For a first episode so did I like it, and hopefully we can get more focus on the Patrangers next episode. But it's good that they focused on one team so the structure of the episode could move smoother.

I like how you can see most of the motw in the first episode, like in Metalder (part of the Metal Heroes series that Toei used to make), and I like how their motivation is not to destroy something or gather energy, but to simply become the new boss of the organization.

I am cautiously optimistic. It seems pretty good, the rangers seem to have potential as interesting characters, the butler dude is mysterious and leaves some interesting openings for further plot complications, so that's all pluses. I venture to predict that the 'Master' left back on Lupin Island, or wherever, will turn out to be an extra Lupinranger at some point, but I could be wrong. On the minus side, the ditzy yellow, the stupid robot, and the really dull villains make me a bit leery. With some shows (Shinkenger and Gokaiger spring to mind) the first episode was so perfect and epic that I felt totally safe in the writer's hands. I didn't get that feeling with this one, but I have my fingers crossed anyway. So, here's hoping.

Just wait until episode 20+, because Zyuohger had a good start and became boring from episode 20+ until the end. The problem of these "new" writers of Sentai is they try to make series excited at the beginning and more and more boring in the end (Ninninger, Zyuohger, Kyuranger).
I've noticed exactly what you guys are talking about in both Super Sentai and Kamen Rider lately... The first 20 episodes or so are hardcore dedicated towards the established themes and character personalities. After that, I'm not sure if it's budget reasons or writers' fatigue or the theme just not being sustainable, but the themes get cast to the side, characters become even more exaggerated tropes, and opportunities are missed.

For this series, I feel like there's a lot of potential to create stories and arcs that can stay fresh and still stay true to the theme. I'd love to see nice, trope-y team ups happen. The Lupin's have to go straight and law-abiding for an episode or arc. The Pat's have to loosen up and work as Phantom Thieves for an episode. For a twist, Patran Ichigou could be descended from the original master thief giving him a nice moral crisis. I *really* don't want it to devolve into "heist/arrest/monster of the week" where the henshin happens because "duh, super sentai."

Also, I forgot to comment before on it, but...

The heck is going on with Super Sentai femme fatale monster designs lately? I'm hoping it's not becoming a trend. First there was whatever the busty gun-chuck toting Naria was. Then we got busty split personality octopus Madakko. Now we have a busty slug(?) Goche Ru Medou. It just feels so uninspired compared to likes of Escape or Madame Noir.

All female tokusatsu monsters have to have boobs or else how will we know that they're female?!

Honestly pretty much all the female villains ever have been "on display", it's not really a new thing. That's why the vast majority have been played by porn stars. Madame Noir is an exception but she was also supposed to be slightly older.

Eh, I wouldn't say the vast majority as much as about 3 have been.
I'd personally think it is a fallout of suit designers getting lazy. If you look back at say, Ahames and Shiima, Ley Nefel and the Mess designs, Doctor Mazenda or Abaranger's Jannu, outfit designs like theirs never seemed like they fell into the same trap (or if they did, it wasn't quite as obvious).

And then you also have Bandora's outfit with her cone boobs, haha.

Well there are other ways. But I don't think Toei wants mainline Super Sentai pushed back to after midnight for decency reasons.

It does seem like that trope died with film stock, though. I don't believe Toei has cast a porn star since Go-Onger?

In fact, now that I think about it some more, since Go-Onger the only face villainess we've had in the entire last decade has been Escape.:(

Go-Onger was probably the las traditional face villainess we've had. I don't really count Escape because Enter was human like for most of Go-Busters as well so she fits the theme.

I guess the exaggerated proportions are to let children know that yes, that character is intended to be female and not some ambiguous Romi Parked voiced male child? This being a childrens show, I do doubt there is any ulterior motive involved.

njb wrote: Thu Feb 15, 2018 3:35 amOn the subbing, a small complaint from me is subbing the Patranger's names as PatRan (#)gou. For the sake of consistency isn't PatRen or Patren (#)gou better? For example, the first mecha last season was written as KyuuRenOh not KyuuRanOh.
Oh, I'm just used to seeing the mecha names spelled with kanji, I didn't even think of KyuuRenOh as being based on KyuuRanger + Oh. I feel like it's more confusing to have it be PatRen since in this case, the name is more obviously an abbreviation of PatRanger? I also think combining number and letters is kind of ugly, so PatRan 1 or PatRan Ichigou looks better to me.
Just to clarify, when I said (#)gou, I meant Ichigou/Nigou/Sangou. I'm OK with using the Japanese number names there.

Mecha names are spelled with kanji? I never knew that.

Not always, I'm probably thinking of a few examples like DaiRenOh. There's others for sure that use kanji, most probably just use katakana.

Well, there was J in 555 although he was probably max 5 episodes? There have been black actors in toku before although as you said, I do think this is the first time we've had one in a major role. Actually as a foreigner this is probably a first as the only other major foreign characters I can think of is Sazer X's Gordo (who didn't have a lot of lines, although a lot of screen time) and KyouryuuCyan (slightly more major but not a lot of screen time).

Kuuga had Jean Michel Sorrel. I don't recall how much screentime he had, but he had an arc in which he tried to help one of the scientists studying the Grongi because as the series progressed she would not stop working and would barely spend any time with her son because she believed finding the way to stop the grongi was more important (not an unreasonable position considering the sheer number of people the Grongi killed).
I also believe Daimonji's actor in Fourze is half-caucasian.
