Are the LupinRangers thieves?
I mean, they call themselves phantom thieves and that's pretty much what Kaitou means, but are they really thieves? Who are they stealing from?
Are they really that different from the Boukengers? They're keeping dangerous Precious out of the hands of those who would abuse it. And so far, all we've seen them do is take it from literal monsters from another dimension. It's not like they're stealing Precious from humans even.
Like why are the PatRangers so obsessed with arresting them? It doesn't even seem like they care outside of Pat Red.

Well, they're still stealing from the Ganglars so yes? Haven't quite gotten the hang of the phantom part though.
As Keiichirou said in the first episode, stealing is still stealing, even if it's from Ganglars. Kinda feel like his priorities are a bit screwed up though considering the Ganglars aren't even from Earth, plus they're trying to take over the world. Lawful Good?

Did you hit enter before finishing?
Anyway, does it even make sense to call that stealing? Like the media basically phrases it "LupinRangers defeat monsters terrifying people", so even they know what's up.
They're more gentlemen and lady thieves than phantom thieves. The gentleman thief trope has cooped the original meaning of Kaitou, so it's probably not fair to literally translate it to phantom thief.

But I guess theft is still illegal, regardless of who you rob? In the first episode they shoot up the casino still full of normal people, which is against the law.
That's the whole point of phantom thieves. They usually steal from evil people anyway, but the fact it's still theft means it's illegal.

But they also straight up kill those monsters too. The police care that they get robbed, but don't care that lives are getting taken?Catastrophe wrote: ↑Wed Feb 21, 2018 10:52 am But I guess theft is still illegal, regardless of who you rob? Re: Are the LupinRangers thieves?
I guess the point could be made that the PatRangers have legal authority to use lethal force against the Ganglars, but the Lupins don't. It's the vigilante aspect pushed in some superhero works like Spiderman.
The real answer is that it's a childrens T.V. show and I'm guessing the writers didn't bother to think about it that much.

If your intention was going to steal something from someone, then you're a thief regardless if you're successful, failed, or even return it afterwards. Also they are illegally breaking in into places which is a crime regardless.

Let's take on face value everything Kogure says. If so, the Burgerganglers are the thieves, and the LupinRangers are just retrieving stolen goods and returning them to the original owner.

At that point it just becomes a Robin Hood thing. It's probably for the best, and they've got good intentions but they're still outside the law.
Lawful good vs chaotic good?

Re: Are the LupinRangers thieves?
Now that episode 2 is released, RIP the thousands of people the PatRangers probably killed chasing the LupinRangers through the city. But at least they're doing it in the name of preventing heroes from robbing monsters.
Re: Are the LupinRangers thieves?
Check in Kanji, the "kaitou" in the title of Lupinranger is 快盗, with 快 is pleasure; delight; enjoyment. So I think the "kaitou" in this case is the combined word, with kai (enjoyment) và tou (thief). In Rangerwikia, they trans this kaitou is gentleman.
However, the phantom thief in kanji is 怪盗 - it is the meaning as Takenoko want to mention.

They changed the kanji? WTF is the point of that? No wonder Japanese kids have trouble learning their kanji in the modern age.

Re: Are the LupinRangers thieves?
Toei Exec 1: Hey this is the kanji for kaitou right?
Toei Exec 2: iunno, looks okay
Three months later, after all the promotional material has been rolled out:
Toei Exec 1: Oh fuck.

Re: Are the LupinRangers thieves?
Uh, so is the kanji wrong or is the translation wrong? Just what is the name of this series supposed to be for us dumb westerners?
