nope, just SD, main give away is the res, 4:3, HD is 16:9,

Senati was in 4:3 and then when it changed to HD its res changed to 16:9

Also this show was filmed before HD took off so it wouldnt be in HD, tis a shame for sure, but its just the luck of the draw

4:3 and 16:9 are aspect ratios. Things like 30i and 720p are indicators of resolution.

Judging from Garo's release dates, I'd say they shot first quarter of 2006 with post over the summer then broadcast in October. Panasonic's HVX-200 came out that December. Garo literally was right on the cusp of the transfer over to affordable HDV camera's. My money's on that they shot on a DVX-100 or similar build of miniDV cam.

What is 30i? A reference to frame rate?

Yeah, typically DV shoots at 29.97 frames-per-second, but usually it's just referred to as being 30. The "i" refers to interlacing, where the bars of the image get meshed with image before or after it. 720 isn't a frame rate, it's actual image resolution, but it usually is followed by the "i" for interlace or the "p" for progressive anyway. Like, DV is usually just spelled out by frame-rate then image scan, HD is usually spelled out resolution, scan, and frame-rate.

Isn't that pretty standard for NTSC filming?

>720 isn't a frame rate

I didn't say 720 was related to frame rate

>HD is usually spelled out resolution, scan, and frame-rate

Right, but the main defining quality for high definition is just the resolution. I just don't know why you bring the other factors up when they can be the same as SD filming

I know you didn't say anything about 720, but I figured if you wondered why I would call 30i a resolution when it refers to a frame rate I thought I would explain it. In the industry, when you say 30i, it's likely assumed you're shooting SD. If you're shooting, say, 720p it's assumed you're shooting HD at 24fps.

A redo with current codecs and less lossy compression would still be a nice improvement. The show is great, the effort already in is wonderful, but it pixilates and artifacts in a way other SD titles don't. I think it's especially a problem during the extensive night scenes as all that dark background tends to become muddy and artifacted.

We're still pretty much using the same technology as we did for encoding. The reason that particular show has such bad quality is because the raws were in wmv and encoded at a low compression rate. That's why it doesn't stand up to other SD encodes

That answers my question in so many ways. I had a hard time believing it could be your encoding causing it to be that bad.

Is it as simple as that? If you were working with new raws, do you still have all the timing queues and fonts and the script to just whack on the top and encode?
Image Demon beasts called Horrors live in the darkness. This is a story of a Makai Knight who cuts down the Horrors. You better not look away.
