I got fed up with uTorrent constantly yelling at me to update to an even more ad-infested experience., so I switched to Tixati recently. Ad-free, and it can make .torrent files. It seems to have more options for powerusers, as well.

I've been using CCCP for codec for ages. Been sufficently reliable for playbacks using Windows Media Player. http://www.cccp-project.net/ No ads or anything annoying, just install and thats it :P

Btw, you can disable ads on uTorrent http://www.wikihow.com/Remove-Sponsored ... m-uTorrent
Look at my uTorrent. So clean and pretty

Personally I prefer VLC for playback because it can play any type of video file.

I like to Use Potplayer for Windows. It feel better than using VLC.

For mac I like to use Mplayer Extended. Just that the installation for this one can be a little tricky

For Torrent I was once a fan of uTorrent, but then I switch to qBittorrent. It runs and provides the same features that uTorrent runs on.

Page updated. Remember you can add to the wiki too if you're good with programming languages

For playback i use a combo of MPC/GOM/WMP. WMP only comes into play if MPC and/or GOM screw up. by that i mean MPC will cycle thru all files in the folder before playing the first file with out issue, and GOM will "rewind" the file at 10 second intervals until its at the beginning of the file's runtime. for torrent purposes i use utorrent and never had any major problems aside from it being stuck at "Finding Peers" from time to time.

For my media needs in Windows I use the K-Lite Codec Pack, it packs EVERY codec you'll ever need and can be set up to play with both MPC (included) or WMP. It can be found here: http://codecguide.com/

For Linux I use Mplayer, using GNOME Mplayer as frontend. Gstreamer is also good, but heavy on low resource machines.

For torrents I use µTorrent on Windows and Transmission on Linux and yes, ads can be disabled in µTorrent.

If you ever have the need to resize or convert video I strongly recommend Handbrake (https://handbrake.fr/), simply one of the best video converters around. Aviable for Windows, Mac and Linux.

Noticed Xvid and Mplayer were lacking links, so I Googled them and added the links to the wiki page. :)

Even with ads disabled, µTorrent 3.0+ is garbage and its UI is hideous.

That said, here's a link to the 3.0 installer, the last decent release. I've never had any issues with it bugging me to update, I just click "No" when it asks me the first time after unchecking "Always check for updates to this version."

ive just switched back to 3.0 from 3.4.2 and cannot figure out how to get a list of files in the torrent before you start the download. what do i do?

Edit: i figured it out after doing a little web searching. there is a button to toggle torrent view (though this should have been what happens by default.)

I dunno man, it usually pops up a list of files when I start the torrent. You can always click the active torrent and cancel out the files you don't want too.

There's also mplayer2, which is a fork of mplayer because mplayer stopped getting updated.

Then there's mpv, which is a fork of mplayer2 because mplayer2 stopped getting updated. http://mpv.io/

I typically use mpv on Linux.

Also, for Android there's xbmc and vlc (which are open source), Wondershare, and MX player. The latter two are not open-source but because of proprietary hardware decoding on many Android devices they may be faster. Non-open-source players on android typically still rip off ffmpeg code.
