Re: Cutie Honey 15
I kind of agree about the stereotyping though. But it's really no different than when the Japanese throw an angry black man into their shows. It's fiction, it's not a big deal.
Also, I think I read somewhere that Wataru comes from New York

Re: Cutie Honey 15
I was thinking it said in an episode that he's from NY or something. But I still don't see how that particular scene was supposed to have been racist or whatever. But ohwell. o_O;
I’m the one nightmares are afraid of.
Re: Cutie Honey 15
That was the recap episode. Yeah, he's from New York. Ironically, It's no different than how most Americans view New Yorkers, except that Mark Musashi actually speaks with clear, midwestern unaccented English instead of... whatever New Yorkers speak.Saejima Kouga wrote:I was thinking it said in an episode that he's from NY or something. It's too bad Americans have such a bad stereotyping among Japanese. It's hard to walk around Japan as an American; if anyone goes, try and convince them that you're German. And surprise them by speaking Japanese, they won't expect that from Americans either.

Re: Cutie Honey 15
Well, I wouldn't say it was racist, but having him go blank over the tongue twister did make him seem a bit more like a white guy stumbling over Japanese. I mean, there's nothing wrong with stereotypes, Nakajou and Cutie Honey aren't exactly winning any awards for being the most realistic characters either XD
Edit: Actually, Mark Musashi grew up in the North East I believe

Re: Cutie Honey 15
Well, there are a lot of stereotypes in the Panther Claw villains.
Watari - Typical American Asshole
Tanaka - Typical fishmonger (they all look like that in anime, dramas, etc)
Karasugawa - Kinky, lustful dominatrix. I had kind of hoped she would be Sister Jill, but no such adherence to the original.
Nakajou - Less of a stereotype than the rest, even though he is obviously "broken." Which is why he is likely to become the stereotypical "bad guy that turns good" or "bad guy that dies saving the good guys at the last minute" or something like that. Ugh.
The Honey's are all some sort of archetype too. The Innocent Ditz, the Jaded Dark character, the Spoiled Rich girl... and none of them even close to how Honey was portrayed in the 70's.
I'm being too picky, this is just a mindless action show. It's not like it's bad or anything. ;P

Re: Cutie Honey 15
^ I think you're wrong. >0 And you wrote 'Wataru' instead of 'Watari' in your first post of this page. It made me wonder if Wataru came from NY and why he was included in the CH discussion. I feel misled.
Re: Cutie Honey 15
If you'd followed the previous page's conversation, you wouldn't have been confused. If you were even following the show, you wouldn't be confused. Watari is pretty unique.

Mark Musashi was born in Japan, raised in the U.S. (in Maine), and decided to go back to Japan after he graduated college. He also went to China to study Shaolin Kung Fu.

You guys are all just getting really silly now...
I don't care where Mark comes from, he's amazing either way and the producers must know it too or they wouldn't hire him for such awesome shows.
