Are there any new features? How is it different from Stardust Accelerator or Revenge of Arcadia? Is Turbo Dueling in the game? WE NEED DETAILS, DETAILS, DETAILS!

Anyways...

I recently purchased Borderlands on PS3 and it's been a pretty fun experience. The game has been called a combination of Fallout 3, Halo and a sprinkle of other FPS with an RPG twist to it. The game also has a great cel-shaded cartoon like feel to it and the characters you meet in the game help accommodate for the design choice. The single player campaign is pretty long but I've managed to get in 20hrs with the game and hopefully I'll be able to get to the end game for the series by the end of the week.
Oh yeah there's turbo dueling in the game its okay though but the speed spells are so limited. There's only 3 packs for it in the pack shop. And they added Free CPU Turbo Duels, Free CPU Tag Team, Free CPU Tag Team Turbo duels. The game is pretty easy as long as you have a good deck in it.

Currently, I'm playing the New Game+ on Persona 3.
It's basically the same game all over again, except not. Your(\the MC's) level that you finished the game with (in my case, 97) remains the exact same when you start the option up. So, I have to try to make sure I don't overkill everything,. Another plus is that the MC's social stats stay the same (as last time) so, it's easier to start any Social Links you might have missed the first time around. Everyone else's levels reset though so you have to go back to grinding and leveling with them.

But yeah, the game itself is still really fun; voice-acting (with a couple exceptions) is top-notch and the music's great as always.

I been playing Star Fox 64 3D and it's a pretty good game. It's like the original Star Fox from the SNES days but with much better graphics and get to play two other vehicles (submarine and tank). I didn't play the original Star Fox 64 on the N64 but there is an option for that type of control (guessing using the D-Pad instead of the circle pad). Also the gyro controls can be turn off or on. One more thing about the controls, usually I don't like to invert my up and down but in this case I had to since it was confusing when you move the Arwing visually.

As for the actual game itself, you can easily finish it in 90 minutes but there's plenty of replay with getting medals for getting a certain amount of hits or achieving certain goals to access new ways to get to the final mission. I really love the graphics job that Nintendo did for the 3DS version. The water almost looks life like (see the Zoness mission especially) and the final boss looks so amazing.

The other game I played a bit of was Metroid: Other M on the Wii. Since this was developed by Team Ninja instead of Retro Studios so the control scheme is different from the Metroid Prime games. In Metroid Prime 3: Corruption, it was all first-person which you use the Wii Remote to aim and look while using the Nuchuck to move around. In Other M, you don't have the Nuchuck which is bad because you need to go diagonal and have to use the Remote horizontally. Most of the game is in third person but you can switch to first person to use missiles, look around more closely, or aim something accurately but with no movement.

I guess this time instead of collecting new equipment (but you still collect Energy, Missile, and Power Bomb expansions), you need to wait for authorization to use your equipment. At least it's not your typical some freaky event happened and lost the ability to use most of the suit functions like in the Prime games. This game fits in between Super Metroid and Metroid Fusion by the way.

Half-Minute Hero PSP version

Post by takenoko »

Like RPGs, but don't have time to play them? Then play half minute hero, where you have to beat every evil lord in 30 seconds! And that's pretty much the conceit of the game. But it's a good one and a lot more deep than you'd expect.

The writing is funny and the characters are surprisingly amusing. You get help from the Time Goddess who is unabashedly in love with money. You pay her to get more time. You can take weapons and armor to the next level, but your level is returned to one each time. You can replay quests to get a better score, to get achievements known as titles, and for branching story related stuff (like meeting characters, or changing paths). There's 30 levels total, but there's 50 possible levels if you want to do them all.

The achievement system is pretty nice. From the main menu you can look at the Goddess Room which keeps track of how many items and monsters and bosses that you discover. This unlocks concept art which is surprisingly cool and stylish considering everything in-game is super deformed and very not serious.

And that's not all, beyond the Hero 30 quest there are at least 5 other game styles. Like you can play as an Evil Lord and a Princess. The Evil Lord game is kind of more strategic. While the Princess' game is more of a shoot 'em up. There's a few other stages, but they're story related so I don't want to give too much info. Let's just say that if you like the end game of Dragon Quest 4, it's something like that and it was awesome (and challenging because it's quite hard)

I don't remember how much I paid for it, but it's probably not that much at the PSN store and you get quite a lot of gameplay for it.

The one thing I want to recommend is to not get the Xbox version which seems to have removed content. You don't get the unlockables at the end, they redid the side missions so that they're just like the Hero's game (or something?) and the bonus Another Goddess stage was removed (this was a stage in the Hero's quest that was about as big as several of the other quests)

The English wiki is also sort of lame. http://halfminutehero.wikia.com/wiki/Li ... o_monsters

You'd probably get more help using the Japanese wiki
http://translate.google.com/translate?p ... ry_state0=

Plus there's a real good FAQ on that was updated within the last month.

Been playing SRT A Portable latlely. Let me say this, it is batshit hard. Like SRW 3 hard. I'm actually having to use tactics and terrain advantages to win. I think the difficulty is stupid though. It mainly comprises of giving bosses really high HP and having them heal 1/3rd of it a turn, or having a stage with a really tight turn limit, or combing both together.

Not to mention, that the mooks have really high dodge rates and really high accuracy, being able to hit other real units with ease. They have stupid high HP and do heaps of damage to boot, being able to take out a super in a few hits. One has to blow 3 spirit commands per turn just to hit the bastards and stay alive.

I got stuck on the Don Sauzer fight for a while. Apparantly this is notorious for being the most difficult fight in the game (if not the whole series). I eventually had to resort to using the game over/replay trick to get more cash and PP to upgrade my units and pilots. Mainly because I was doing a real robot run, I had no upgraded supers, so I couldn't damage him enough, and they would go down in one shot if they where hit (which was quite often). Still, goes to show that Getter Robo should not be underestimated.

It's a challenge to say the least. If you are seasoned with some of the other titles, then you might want to give it a crack. If you don't have the patience however, I'd probably avoid it lol.

A friend of mine is fortunate enough to own a Kinect and I live close enough to her that when she gets a new game for it, I get to humiliate myself play as well. Yesterday I got to play Just Dance 3, and it was pretty damn fun. There are a lot of recent songs and oldies, and there's a good range of styles, from disco to "shake yo bootay" to Bollywood to vaguely interpretive dance. The tracklist is nicely varied (one of the complains I've had about recent DDR games is that they're mostly recent pop songs and not enough Konami songs), and the choreography is challenging but still extremely fun. It's one of those games that's fun by yourself or with friends, especially ones where the choreography is especially designed for 2 or more players, like with my favorite track last night "This is Halloween".

Of course, the whole reason why I'm posting this is to inform you of this song:

Sentai Express - Spectronizer

It's not based on any toku (As far as I can google), but it's quite fun to play and hey, who doesn't want to henshin? If you've got a Wii or a Kinect I definitely recommend picking up the game.

ICO/Shadow of the Colossus collection

Post by takenoko »

If you hear anything about video games, then I'm sure you've heard about these two games. If not, they're pretty important games from the PS2 era that you should really check out. They're beautifully done artful games that people refer to quite often. It's really telling how art direction can affect the way one feels about a game and how it really makes the game an experience to be had. I highly recommend that people play them for themselves.

ICO: I just finished the 2 hour speed run last night and got the platinum for this game. I was kind of surprised to see in the bonus material that the team who did this seemed relatively new to making games. I mean, both these games suffer the kind of awkward PS2 era controls and awkward camera, but you can tell a lot of thought was put into giving the player a certain experience.

About the actual game content itself, spoilers for maybe the whole game:
Spoiler
While this whole game is an escort quest, it really doesn't seem as bad as when a game forces a short escort mission on you. Maybe it's because the whole game is an escort? Yorda's AI can definitely be frustrating though, like she'll let go if she gets caught on a corner, or she'll go up a ladder part of the way then climb down, or she won't move on her own so a monster catches her, etc. Not really noticeable until you're speedrunning it.

The final platforming segment is pretty hard, plus it's after all the shit goes down, so you're past the final save point. If you're speed running the game, the first 90 minutes is guarding Yorda, the last 30 minutes is getting past the platforming section and having the boss fight with the queen. I really like the boss fight, which is more of a puzzle than anything else.

Oh yeah, but before the queen, you have to kill a million shadow guys... who you might notice for the first time also have horns like our hero. I've read some conspiracy theories that the queen is trying to harness the darkness from Shadow of the Colossus

And that last part where you wake up alone on the beach after the credits. Oh man, that was pretty good. You start running, wondering why you're able to control the character, and you run along the beach, not knowing where you're going... That was pretty great authorial directing. In fact, the whole game can be praised for being smart in being reserved and subtle and letting the player discover things for themselves.

Shadow of the Colossus: What a fun game. With each boss having his own mechanic, it took me a while to get through this the first time. The climbable bosses is basically what Monster Hunter 4 is going to want to be like, yet this came out years ago? Weird!

Anyway, when I finished the game I had like less than 40% of the trophies. Apparently skipping the manual and not being observant makes you miss a lot of potential content. Wait! There's stuff in this world besides a bunch of bosses for me to hunt down and kill?! Weird!

I'm currently working on replaying the game in hard mode. Maybe after that I'll do some of the speed runs to unlock items and get some more trophies.

As for the story itself, it's kind of fun to pretend you're this guy who's doing this thing for this girl. At the same time, you wonder if the voice of God you're talking to will keep his end of the bargain once this whole thing is done. Things happen and you wonder what's happening to yourself, etc. At the end, there's this real tragic scene, and you begin to wonder if this is all worth it in the end, because what if you make all these sacrifices and you still end up not saving the girl? This game could have been pretty dark.

Not without its flaws, but it's such an amazing game experience.

Oh yeah, I think I should mention that both ICO and Shadow are based on the Europeon versions of the game. And while these versions are harder, they also have more features than were included in the American versions. Like ICO has the new game plus features and Shadow is... harder? I'm a little annoyed by the difficulty to do basic climbing in Shadow, but overall it seems like the right decision to use these versions. ICO also is a bit harder, but the extras are totally worth it.

As I've said a few times, they're beautiful games. They're a steal at whatever price you get them. Check them out because they're must-plays in gaming history.

Batman Arkham City

Post by takenoko »

So last night I finished getting everything for Batman except the Calendar Man trophy. I thought it was pretty awesome. A lot of people seem to be bothered by the side mission stuff, but if you're going to be Batman prowling the city of Gotham, it kind of makes sense that every once in a while you need to swoop down and stop a mugging in progress or something. The fighting was fun and it was great to see all the Batman allies and villains in this.

The writing was also pretty good. Just sitting around and listening to the guys commenting on the state of the world changes could be pretty amusing in it of itself.

The ending was pretty bold and unexpected. The Arkham games are pretty great and probably should be on everyone's must-play lists.

Still have my Catwoman campaigns to go.

Driver: San Fransico

So ubisoft finally made a decent Driver game in quite some time, they went back to the classic format that was the game, Driving, none of that stupid running around they had you do in Driv3r.

The story line was pretty cool, simple in its design, but good enough to keep you playing all the way through the game to the completion, the main missions had some good depth to them, but could have done with some more fleshing out and possibly more of them, I only say that as I completed the story within 4, 4 hour sessions, not something a game should have really, and thats with doing half of the side missions that they get you do, but the missions were fun to do, even some of them had their tricky parts to them, especially when Jericho attacks, it makes you think "hmmm, normal tatics dont work, must try something else"

As for the side missions, they get abit repetitive after a while, especially the dares as its just upping the amount you have to do to complete the dare, such as "Do a 20m jump" then "Do a 30m jump" and so on, but if you are aiming for the plat, then you do need to do these, even the dreaded thrill cam dares, which let me tell you are a pain the ass, to give you an idea, its a setting that uses ALL the camera angles in a cycle, never staying on one for very long.

As for the handling, I was skeptical when I played the demo, but with the full game it was actually alright on the handling, you just have to remember to feather the throttle on some of the more tricky turns, also the handbrake does come in handy for once, as for picking your car, you really should aim for a balanced car, cars with more speed tend to oversteer and understeer, cars with more drift tend to be rubbish in a straight line, I spent most of the game using the Nissian 370Z, a great balanced car that handled real well on near enough all surfaces.

There is 3 great challanges in the game that will test your skills, the first is Lombard Street, you have to drive down this without hitting anything (bollards and jump landings included) at over 20mph, sounds easy doesnt it, its not as traffic is also present on the road if you are unlucky, not to mention if you overdo the breaks you might as well just restart the challange again, tests your cornering skills well, the 2nd is complete a Getaway challange in a Car Transporter, this is soooo hard on many levels, you cant use pure speed as its just sluggish, it makes you fight in a new way to get rid of the cops and make it to the destination in time, I only made it with 0.01 seconds left on the clock, thats how tricky it can be, and the last great challange "Blast from the past", you remember that driving test on the first game, well that makes a return, and its just as tricky as the first one, took a while to get the right order and pacing of the skills you have to demonstrate in the test, but its good fun.

I did have fun with this game, a nice little gem of a game that should be played atleast once, even if its just for the Blast from the past challange, I just hope the online play is just as good so that I can go and bag the plat for this game.

Assassin's Creed Revelations

So I just beat Revelations. First thing to note is, I'm kind of disappointed by the lack of interesting end music for games this year compared to previous installments. (Batman Arkham City had pretty inferior music compared to Asylum too)

Overall, it's very much the same game as Brotherhood with refinements. The overall game seems a lot less frustrating than Brotherhood, especially when it comes to requirements for full sync. The only real problem I had was the mission start thing not showing up and telling me what was required for full sync (so I inadvertently failed a few by accident)

As Luna mentioned, they really fixed the "I'm a millionaire halfway through the game" problem that's in two and Brotherhood. You need money really badly in this game. Another tweak they made is they really punish you for having high notoriety. Remember the areas you liberated from the Borgia in Brotherhood? You can lose that territory unless you can win at a pretty hard strategy game that's new to Revelations. But it works, you really don't want to lose your territory since that means less money and getting stuck playing an awful strategy game. Just more of Ubisoft trying to cram every game mechanic into the Assassin's Creed franchise.

The Altair parts are pretty short, but I like the guy, so it's good to see him again. Kind of sucks about his life though. You really don't get to see him as a leader of the Assassins. It's more the downfall of Altair.

The overall feel of the game is pretty lonely compared to the previous games. It's like Metal Gear Solid 4 with Old Snake but none of his friends.

Spoilers for the actual game:
Spoiler
Claudia only appears by name. Lucy's dead. It's just Desmond and subject 16. You hear voices of the others occasionally, but it's not really much. And they really don't explain Lucy's death very well. The ending is also the usual "strange stuff happens and you get no answers at the end, so stay tuned for the next game." Overall I hope the next game is the last Assassin's Creed, they've pretty much scraped the bottom of the story barrel here.

I've got about the same opinion as take, pretty much a continuation of Brotherhood, fixed the money problem, aged up Ezio nicely so that he now appears on my list of "old guys I would still bang" (next to Sean Connery and Patrick Stewart).

One thing I will say though: I hate hate haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaate the Desmond parts. Desmond has always been the weak point of the series for me cause he's really bland (so as to make the audience identify with him more) and not particularly interesting. So when they put in a whole five sequences just for him, well you can imagine my joy. It's not only that it's about Desmond, oh no, it's the fact that they made it so weird, so dissimilar from anything AC's ever done before that it just comes off as jarring and irrelevant.

For starters, it's in 1st person camera. With the exception of Portal, I don't think there's any game that's ever pulled off a platformer in 1st person, because you need to be able to see where you're going in relationship to where you've been, and how close you are to the edge of something before you fall off. Honestly, most of the levels feel like the designer was like "Hey, what's Portal got that we don't? Let's make something better, but with tetris blocks instead of portals!" The mechanics are frustrating, the reasoning questionable, and to be frankly honest I'd rather go on a search for the symbols again with the funky apple clues because at least those had one set answer and I could just gamefaq the hell out of them. It's stupid and annoying, and after I finished them I felt a profound sense of "Thank god, now I never have to do that again" which is something you should NEVER think after finishing a game.

Yeah, I have to agree with that. It's basically Desmond's journey through geometry world. This is definitely worse than the similar thing in Brotherhood, since it's in first person. So you're in a bland world with no music. You're playing an unfun puzzle, which can be kind of confusing at times. The moment you get stuck in a part and have to do it 5-6 times, it can be really frustrating because it's not fun or interesting. I barely looked around to see the visuals that accompanied Desmond's narrative, since they're just flickers on the wall anyway. It's just a really poor way of relaying a story.

Plus there was the weird thing with Ubisoft announcing a new Assassin's Creed next year before Revelations came out. At this point, what will it even be about? Since this one makes for a nice conclusion for Altair and Ezio's stories, it really is the most logical choice for ending Desmond's as well.

So I dusted off one of my PSPs and started back playing my copy of Power Stone Collection again.

This game has a lot of neat extras and bonuses like the promotional material that was released for the local testing and stuff that you would have seen on the arcade booth for both games. It also has the concept art for the characters and stages, a sound option where you can listen to the music/sfx for PS1 and 2, a collection of all the VMU games that were a part of PS1's DC release and you can play with the four new characters from Power Stone 2 in Versus/Network Play in Power Stone 1.

The gameplay differs depending on which game you play. Power Stone's gameplay is 1 VS 1 combat in a closed area and has a lot of depth where a beginner can easily pick up the game and feel like they can handle themselves in a fight while Power Stone 2 made a few changes that took out one of the component's that made PS1 shine to make it even simpler, the stages are now open ended and constantly change due to triggered events and now you can engage in either: 1 VS 1 , 1 VS 2 , 1 VS 3, 2 VS 2 or a 4-way Battle to the death.

I've spent enough time with both games and after playing them both I still have a better time with the first game since you can actually get better with playing the game as you continue to play while with PS2 it kinda feels like a decent party game you play with some friends and requires little to no skill to play while that it's not a bad thing but it really feels like a step in the wrong direction with a follow-up to a sequel to a great game like Power Stone.

I definitely suggest if you don't have this game for the PSP it should be picked up. You can buy it for 9.99 in the PSN Store or even cheaper from a local game shop or online.

Even though I haven't beaten the main story of Revelations, I will these things about it. The combat is probably the best yet even including the fact that they remove taunting so it makes certain enemies more of a pain to deal with. I don't like the fact that your notoriety goes up every time you buy a new store but I guess it makes it more important to bribe heralds and kill officials to reduce it. The tower defense part was a bit hard at first but once you start getting new units, it becomes quite fun to do. The one thing I don't quite understand about the tower defense is the sync score. How does it come up with that score? There's really no explanation about it. Training your assassins is more complex and even come with different weapon sets which is something to paid attention to since some contract missions require a certain weapon to do. I do miss blowing up a tower but I guess you don't want to blow your own dens.

As for the Desmond parts, I like the idea of them for the most part. It was annoying at times of trying to figure out what to do with the platforming but fulfilling when you do figure it out. The final sequence I truly love since it brings the whole thing to full circle because it's a callback to the first game.
