How do other people make 720p movie BDrips with a size of 700mb-800mb but still have the excellent quality? (because i can see TV-Nihon 720p movie BDrips are around at 1.2-1.9GB) And why do they use MKV as container than mp4?
I'm a complete video newbie. Hehe

First, check to make sure your file is complete by running it through RapidCRC or checking it with a torrent. If it's incomplete, the torrent will fill in the broken parts.
Don't use Quicktime, Realmedia, or WMP to play our files. Basically, they suck, and you're going to have a bad time.
Use VLC, Gom Player, or Media Player Classic with some codec packs installed.

Re: Video filesize question
I can try to go a little smaller for 720p next time. I don't have as good an idea of what's a good HD size compared to SD. The thinking is usually "if the SD for a 24 min video is 233 and the HD is 350, then the movie should be around this much bigger"
MKV is just a container, it really has nothing to do with the quality of the video. We really don't use any of the features that MKV provides and MP4 is more compatible with video game consoles, so that's why we use MP4.

Re: Video filesize question
You can set the size to whatever you want, it's just a matter of there being less bitrate for the video. It's all about what you can reasonable get away with as the minimum

Re: Video filesize question
ideally the filesize should be closer to 3 to 4 gig in size , but since that is quite large we settle for the 1.2 to 2 gig range, the problem I have with making it so small is you reduce the quality so much by using such lower bit rates, a standard Blu-Ray is between 18 and 40 gig, so you can see how much of a quality drop we take when we do an encode for release,
Is there a specific reason you want such small file sizes?

Re: Video filesize question
My ISP limits P2P traffics to 40% of the speed of my 1mbps internet connection (i cant download from DDLs because it's slower than torrent) and when my daily bandwidth reaches to 1gb, my ISP (Globe Telecoms) slows my download speed to 20-30KB/s (which is hard to bypass, based on my experience.) thats why i try hard to avoid consuming all my bandwidth. >.<
