Go-Onger 33 released

Seiblue wrote:Hey Takenkoko, I'm a huge fan of TV-Nihon and at the same time am a language freak. Heh, I was just hoping to provide my suggestions for translations of the new Engines' names as well as this ancient Banki Clan Gaiark's been mentioning (since I've had a chance to see the original kana) so that TV-Nihon's subs are as perfect as can be. :)

First, the ancient Engines. キシャモス is easy since it comes from the Japanese word for a steam train, 汽車 (kisha), and the English word 'mammoth' (マンモス). This makes Kishamoth.

ティライン and ケライン prove difficult for most people. I mostly see "Tyrain" and "Kerain" for these two, but the first has a big problem. "Tyrain" is translating the first syllable, but leaves the rest to transliteration (romanization, if you will). If they're not going to translate the whole word, why not keep it 'Tirain'? 'Kerain' is fine since it is entirely just a romanization of the kana.

ティライン is a train car Engine based on a tyrannosaurus. 'Tyrannosaurus' is approximated into Japanese as ティラノザウルス. We see the same ティ combination that is in the Engine's name, so it is safe to assume a relevant word with the same combination would be apart of its name, so we take that ty- part. The ライン part of ティライン's name is just like the Japanese approximation of the English word 'line', another relevant word to trains. Many subways and trains use the word 'line' to describe paths they take, so we use this line. This logic makes ティライン's name in English Tyline.

ケライン is a train car Engine based on a triceratops. 'Triceratops' is approximated into Japanese as トリケラトプス. We see the same ケラ combination that is in the Engine's name, so it is safe to assume a relevant word with the same combination would be apart of its name, so we take that -cera- part. The ライン part of ケライン's name is likely derived from the same word and used in the same way as in Tyline's name, so it's safe to take the line.

This gives us a few ways to translate ケライン's name: Cerine, Celine, Kerine, or Keline. 'Cerine' and 'Celine' because the Engine's name is obviously making use of the word 'line' and the '-cera-' part of 'triceratops' and fusing the meanings that ラ provides. While I'd normally say 'Cerine' would be right, it breaks the pattern in Engines 11 and 12's names with ライン. 'Celine' would be better than 'Cerine'. On top of that, 'Celine' is an actual name. 'Kerine' and 'Keline' because the Japanese have a tendency to translate C's that have K-like pronunciations as K's. I've seen that in Digimon on at least one occasion, so it's not unlikely we'd see 'Kerine' or 'Keline', but because of the ライン patter, we're more likely to see 'Keline' than 'Kerine'.

My judgment for ケライン comes down to 'Celine' being the actual intended name. However, I also noticed a while ago that simply saying ティライン and ケライン brings to mind "T Line" and "K Line". Subways and trains often label their paths (lines) with letters, colors, numbers, etc. It's not unlikely that these two Engines could also be called "T Line" and "K Line". Though, at best, I think these would just be puns on the names and not the actual names themselves.

For the ancient Engines, I'd call them Engine Kishamoth, Engine Tyline, and Engine Celine.

As for the ancient banki shown here, it is accompanied by the kana ホロンデルタール. Even as I typed the kana, my Japanese language tool tried suggesting "滅んでるタール". It proves the point I was going to make that the first portion of this banki's name comes from the root verb 滅ぼす (horobosu to destroy) or 滅びる (horobiru to be destroyed). This fits Gaiark's theme well. As for the second half of the banki's name, we know that it is also ancient and tried to invade Earth thousands of years ago. Well, the last six kana in ホロンデルタール match the last six kana in ネアンデルタール (neanderutāru Neanderthal), an approximation of an ancient creature. I think it's safe to say 滅んでる and Neanderthal make up this banki's name. I suggest the translation come out as 'Horonderthal'.

Thank you for reading this. I greatly appreciate it and the chance to improve TV-Nihon's fansubs. Thanks. :)

I was actually wondering what the names would be. XD Kisamoth was straightforward, though I had thought you guys would go with T-Line and K-Line. But I guess I lose out to the guy who actually knows Japanese.

I wish they actually talked though. I mean, okay, it makes sense that they can't, seeing as how they came to Earth before language was invented, but still. It's going to be kind of hard to give them personalities without speech. They probably won't even get cartoon forms, which kinda sucks.

I also wondered who was going to pilot Kyouretsu-O. I figured they weren't going to introduce a new Go-Onger, but you never know. Guess that's settled at least.

At any rate I don't think I've ever seen a Sentai hero take on a grown adversary like that (though again, my experience is limited). That was pretty awesome. Also, the line about Sousuke being primitive made me laugh. So yeah, great episode overall.

Sousuke has lost any appeal he may have had from previous episodes. I don't think he strikes a good balance of "hot-headed hero" and "cool hero." Although, I'm not sure what you would characterize him in terms of "hero." I guess his hot-headedness was just annoying in this episode.

Spoiler
So are they trying the toy route to promote Go-Onger? Because they have created an ungodly amount of mecha for this show.

I wonder if the writers are really trying for a GunpeixHanto relationship because every episode I've yet to be convinced otherwise.

Spoiler
Maybe next one though from the looks of the previews

wow... Sousuke managed to lift something 100 times his weight! He's superman in disguise!

The Horontherdal sounds like a main boss in the show...

So, an eagle, a lion, a bear, an orca, a german shephard, an alligator, a chicken, a tiger, a whale, a mammoth, a T-Rex and a triceratops... What next? An alien from Mars? (1 more to match Dekaranger's 13, 6 more to match Boukenger's 18, another 13 more to match the 25 that appeared in Gaoranger!)

Spoiler
The new Mecha reminds me of the one from Zyuranger.. and not just cuz they're both dinos  but they both have the triceratops left foot, they both have the big horns on the side of the head, and their eyes flash when the horns lock into place
Image

And the way they keep looking for Horontherdal.. makes me think he's gonna come in, throw them out, and take over and they're just gonna be emo and drunk the rest of the time.. til maybe the last ep and suddenly they'll join up with the Go-Ongers to take down Horontherdal cuz he wants to destroy Earth, not just polute it

Interesting design for Kyouretsu-O looks like it has the same build and stock of KillerOh from Abaranger with the head of Daizyujin from Zyuranger. This is what the 3rd train mech we've had in a sentai series the first being Grand Liner in GoGo-V and the second being Travelion from Magirangers, i'm surprised they don't use them more since trains seem to be an integral part of Japanese society.

I think Grand Liner is still the best train mech so far.

So Sosuke gets 4 engines?
The most any of the others have is 1.5.
I may be lying

Sousuke getting four engines is crazy but now he serves more like a comic relief characters than the previous red sentai We've seen in the past plus to me my knowledge is Ren or Hiroto serves more leader-type than Sousuke's

Not a bad episode. Not great, but not bad.

The ending scene left me bewildered. Could someone explain what was going on between Hanto and Gunpei? The way they started chasing after each other seemed unusually frivolous...even for Go-onger...and I didn't understand the comment about Gunpei also blushing. Was this a reference to an earlier episode or did I just miss something?

OMG I just lolled all over the place.

I'm sure yaoi fangirls are having a ball with Go-Onger. I would find it so funny if the two get together in the end. Like maybe they'll travel the world, promoting clean air and end up living together. I don't know...I'm just saying...I would not at all be surprised...
