Playback support

Ask all tech support and help questions for playing our videos here. THERE IS NO GUARANTEE YOUR QUESTION WILL BE SOLVED!

First, check to make sure your file is complete by running it through RapidCRC or checking it with a torrent. If it's incomplete, the torrent will fill in the broken parts.

Don't use Quicktime, Realmedia, or WMP to play our files. Basically, they suck, and you're going to have a bad time.

Use VLC, Gom Player, or Media Player Classic with some codec packs installed.

Playback support

Post by takenoko »

The first step should always to be to make sure your file is not corrupt. All our files come with a series of numbers and letters at the end, this is the CRC. Use a program like RapidCRC or something else to check to see if the CRC numbers match, if they don't, you have a corrupt file.

OR you can open the file in a Bittorrent client. If you start downloading, that means your file was either incomplete or corrupt. Just let the download finish and it will fix your file for you.

All releases after June 2004 use the Xvid codec. You can use Divx to decode your video, but it's not really meant to do that, since they're different codecs.

In general, getting the Xvid codec and installing it should make things work:
http://www.xvid.org/Downloads.15.0.html

FFDshow supports multiple video formats, it's like an all in one if you don't want to deal with the individual codecs. (Note: I haven't tried the new version that I'm linking here)
http://sourceforge.net/projects/ffdshow-tryout/

If you're getting some weird errors or video glitches, it might be Divx attempting to playing your video file. Just go to Divx' configuration and uncheck "play generic mpeg 4 video"

If the resolution or scale of the video seems wrong, look for the thread in this forum that talks about fixing it.

If you're still having problems, please make a report with the following information:

1) CRC and file size
You can check the CRC using Rapid CRC http://rapidcrc.sourceforge.net/
2) What player are you using?
3) Do you have Xvid installed?
4) How did you download the file?

If you don't want to mess around with codecs, you might want to try GOM Player or VLC

As this is now a bit out of date and with take's permission, I thought I'd write something a bit more up-to-date with-the-times check-it-out-yo etc.

Nowadays, for most Windows users, the most simple and effective solution for dealing with most codecs is the Combined Community Codec Pack, or CCCP. This codec pack has been pretty much especially designed by fansubbers to work with fansubs and facilitate them working correctly, so pretty much any release made in recent years should play perfectly fine with CCCP installed. It will, as part of it's installation process, pretty much over-ride any existing codec packs and things you have - so if things are working fine for you, it's probably not worth your time installing it. If you do have playback issues however - especially if you have issues playing back HD - it's well worth checking out, just because some amazing advancements have been made over the last year or so that make it possible to play back HD on much weaker computers than was previously possible.

The CCCP codec pack contains the Media Player Classic Home-Cinema player (under Program Files ---> CCCP) which should do lovelyly for all your playback needs. It does have a few odd settings that you might want to tweak for usability (it's default fullscreen setting is goddamn atrocious) but it's the most reliable means of playback for most encodes. CCCP installs it's codecs in such a way, however, that almost all players that use Windows' signature video playback system will be able to use them. As this is the bulk of the workload when playing video, the choice of player is fairly irrelevant as long as it's up-to-date and protocol-compliant.

The VideoLan (or VLC) media player that is often recommended is a pretty tolerable way of playing things too if you're having problems. VLC is a program that does not play ball with either using your system's codecs or with actually keeping itself up to date with and respecting the protocols laid out by the encoding community and the people designing the codecs in use today. (this mostly applies to the HD releases as the codec used for the SD is no longer in active development) What this means is that VLC can easily be incompatible with a perfectly valid and compliant release, however it also means it's very difficult for you as the end-user to break it: If it can play something, it pretty much will. If you're the type of person who tends to have the "This played fine yesterday..." type of computer problem then VLC might be up your alley. XD

On Unix-based operating systems such as Mac OS and Linux, you have the grand choice, pretty much, of mplayer or mplayer. VLC is also available if you like that option. Be aware that softsubs on Mac/Linux are very hit-and-miss and whilst this group does not softsub, changing your codec setup can easily mess about with things due to the use of Libass as opposed to VSfilter for Unix players.

tl;dr:
Windows: Try this, and if that doesn't work try this
Unix: Sup.
