What I don't understand is, you guys take off all other licensed stuff besides the sentai? You know more then half the sentai on here is already licensed.

I don't see any sentai released in sub form from the market.

Which half and where is it licensed? If you're talking about Hong Kong subbed DVDs, those are bootlegs

You do realize that being licensed and being made into another series are two completly diffrent things, right?

Technically, through the Berne convention after WWII, anything copyrighted in Japan is copyrighted in America and Britain. Subbing and downloading is still copyright infringement. I'm not preaching that it's bad to sub, just alerting that it is still illegal whether or not there's been a domestic copyright.

I only know this because I receive the copyright infringement notifications for my university and have to respond to them to the letter of the law. We've been receiving plenty of them from companies that protect Japanese interests here on American soil.

I'm not trying to convince you to take anything down, just pointing out a flaw in the logic you guys use to justify removing series. If you are trying to follow the letter of the law, everything should be taken down, not just series that are released in other countries.

That may very well be true, fansubbing is illegal, everyone knows that. But they take down the licensed stuff because it's a bit more ethical. By taking down the licensed stuff they aren't hurting profits that would be made from the R1 releases.

It's not really a logical justification so much as a rule of thumb. It's not that we think fansubbing is legal because it's not licensed in America. It's more like most Japanese companies won't go after fansubbers since our target audience is mostly non-Japanese. When it's licensed by America, suddenly our work could potentially become damaging to a local company's profit capabilities. That might make them go after us. That's why licensed stuff goes down, plus it's the right thing to do. We want to encourage companies to release high quality DVDs with good subs on them

Well, I'm from Singapore. Fansubs are the only way we can get Japanese live action shows and not-so-popular-in-Singapore animes, since it takes forever for them to import any (if they do that in the first place).

Aside from anime and live action, there's still like mp3s. I mean I can't find any OSTs of any Japanese live-action or animes...

I don't trust some sites. And I'm still schooling, so my mum doesn't allow me to use her credit card.

Might be time to start fluttering those eye lashes and making the puppy dog faces then.
