough foresight to explain why he wants so much money.

Brave comes out at the end of the week, and then you put up the next poll a day or two later. So there's not much time for us to watch these and vote before you do the next one...

Agreed. And I think the reason it feels that way is a combination of the CGI itself and the camerawork. The CGI models aren't bad, but they're not super detailed. And the lighting casts basic shadows, but it looks like they're not calculating ambient occlusion or the like. The big thing that's probably throwing you off is that there's no motion blur to the models' movements; each frame is cleanly rendered. If this were a real fight that obviously wouldn't be the case, so the CGI betrays reality. But at the same time, the fight was moving so fast that if they did add a correct amount of blur, I'm not sure you'd be able to see much.

As for the camerawork, like the fight itself it moved very quickly, and in a non-traditional manner. Sentai mecha fights are usually very well staged, taking things shot by shot. Having the camera spin around and zoom in is much closer to a fighting game than normal cinematography.

I don't think that's hypocritical. Brave isn't trying to be a full Sentai series; by its very nature it's a spin-off side-story of sorts. It's Sentai condensed to its essential elements to fit inside a 10 minute runtime. No one should be expecting a full story, and I don't think it should be judged as if it had one. As a series of Sentai shorts it's doing fine so far (if perhaps proving that shorts don't work very well). KyuuRanger on the other hand is a full Sentai series, and it's perfectly fair to judge it as such.

PS The gun is a $100?! Yeesh. I just got the new Soul of Chogokin Dino Megazord, and that was only $240 for a whole dang die-cast giant robot.

Maybe he'll use it to buy a hat for his little brother's dinosaur. But then he finds out the little brother solid his dinosaur to give his older brother gold.

Well, it's up to 8 people now from 3. For such a short series, not many people are committing to watching it, I think.

Sure, but I kind of wish there was any kind of story besides the rush to the action. Porn without the story might get the job done, but it's not as fun to watch. Wait what?

I'd say that's a fair analogy. There is some story, but so far it's quite thin. Maybe it'll thicken out a bit further down the line?

Though I feel like this series is about half of a Sentai episode in almost every way: there's 1 fight instead of 2, and half as much time is devoted to out-of-suit antics. About the only thing that seems unchanged in length is the mecha fights; those seem about as long as a standard Sentai fight when they don't pad it out with stock footage.

Yeah, I'm honestly not expecting anything great out of this mini-series. On one hand though, given how short each episode is, I might just end up editing them all together by the end of the run and watching them in one shot as a movie.

so turn a sequel spinoff series into a movie, interesting
