Nope, you're talking about the ruined one he showed to Kaoru in the spirit trip episode right? (Where I pointed out if he was Red Mask that was the perfect chance to just stalk and kill a spirit beast.) When he was showing it to Kaoru, he had a momentary flash of another woman. My guess at the time was that it was the brush of a makai priestess important to both him and Red Mask, who I was positing as either a brother or good friend (I was hoping Mystery Priestess would be Leo's sister and Red Mask her lover and his best friend, but twins works) and whose death drove his brother batshit evil; and also whose death was somehow the "fault" of a knight for not saving her.shadowneko003 wrote:So they went with the evil twin/imposter story for Leo. You think that brush Leo was carrying was Red Mask's?
The tropes and formulas write themselves when you put them together.
I can't say I'm super shocked Leo pulled out a real Makai sword. Dude is badass, he probably went off and forged it himself. After all, Red Mask had the ankoku-Garo sword and armor and that needs countering.
Another reason is that we got that weird bit of foreshadowing in the episode that flashbacked to Kouga's childhood at knight summer camp. There was that kid (Purple right? Like Red Mask's hair) who also dabbled with a brush. At the time, a lot of people thought Purple was kid Leo, or at least reminded them of him. Well, that was apparently Checkov's makai calligraphy brush. The entire point of that character, in hindsight, was to show that some people were talented enough to do either sorcery or swords, but of course doing both would be bucking the system so they had to choose one. Officially. (Something Rekka can sympathize with!)
I think that in the end we're going to find out that a big chunk of the trouble going on has to do with the overall organization being so hidebound. If Latus-"dono" is any indication, they're more than do for a housecleaning. Why not let someone do sword and magic? Why not let a woman be a knight? Let everyone fight to their own ability, I say. You've also got people like Rekka's friend who clearly belongs in a workshop cranking out potions and gadgets for other people to use and not being on the front line. (In a slap fight, I would put cash money on Kaoru winning against him.) Then you've got people like Jabi and Rekka. Jabi should have like 1-2 trainee Makai knights carrying her luggage and killing what needs cutting.
What I'm really concerned about is this Gannon thing Red Mask is working on. He's got something bigger than just killing the knights and taking over planned. He told Jabi he has to basically make a new world for the priests to exceed the knights. So that means some kind of big spell, and I would not be surprised if it turned out he's going to sacrifice a bunch of the sympathizer priests too. Maybe feed them to some gouryuu and let them be assimilated or something nasty like that.
Well, we'll see. It's all speculation!
