Our response to rumored Japan copyright law change

Post by takenoko »

I received a few e-mails asking if we were going to change anything in response to supposed changes to Japanese copyright law. I couldn't find a direct source for the news? Like someone posted an image, but it cited animenewsnetwork on there, but I didn't see the article that was being referred to?

Lacking more information, we're just going to continue as we have in the past, I guess

It is a thing, but it's an extension from what they had before which only applied to music and movies, to any form of media. I think its mostly supposed to be directed at manga piracy.

Catastrophe's correct. Akamatsu-sensei's been the main voice of the manga-ka throughout the process and has even been on news shows discussing it. I'd read a lot of updates on his official Twitter earlier this year before I quit social media.

From what I remember, the push was basically an extension of copyright law to protect manga-ka from piracy. He'd already pioneered a digital manga library several years ago so readers could enjoy out-of-print manga legally, but I don't remember if the proposed legal changes mentioned the site or not.

The new changes won't affect the vast majority of what T-N does, only the (very rare) manga translations, and even then, I'm not sure if the group would be facing any form of legal repercussion since the handful of works than have popped up here have always been hard to get or initially obscure. Most likely, anyone looking at a KR or SS manga translation would give it about as much attention as a magazine announcement scan. And that's even IF they find where those gems are buried in the torremts.

They did a pretty good write-up of it.

As the article mentions, sites like T-N won't face penalties for posting screenshots of toy ads in magazines or similar material, since it's not the entire work. A lot of other material that could have been called into question is also still legal. The only risk is with the torrents due to the new restrictions on sites that link to content, but I don't believe fansub groups are at any risk themselves unless they're based in Japan. This COULD change in future if other countries adopt the new policies.

I firmly believe companies such as Toei are not only well aware of TV-Nihon and other fansub groups, but even fre2quent the forums. They've shown silent respect for the way fansubbers remove any material that's officially licensed. It drums up a lot of business for production and toy companies because it artificially extends their fanbase without cutting into profits in regions their content is readily available.

I've always seen the Zi-O Supplementaries as them making fun of themselves. Like the Producer is the leader of Shocker, or blow up Toei or drowning the producers seems good examples in that direction to me.
