I wouldn't really rely on ratings these days as a benchmark for quality, since less and less people are watching TV in favor of the internet.

Overall I think this series was an awesome, fast-paced journey, and best described as fresh.

Gaim will definitely be remembered for a very long time. For me personally, I haven't seen a really, really great KR series since Blade. Everything after that were either good or mediocre, but Gaim brings up the game to the next stage.

It's not about the ratings but how much of the various toys are bought.

I really enjoyed Gaim. I loved the characters (even the minor ones in the different crews), the acting was superb, the writing was fantastic, and the episodes were phenomenal. Every time an episode ended, I was at the edge of my seat wondering 'What will happen next?' Lol I even had many theories running through my head.

I will admit that the first time I heard about Gaim being a fruit-motif, I thought 'Wait.....we went from magic to fruit? This doesn't sound good.' But as I watched, I made a mistake. Thank you Urobuchi for Gaim. Your plot twists almost made me throw my laptop out the window.

The entire show and fruit gimmick remind me of an old Monty Python sketch, about defending against attackers wielding fruit. I'd love to see someone make a mash-up of the two.

This was just the spiritual sucessor of Kamen Rider Blade.

Kaito was probably a worst Garret and Micchi was just as bad as Mutsuki.

Takatora at some point was like Chalice.

About the show in general

Pros
+ The return of the "dark stories" to Kamen Rider. People died a lot in this series and the ending was not a complete happy ending (several characters are dead).
+ Really good actors. Kouta, Kaito, Takatora, Michii these guys all are great actors even when the story was not the best all of them are great in their roles even Ryoma with that stupid personality and stupid way to speak.
+ Good balance between story, action and comedy.

Cons
- The fruit theme... I don't know but this combination of samurai + fruit + dancing was just bad and you can't take the show seriously just for these things.
- Complicated story... too many changes in the course of story and I never understood what was Kaito's goal. He wanted to be strong and have power but also wanted to exterminate the weaks... He wanted to be strong for what? for himself? not to protect the weak?...
- Sad ending... not bad thing but several characters died and the rest just continue with their lives in the best way possible (just like real life.. oh snap!)

Kaito's motivations were complex, but he stated them over and over throughout the entire run. He hates bullies, and he hates the system which enables bullying to be successful; he wants to destroy that system, but the only way to do it is from inside that system, so Kaito's gotta be the strongest of them all. He's fighting fire with fire, essentially.

And if anything, the fruit theme really strengthened the darkness of the stories. It was just so chipper and friendly, and juxtaposing that with people dying and fighting over who gets to obliterate the world... the incongruity was really something special.
