It's alright. A real solid 4 out of 5. A lot more enjoyable than the series itself, but there's nothing that's transcendent about it.
Looks like Komura Junko didn't write this one? Weird.
The returns does a good job at wrapping up the loose ends in the series, while also basically ignoring the few interesting points that did occur during the TV run. Because of this, it feels like they were saving up story points that they should have addressed during the main plot.
Wrap up:
*Sela and Leo's big rematch. Leo learns to respect Sela and subsequently beats her up with his overwhelming strength. Maybe would have been less disappointing if it happened during the main plot? I guess Leo falling too is proof that Sela has in fact become as strong as he is, but it feels a little less satisfying this way.
*Condor boy is back. So instead of getting the movie tie-in during the show, we get it here. JyuohCondor is just Yamato and Bado combined and only lasts 2 minutes? *Neutral reaction*
*Some closure for the three animals that Misao sucked up. But only really for the rhino.
Wait, just three things? That's the thing with this series. For a show that mostly ignores character development and their relationships, this is sort of all there is? So I get why you'd save this stuff for the clean up episode, but it also highlights the complete lack of substance of the main show.
Here's an idea. The big plot consequence of the show is that the worlds are combined. How about spending the majority of the episode focusing on the troubled race relations between Humans and Jyumans? Instead, we get like 2 minutes of seeing everyone getting along. The transition was no problem, apparently. Personally, I think that would have made for a more interesting story. At least Tusk has glasses now, nice!
Stuff that shows the writer probably didn't watch the show:
*Misao has a girlfriend? You see, in my head canon, Misao was clearly gay. His feelings of not fitting in. His indecision between Tusk and Yamato (Tusk x Misao superior). So him getting a girlfriend here is troubling, even if it is an Jyuman. Clearly all you need to do to get him interested in women is to shove boobs in his face a couple of times!
*Naria is still going on about Genis? That's so troubling considering her end in the show...
*Amu doesn't do anything clever. Frankly, she's just underused in this.
Removing Yamato from the tournament early on was a smart move. Red getting everything is getting tiresome.
Why'd Bado turn into two jewels? I know it's so we think Yamato got hit too, but it makes no sense? They break the orange one and he is released, so it's not like both of them are Bado. Or are they?
A point for remembering about Jagd.
But regardless of the nitpicks, it's good to watch a Sentai where I don't spend any time feeling bored or annoyed.
Thanks to AkibaRangers, I can recognize Niibori Kazuo now. Is this a pose a reference to any of his previous Sentai roles?
