Monster Hunter P3 HD
So I recently picked up Monster Hunter P3 HD. It's all in Japanese! What's up with that?
Well, it's me waiting for Capcom for over a year to localize it. But not to worry, there are sites and such to help you cope with the Japaneeezieness of it.
There's a wiki that puts the Japanese and English side to side:
http://www.mhf3.com/
Edit, another P3 wiki thanks to SWD:
http://mhp3.otacoo.com/
Jew Wario created a video guide for it:
http://www.blisteredthumbs.net/2011/10/ ... w-to-play/
And of course there's the generic Monster Hunter wiki:
http://monsterhunter.wikia.com/wiki/Monster_Hunter_Wiki
I mean, if you played FU, you've probably got a pretty good handle of what items are what just from the icons. But it is a little frustrating to pick up an item and not really know what it is
So I made some videos of my first time playing it. Yes, there's soft sub commentary, as usual. Just to give an idea of what the game is like. Sorry about the quality, it looks like my thing recorded it at 480i.

Sorry about using sendspace. Megaupload is gone and Multiupload is up and down at the moment. If someone knows of a better place to host files, please let me know.

Re: Monster Hunter P3 HD
My copy of P3 should be arriving shortly. I've gotten bored with 3G, probably because it is so close to Tri and I sank so many hours into that. Am watching this thread keenly however.

Re: Monster Hunter P3 HD
I suppose you don't have a PS3 so you can't play over the Internet, right Catastrophe? The real fun in Monster Hunter isn't playing alone.
I didn't have time to play tonight, but I did some video recording in case I wanted to add some stuff to the MHP3 wiki. That OOO movie isn't going to translate itself, after all.
But in the meantime, you can check out my guild card:
Like in FU, you can change the title. Mine is current Na mo naki no Stranger or "The nameless stranger"
You can see the number of times I've done quests.
Village Elder
Guild Lower
Guild Higher
(No G level, unfortunate)
Spa counter (Which is Bandai in Japanese, which is funny)
Training Grounds
Friendship level x 0 :/
You can see my weapon is a Arakure no Taiken 荒くれの大剣
Taiken means Great Sword. Pretty easy kanji to memorize. Tai/dai means "big" and "ken" is the same kanji as Kamen Rider Blade.
Arakure means ruffian. So it's the ruffian's great sword.
By the way, this might be a good time to learn katakana if you don't know it already. Because it is pretty damn useful:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Katakana#Table_of_katakana
http://jisho.org/
With katakana you can read my armor is the Ashira Helm, Mail, Arm, Fold, and Greave
The thing I wanted to point out is the picture on the right. It's customizable. You can choose your pose and your background. Pretty sweet, huh?

Re: Monster Hunter P3 HD
I picked up a PS3, mainly for playing Tales of Vesperia/Graces/Xillia and 2nd Super Robot Taisen OG when it comes out, so I did get P3 for it . Mainly because I think the reason why I'm not into 3G as much as I was into Tri is the lack of online in the former.
It'll probably take me a while to get to the point where I get online though, I don't have as much time to sink into it as I did when I started Tri.

I don't know why you weren't around when we were looking for people to play Tri.Catastrophe wrote:Mainly because I think the reason why I'm not into 3G as much as I was into Tri is the lack of online in the former.

Re: Monster Hunter P3 HD
Made my character for MH HD today. Got myself two cats, one supporting cat that doesn't attack and other cat that is melee only. Gonna work on earning money to get bomb only cat since that's my favorite type of partner from MHFU and Tri.
Now I am working on Village Quests to see if I can figure out how to get stuff from farm. It looks like one in MHFU I think? One where you get stuff yourself instead of getting cats to get it for you?

Re: Monster Hunter P3 HD
Yeah, it's almost exactly like the FU farm. I don't know how they did it in Tri, but it seems like they threw some of those mechanics out the window in favor of being closer to FU? I don't know if it's a Sony/Nintendo thing. Maybe that stuff is back in Tri G?
When you get a chance, we should meet online and trade hunter cards
Oh yeah, you should prioritize doing spa quests from that cat at the guild counter, since that boosts your hp/mp like the eating did in FU. (From using the spa, not the drinks). The effects have been split off to soda drinks which you can buy from the cat in the spring.

Sure.
Oh that's neat about Hot Spring effects. Is it possible to do quests in group or is it solo missions?

I think it's possible to do them as group quests. They give a lot of supplies which makes me think it's meant for more than one

Re: Monster Hunter P3 HD
So apparently, if you have other people's Guild Cards, they show up in your offline guild randomly and give you things. Neat!
Anyway, I think people would greatly benefit enjoying the game by being able to read a little Japanese. Katakana is super useful, and maybe read this thread where I try to teach it to people?
http://tvnihon.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=148&t=2386
If you have any questions, ask them here.
For now, here's some useful terms for Monster Hunter:
グレート Great
キノコ Kinoko Mushroom
タケ/ダケ Take/dake Suffix that also mean mushroom. (Shittake is one such mushroom))
Also kanji:
Basic stuff:
上 Up
下 Down
以上 More than
This phrase is important because you might see the phrase "you can't carry any more than this". Which is the "you've reached your max" message.
小 Small
中 Medium
大 Big
Materials:
薬 Medicine
薬草 Herb (the second kanji is plant)
玉 Ball/Orb
種 Seed
実 Fruit/berry
石 Stone
鉄 Iron
大地 Earth
結晶 Crystal
骨 Bone
竜 Dragon/Wyvern
竜骨 Wyvern bone
Monster parts:
袋 Literally bag, can be sac too
鱗 Scale
皮 Skin
爪 Claw
頭 Head. Also a counter for animals. That's why you'll see it be like Hunt 10 頭 of this animal, meaning hunt 10 of those animals.
牙 Fang
甲 Shell, carapace

Re: Monster Hunter P3 HD
Double post since the kanji in the first post made it a long post already
Neat stuff I've learned so far:
-When you make equipment for yourself, you get scraps. If you bring the scraps you can make armor and weapons for your cats. You can also have the cat destroy your materials to make scraps, but that's kind of wasteful
-If you have other people's Guild Cards they appear in your offline Guild and give you stuff sometimes
-When you begin, remember to bring a pickaxe and bugnet at all times, since it'll take a while for your farm to produce stuff. Mine as much as you can since you'll need that machalite ore
-For the bug thing, be sure to use the muchuulip (on mh3 wiki it translates it as whip tulip, but that's wrong. It should be something like ecstasy tulip instead) since that's its only purpose. I hear this attracts more bugs than honey does
-Check the traveling merchant's goods often, since he's often cheaper than the merchants in town. Also, be sure to check the top left corner because sometimes he'll have a red banner that says half off:
半額 【はんがく】 (n-adv,n) half, half amount, half fare, (P)

Re: Monster Hunter P3 HD
I just grow it on my farm. I rotate my crops between red seed, green seed, and whatever I'm most lacking of
I also fought Rathian for the first time in the village, came out pretty nicely:

I'll add commentary later

Just a short video to show my cats riding the pig in town. So cute.
I also show how barrel cat works at the end. Basically
Option 1) Put stuff in the barrel to send back to twon
Option 2) Take stuff out of the barrel
Option 3) Send back to town. You can only do this one time per mission.
Whether you choose option 3 or not he'll ask you to confirm or deny when leaving. Just don't accidentally click again once you hit the confirm button since that'll trigger talking to him again (this is if you didn't choose option 3 and he's still there)
I also tried out the list system for combining stuff from the box. How handy! It knows what materials you have available and if you haven't learned a recipe, you can just click the ????? button and you'll try to make it. Hit ?triangle to only display combinations available to you. You can also use the square button to move the recipes around, I guess this will stay true even in a mission?
