Is Kaito really evil?
Is Kaito really evil?
To be honest, I felt like Kaito was one of the good guys even though he had the intention of destroying the world. Like Kouta said, his ideals weren't wrong he just had a wrong approach. What do you guys think?

Re: Is Kaito really evil?
What Gaim really does right is that there are no good or bad guys, just people with different opinions. Is Kouta really more right than the Overlords or Kaito or Takatora? Definitely not, he just has a stronger sense of idealism and what he wants. He's adult enough to get out and take some action but childish enough to still believe he can change the world. Honestly I could go into great depths as to the philosophy of Gaim, someone could definitely do a philosophy paper on this.

Re: Is Kaito really evil?
I think that Kouta is a primary example of a "good guy" just as Ryouma is a cartoonish villain. But the other characters are more nuanced.
Re: Is Kaito really evil?
I feel like Gaim is a kind of show that makes you think about what's good and evil in this world. And I guess Lunagel was right about saying no one is good or evil in this show.

Well, Take's right, Ryouma is a bit on the evil side but you could argue he's misguided rather than purely evil.

Kaito just has a warped sense of what is right.
Re: Is Kaito really evil?
Another thing I wanted to ask. Was Kaito in love with Mai? I mean they tossed us all these scenes here and then but it was hard to tell since he's the kind of guy to not say anything

Re: Is Kaito really evil?
Good question wisdomcat. I don't think Kaito was really in love with Mai like he wanted to date her or anything. But there definitely was a deep affection there, that he would never openly admit to. He's Team Baron, she's Team Gaim, they're the Capulets and Montagues. But he did save her a couple times in the Forest, so he definitely felt some affection. But nowhere near the level of genuine love that Kouta had for her or the warped love Micchi seemed to have for her.

Yeah, but I think he arguably had more chemistry with Mai than Kouta did.

Re: Is Kaito really evil?
Kaito, was willing to become an evil to destroy a world he saw was awarding those who abused their strength. If he could remain 'good' and change the world, that was fine with him. But he was more than willing to become a demon of destruction if the end results were a world where someone like himself would not arise again. It's not even, a warped sense of Right and Wrong, if you ask me. He had a goal, that he did not regret. A goal that he knew could easily turn him into a monster, that he'd be hated for. And his resolve was such that he never wavered from that goal. Where Kouta, or Takatora, or Micchi would have doubt, Kaito would keep moving down his chosen path, not caring if it was in the right or not. Where the others shaped their paths on their ideals, Kaito's path was set, and his ideal was reaching the end of that path. Neither of those was going to change, no matter how much evil he did, no matter how much good he did, no matter the lives he knew he would have to end. And if I keep typing it will end up more and more just spining around itself saying the same thing over again. So I'll just end here.

Re: Is Kaito really evil?
Nah. Kaito was a strong Chaotic Neutral character to me. He wanted to protect his town, but knew he had to make a deal with the devil in order to achieve his goal. Honestly, it's this strong dichotomy between him and Kouta that helped make this series memorable. Kouta wanted to use his power to save everyone, Kaito was more willing to kill anyone who stood in his way.
