Are the KyuuRangers named after the constellations?

Post by Gallus Faberge »

So i read your wiki on the episode and saw this
[
]The KyuuRangers names are displayed in English in this episode. They spell Hame's KyuuRanger name as ChameleonGreen, which is incorrect since the names are based on the constellations. The constellation Chamaeleon is spelled with an extra "a", so it should be ChamaeleonGreen.[
]

It is correct that the Constellation is named that. Though the rangers are named after the Japanese names of the constellations, Tenbinza, Shishiza etc.
But in the case of Chameleon there is not a Japanese word for the Chameleon, hence they have it as カメレオン, (Kamereon) in katakana. Which is why they have used Chameleon for Chameleon Green.

But yeah, Chamaeleon works fine to due to the theme.

Sidenote: Chamaeleon would be like チャマエレオン in katakana

Only if you want to pronounce it cha-ma-eh-le-on. Rendering the English pronunciation into katakana would be カミーリオン

Chamaeleon is pronounced the same way as Chameleon in english? I did not know that. I always thought it was like Cha-may-leon.

You missed my point, or i wasn't clear. The Japanese name for the constellations are named after the animals, instead of the latin names for the animals and constellations.
Do you see my point? :)

Oh, I see what you mean. I feel like the rangers are named after the constellations though, still. There's no za, but it's obvious what they mean and are referring to. Like ShishiRed if you translated it literally is LionRed, but thematically it makes more sense for him to be LeoRed. They probably left the za out of the name because it'd be cumbersome to say and would stretch out the rollcall. Context can add a lot to translation, which is why it's more than just looking up the dictionary definition.

Edit: I just realized this might not make sense to people without some context. The ranger names, I would argue, are all based on their respective constellation. Like ShishiRed. Shishi means "lion" in Japanese. The word for "Leo" though is "Shishi-za", since Leo is obviously a lion. The formatting for the Japanese words for constellations add that "-za" at the end.

Another example is OokamiBlue. Ookami means "wolf" in Japanese, but add "za" and you get Ookamiza/Lupus. So all the ranger names follow that pattern.

Since I'm arguing that they're constellation names, that's why I spell it ChamaeleonGreen, after the constellation. Other people say that since the -za isn't present, it should be based on the animal, thus ChameleonGreen.

If I can make one last point, the KyuuTama are named similarly. Like ShishiRed's item is the Shishi KyuuTama. If you look at the item description for Shishi KyuuTama, it says that it has the power of Leo. If it said something like "This is powered by lions" or "This gives you the power of lions" maybe I'd be more into it being the Lion KyuuTama, but to me, based on the fact that it's the space themed Sentai, I think Leo KyuuTama makes the most sense here.

Hm.. hm...

Well i can't make any more arguments.

I've been in the Saint Seiya fandom for a long time, and the main author has his own naming thing going on with the constellation armors, so i am always critical at these things. ha ha. For instance, the Cetus armor uses the english "Whale" instead of Kujira or Cetus.

It's all in "the author's original intent". Which is always hard to deduce in these cases.

Man, do I love Saint Seiya. I was marathoning that a few years ago.

Translations can be quirky. I definitely don't want to say my translations are the right ones, it's just this is my best interpretation based on the data I have. Maybe further down the line some information will appear and I'll change my analysis accordingly.

For now, I'll just say that OphiucusSilver sounds better to me than Snake Charmer Silver. That's too much of a mouthful!
