Virus alert from a thread

Post by Darkwings »

I was reading the article about the role of parents in modern society in the fron page, clicked on the thread link and Avast! prompted a virus alert.

For some reasons I can't bring back the actual text so I'll just assume it has something to do with a style sheet or some sort of script.

The last element blocked was this:

(I edited the link out, use this at your own risk)

Spoiler

I hope this is useful, last time something like this happened it wasn't funny at all :|

I didn't get any warning when I went to the thread or even when open his avatar. I don't know what to tell you.

I too use avast! and I did not get any warnings either. False positive perhaps?

I don't get anything either. It's hard for me to believe that a gif would trigger something like that anyway. If you did get something, it might be a sign there's something wrong with your own machine

The alert was Malicious URL, so basically it could mean nothing since it's not due to the specific file but to the domain it's hosted by.
I managed to get it 3-4 more times to check.

I'm not getting the alert anymore, and nothing changed. Dunno.

I was downloading KR Wizard 07 when that happend, I use Free Download Manager and Avast stopped the connection to that url that was engaging flvsniff.dll. Basically it checks for every piece of script and url in the pages to try and grab videos (I use it mainly for YT).

The problem could be that Avast has that site in its maliucious urls list, and that was what probably was causing the problem.
Still, the fact that now it doesn't pop up the alert anymore is weird.

EDIT: Eh, I checked around and that domain was indeed infected last month, and someone's getting the same problem with closed off connections to due malware. So probably they got some more malware onboard.

PS: I came out clean (as expected since it was a blocked attempt and not an actual infection on my part).
Hotlinked pics from there can't cause any harm, but browsing that site may do that.

Uh, I was editing while you posted. Well, I don't know what to say, but during september there was an exploit on that domain for sure.
Avast just tracks down the domain, not the files etc so anything coming from there will be shutted off until the flag goes down.

Again, if you use both Avast and it's browser plugin for site ratings I don't know how you never got a single alert.

Sorry for the (almost) unnecessary thread :P
