Happy 40th anniversary, Sentai

Post by Connie_Edogawa »

the day's almost over, but it's still April 5th, 2015 as I write this, and that's the 40th anniversary of the whole franchise, so, even if the thread is starting almost late, let's kick off a thread to appreciate 40 years of people in colorful costumes fighting monsters.

who's up for friendly discussions of favorite and least favorite series/characters/villains/robots/etc. and why they are or aren't well liked?

I feel as if I'm the only person ever to like Liveman. God the theme is catchy. Why does nobody else like it?

As for least favourite, I honestly really didn't enjoy Gokaiger.

Shurikenger is best ranger. Killer-Oh is best robot. Emperor Tranza is best villain.

Favorite series: MagiRanger. The family plot was good, and I love the siblings and their interactions with each other. And Wolzard was a badass villain.

Favorite robo: Super DekaRanger Robo. It's DekaRanger Robo riding a giant bike, which combines into him. Close second is MagiKing since the MagiRangers becoming their mecha is cool, mythical animals are cool, and they can transform into a dragon or a robot.

Favorite character: Probably Red Buster. Instead of being a hotheaded red, he's humorless and devoted to his mission to a fault. Plus the fucked up stuff with his family and childhood soldier stuff being interesting, not to go into all the stuff that happens to him as the plot progresses. I know a lot of people didn't like him, but I thought he was an interesting guy.

Close seconds, Hikari from Toqger and Souji from Kyouryuuger. When did eccentric green become introverted green?

I just realized I forgot to contribute.

I've seen most of Power Rangers (kinda checked out during Samurai/Super Samurai/Megaforce/Super Megaforce because of reasons), but for Sentai I've really only seen from Dekaranger to the current season, so bear in mind my opinion is bound to a limited scope.

Favorite season: Go-Busters, because while I have many seasons that tie for "favorite sentai season," Go-Busters has the distinction of being one of my "favorite series" and it just happens to be sentai. same with Gaim re:Kamen Rider. I loved the story of Go-Busters, Jin and J were amazing, and I loved that we had a genuinely competent villain who actually scored wins. we've had some smart villains, no question, but rarely do they get what they're after, and even more rare is their getting consecutive successes. otherwise it's a tie between Geki and Shinken.

Least favorite: not sure, because the furthest a series ever went into "bad" territory for me is just not being that interesting, but still likeable. given that, probably Goseiger. it was ok, but it doesn't really stick out as much in my mind when I start going over what I like about various series.

fave villain: Enter. see fave season for why.

least fave: either the Gokaiger villains or the Kyouryuuger villains because they just kinda bored me.

fave robo: Engine-Oh G12. I just love multi-combiners, and that goes all out with it.

least fave: Datas Hyper. the Goseiger mechs were meh overall, and Datas was probably my least favorite among them.

fave ranger: this is actually a tough decision, but probably Gokai Silver, simply because I know I'd act practically the same way if I got to be in a sentai.

least fave: pick a goseiger. any goseiger. Gosei Knight was my favorite member of that sentai. everyone else was meh.

Favorite Series: Dekaranger, Shinkenger, Kyoryuger, Gokaiger (...what? Please, don't make me choose D8 )

Least Liked: Go-Busters (I really, just cannot click with this series I'm sorry. There's nothing wrong with liking it yourself, I just don't.)

Favorite Villain or Group: Leaving out any female villain played by a former porn star (I'm sorry, I'm just easy), I would have to go with Jozu Fuwa. Had a soft spot for him once I saw who the actor was, and I always remember that one time he stopped for some Sushi XP

Least Fave Villain or Group: N Ma... So, dull for a final boss after a really solid series of enemies that all had such interesting attitudes and personalities... then to end it with just squid face Mc-hungry a lot... Bleh.

Favorite Combined Robo: Either Super Deka Robo, or Magiking, huge points to that hat.

Least Favorite Combined Robo: Which ever towering heap of mechs and machines and partners was the ultimate form in Go-Onger, think it was like G-12? Christ that was such a mess it couldn't even more it's arms x__x

Favorite Single Ranger: Toss up between Doggie Krugger/Dekamaster, and Captain Marvelous/Gokai Red

Least Favorite Single Ranger: ... I think if I could think of them, they can't possibly be my least favorite. It's, it a literal race to the bottom... ... and if I move everything to the side it might be Shinken Brown :V

wow! what a nice forum discussion!

favorites
SENTAI:
1. Boukenger (Since its my first Sentai to really watch and focused on a weekly basis)
2. Jetman (Loving the mature theme of a love triangle)
3. Gokaiger! X X V
4. ToQger (The series almost made me cry every episode. :( )

Characters:
1. Dekagreen/ToQ Yongou (I like their wittiness and intelligence)
2. BoukenRed/Red Hawk (This is what you call a well-rounded leader)
3. GokaiYellow and GokaiPink/ToQ Sangou ToQ Gogou (Great Partnership!)
4. STRONGEST is DekaMASTER!!!!

Villains:
1. Enter
2. Brajira
Both have a twisted mind and came from my least favorite sentais. Its like I feel rooting for the enemies.

Robots:
1. ENGINE-O G12 ( Go-Onger) - who wants to mess with a 12 Engine Combination!?
2. GaoKing + GaoRanger Combination - I'm just amazed with the different combinations of animals
3. Shurikenjin - i love how cute are the controlling units of the Robo (Shinobimaru etc)

"DREAM TEAM"
1. BoukenRed
2. Bluebuster
3. DekaGreen
4. GekiYellow
5. ShinkenPink
6. Shurikenger
7. KyoryuuSilver

I don't like
1. I haven't watched half of the sentai series but i really hate Goseiger. :( The series isn't well established and the villains keep on changing. Its like a sentai series with so many seasons but doesn't have enough ratings.
2. Go-busters (One of the sentais ive watched that i wish ended sooner)
3. Kakuranger (Though I like Ninjas, the stories are so broken. But i like how they gave each member a story which strengthen them in the ending)

Favorite Series: I don't know of many that share this feeling with me, but I love Go-Onger. I guess I've heard a lot of people complain on other forums that Go-Onger is too silly and not serious enough, but to me, that's a big part of its charm. The comedy that comes from the puns and character interactions just really keep me smiling through each episode. Also, the fact that the Go-Ongers aren't the strongest team out there, but that they never give up (I know, no Sentai team ever gives up, but seriously, the Go-Ongers are weak compared to most of the other teams) is just awesome. Like when they had to fight Yogostein without transforming and used weapons like a pan to smack him on the head. Oh, and like when they mentioned the upcoming team-up with the Gekirangers and were sad/envious because the Gekirangers were so much cooler than they were. LOL. Great stuff. Plus, the villains weren't really so bad. They even sort of cared about the Go-Ongers, and definitely each other. Endearing, I think, is the best word to describe Go-onger.

Favorite Ranger: This one is difficult for me. Unofficially, I'm gonna go with Nobuo from Akibaranger. A hero that isn't really a hero. The embodiment of most of us, right, what we'd like to be if these fantasy hero/villain worlds were real?

Favorite Robo: I really like the design of Gosei Great. It just looks cool, but it's hard for me to describe why I think as much. I also like the lead up when the headers and mecha charge and combine.

Favorite Villain: This one is difficult for me as well, but I really like Radiguet from Jetman. As much as I loved the Ministers of Pollution in Go-Onger for being loveable badguys that weren't really all that bad, I do enjoy truly evil villains. And Radiguet was one bad dude.
Spoiler
Even when he felt what it was like to be human, forgetting who he was and even falling in love; once he remembered, he just offed his girl without a thought and no regret. Just destroyed an innocent girl who dared to love him. And of course his betrayal of allies and completely selfish personal ambitions. Radiguet is an almost perfect representation of evil as I've seen in Sentai.

Favorite Theme Song: Man, so much good music in Super Sentai, no? I think I'll go with Shinkenger on this one.

Favorite series: Definitely Magiranger. The dynamic led to some very strong character relationships and really excellent storytelling.

Least favorite series: Gotta say Goseiger. It wasn't bad, per se, just generic and forgettable.

Favorite robo: GekiTouja, mostly because I thought the controlling method makes the most sense out of every series.

Least favorite robo: G20 cause it was such a clusterfuck

Favorite ranger: MagiPink or GokaiYellow. They're both very smart and somewhat spunky characters that know what they want and aren't afraid to get it but at the same time they are still very feminine.

Least favorite ranger: GoseiRed. He was very dull and predictable and didn't really have much growth throughout the series.

Favorite villain: Rio/Mele from Geki. They really worked the character development angle with these guys and it really did pay off in the end. I also have to put Kegareshia in here cause she was just so damn hilarious.

Least favorite villain: Baron Nero. I love his design but his character was just kinda one-note the whole series.

Favorite episode: The body-switching episode from Magiranger. That was done so well and absolutely hilarious. The actors had each other's mannerisms and speaking patterns down to a science. Fantastic episode.

Least favorite episode: The "pink has to get married" episode from Shinkenger. It's an old trope and pretty darn inaccurate these days.

Favorite theme song: I haven't watched the series, but I have to say Kakuranger XD

I loved Liveman too. Then series' ending was kind of sudden and abrupt but the storyline getting there was great. Episode 30 of Gokaiger is my favorite of that entire series just because of that OP song music cue when they Gokai-changed into the Livemen. Best moment in that entire series, IMO.

Damn, it's gonna be hard listing my favorites since there's a lot like Maskman, Jetman, Flashman, Dekaranger, Gekiranger, Shinkenger, Gokaiger, Kyouryuuger, and if Ninninger is keeping or upping the pace, it will be in too. Each series has their strong and weak point, but in the end they managed to do 1 thing to get them enlisted here: getting me hooked.

Least favorite series for me has to be Toqger. For a series about train, it fails to get me on board.

Favorite character: A team instead for me. If I can, I would choose Marvelous (Gokai), Nossan (Kyou), Sen-chan (Deka), Jasmine (Deka), Kasumi (Ninnin), Utsusemimaru (Kyou)/Gai (Gokai) for 6th. This is my favorite kind of character which mostly consists of Deka, Gokai, and Kyouryuu.

Favorite robo: To Daizyujin and Kakure Daishogun. The PR robo that introduce me to Sentai.

Least favorite robo: Toq-Oh. No need for explanation/ boner jokes, I guess.

Favorite villain: Rio/Mele. The reason Gekiranger is 1 of my favorite series. Because they are so well developed, the Gekirangers even had an impact/growth/development throughout the series.

Favorite theme song: Dekaranger's opening theme song. never gets old.

Fave Sentai: Gokaiger- I feel like their character dynamics were flawless, balanced, and displayed teamwork really well. It felt like everyone had depth, a moment in the spotlight, and a purpose for being on the team.

Least Fave: Kyouryuuger- Ironically I love all of the characters but I felt like their dynamic was either executed wrong or thrown off balance during the second half of the show.

Fave Robo: It's a tie between all the mecha in Gekiranger, MagiKing, Go-Buster Ace. I love all of them for different reasons and cannot go into depth on it or else this post will be entirely too long!

Least Fave: Another tie between all the mecha in Kyouryuuger and Toqger. None of them impressed me in abilities or design with the exceptions of Plezuon and Toq-Rainbow.

Fave Season: Gokaiger! I felt entertained throughout the show and the concept of obtaining grand powers made it feel like the show was constantly progressing instead of filler and a big event happens and filler and a big event happens etc.

Least Fave: I hate to say it but Go-Onger. I love the characters but it felt like the show dragged at times and nothing truly happened until the end.

Fave Villian: Enter with Zett running in close second. Enter was just awesome and I loved his interaction with the Go-Busters and Escape. It never felt like his feathers were ever ruffled and he had the best schemes of the past decade! Zett, on the other hand, made me feel sympathy for him and I honestly wanted him to achieve something. Plus, both of them had the best designs to go with their personalities. I would also mention Rio and Mele but I consider them more as anti-heroes.

Least Fave: The Zangyack and Deboss army. Their bark was worse than their bite to me.

Fave Fighting Style: I know its quite early to say this but I absolutely love the Ninningers' flashy fightworks. It keeps the fight fresh and non-repetitive and I hope they can keep it up. Second would be a tie between the excellent swordsmanship of the Shinkengers and kung-fu of the Gekirangers. Third is Goseiger for their card style but they would be higher if they used them more.

Least Fave: Go-busters. I loved their fights but I wish they had more to work with for it didn't feel like I was watching the same fight except with a different monster every week. Second is Kyouryuuger. I liked their wild style but what was the point of all those batteries if they rarely used them?

Fave Suit Design: I can't decide between Ninninger, Gokaiger, Gekiranger, Magiranger, Dekaranger, Ohranger, Dairanger, Maskman, and Sun Vulcan. All of them just look so cool!

Least Fave: Toqger and Gingaman. I love both seasons but one looks too plain while the other just looks weird.

Fave Pilot: The first episode of Gokaiger. Just watch it!

Least Fave: The first of Kyouryuuger. It's all about Daigo.

Favorite Finale: The end of Go-Busters. No other finale of Super Sentai kept me expecting to the very end like this one. It pulled at my heartstrings and the battles were superb.

Least Fave: The end of Kyouryuuger. It just left a bad taste in my mouth. :?

Fave Movie: Gokaiger vs. Gavan. I just love everything about the movie. There were one or two plotholes but nothing felt rushed and it really let the entire team shine. I just wish the robo fight at the end was longer.

Least Fave: Toqger: Galaxy Line SOS. It was just meh. :|

Fave Ranger: Joe from Gokaiger, J from Go-Busters, Kasumi from Ninninger, Hikari from Toqger, Ian from Kyouryuuger, and DEKAMASTER! This is my dream team

Least Fave: Daigo from Kyouryuuger. He was just OP and I feel like he was the biggest flaw of the show. Takaharu is becoming a close second but I'm hoping he'll improve over time.

P.S. Please take note that I've only seen all the sentai after Gaoranger and I'm not a hater of Kyouryuuger. It may seem like from my list but I really enjoyed it despite its flaws. Also, can we have a forum like this for Kamen Rider and Garo?! This is really making me want to rewatch these shows again.

Favorite Sentai season;

1. Dekaranger
2. Boukenger
3. Gokaiger
4. Goggle V
5. Go on ger

I really can't compare the old times classics to our current times sentai. The classics era I may marked maybe from Gorenger to Jetman, where everything seems basic and generic. Nowdays, super sentai is really catching eyes, actor /actresses are young and trend setter, story wise also much interesting.

go go super sentai!
