Did Ex-Aid's previews harm the series more than help it?

Post by FangTrigger »

I had to make this thread, particularly after episode 39.

While I think Ex-Aid had some of the best drama I've seen in a tokusatsu in a few years, I can't help but notice that Toei kept giving away way too much information with each preview towards the end of the series, ESPECIALLY WHEN WE LEARN THAT

You always have the option of not to watch the preview if you feel that way. At least there's that quick bumper before the actual preview starts.

Aye. It definitely hurts it, but it's nothing new for Toei. They've been very consistent about this for many years now. :|

The entire point of a preview is to get you hyped for the next episode without giving away any major details. Take Kamen Rider W for example. While I can't remember the specific episode, right before Cyclone/Joker Xtreme debuted, we only got a glimpse of it's silhouette before we reached the cliff hanger ending with Philip. When the next episode came out, those that didn't spoil themselves with any of the magazine advertisements got a great kick out of watching Xtreme in action.

With Ex-Aid (at least with the more recent episodes) I feel like they're just giving away the climax just because.

Japanese previews are usually pretty bad. Sometimes if the preview isn't, the title is super obvious that it gives the plot twist away.

GARO is the only real exception I can think of for Toku that comes to mind instantly.

Yeah, Garo does it well since they keep it very minimalistic, and often the narration that goes over the preview is vague enough that it doesn't give anything away. Plus, Garo isn't really a "Buy the new Garo form toy for this month" driven. Garo's more story driven.

Toei stuff is more "gotta sell toys" driven. So look at this new shiny thing. This comic exemplifies it pretty well:

probably Garo Retsuden is the the most intriguing preview. as we only know the 1 word title for next episode, but we also never know which chara will get the focus in next episode.

back to ex-aid, yes most of the preview kill the mood i think.
even in Gaim when Kouta supposed to die bcoz of michy, the preview ruin it as well.

idk, does TOEI really do it bcoz they just help the audience too much????

That's the reason why I don't watch the previews, and skip the intro whenever they have show clips of any upcoming movie.
A cyborg pokémon who may or may not be a Kamen Rider.
