Which kaijin are male and which are female?

Probably male

Definitely female

Is Bomper male?

Is Navi male?

Is Luckyuro male?

Is Izayoi Kyuuemon male? (Shinobi no 3 discussion thread)

So something interesting came up in the episode 3 thread. Apparently, the official Portugese dub or sub actually makes the distinction of whether these characters are male or female. So Luckyuro and Bomper are definitely males. While Navi is an "it". This post

Plus Luna has consulted with actual Japanese people, who seem to agree that Izayoi is also male. After initially thinking that he was male, I have to agree with people that there's too much evidence in support of him being male. He doesn't look female (see comparison pics of obviously female kaijin to ones who aren't), he's a page, and there's a definitely Ranmaru vibe that several people have picked up on.

Not arguing your point(s), I just still disagree a lil with that post that implied that a character having a deep voice just meant a guy.

Japanese media has girls with deep voices (Romi Park's Nana Ozaki & Dayuu, Jojo's Hermes (in the All Star battle game), Zetsubou's Chiri Kitsu).
And just as many guys with high squeeky voices (Son Goku, Patamon, Luckyuro.. apparently).

Yeah, it's just one piece of evidence among many. I wouldn't argue that deep or husky voiced females are always playing boys. Just it's more likely than if they were high pitched, etc. In the case of Izayoi, someone said the voice actress used the same voice to play another boy, so it felt like it was a good case for it being more toward boy than girl.

Not making a commitment is sometimes worse than making a commitment to the wrong one! But I don't feel like it's so ambiguous now, so that's okay.

On an off topic note, it's kind of interesting to see that Toqger is the most progressive in representing women of different age and body types. If you guys were here last year, I was totally predicting that she's turn good and totally become like a svelte sexy kaijin or have a human actress portray her. But nope, they committed to Glitter's look all year long, which is commendable.

I think the main problem people had with Luckyuro was that the original design was very obviously female. Granted, if you're not an artist in any way whatsoever then this could very well go right over your head, but I still think this was the main issue.
Reading Shojo would also be a clear red flag for the intended audience of Sentai (young boys) that it was a girl but whatever. Portugese dub is good enough for me.

Long sleeves = female is news to me

I think you can agree though that the original design is quite different from the version that made it on screen. It's much more boyish now. He's still very gender neutral though.

It's a Japanese thing. Fastest example would be that girl from Lucky Channel.

Not really. Like all Sentai monster designs it's 100% accurate to the concept art except for body proportion. I'm sure that's what you actually meant though.

Speaking as someone who lives in Japan, dudes wear long sleeves too.

People really dress like this in real life? Wow that must be inconvenient and annoying. Always having to roll up your sleeves when you wanna eat or touch something dirty.

Oh, *that's* what that meant. That picture should be more specific, I thought they just meant regular long sleeves.

As a trope, yeah, that's more for girls. I do see some guys with oversized sweaters though, especially in the winter.

Well uh, to be fair I did specificity mention that girl from Lucky Channel. But would would be a good short one sentence way of saying "Long sleeves like the ones the girls in anime wear to appear cutel"? Is there a specific term for this? As you said, while it is a trope, just saying "long sleeves" doesn't cut it.
I am a little disappointed that this isn't actually a fad amongst men in Japan now though.
