Watch me translate Wizard 15

Post by takenoko »

Don't watch if you're afraid of spoilers since Wizard 15 is the episode that aired this week.

Wow, I'm a bit surprised that you translate using SSA instead of Aegisub.

What tools are being used?

He's using SSA for translation, which is quite an outdated subbing program. Aegisub is the main tool being used for fansubbing today.

Love the wallpaper! (^.^)

Believe me, I know how hard translating is as I have attempted it numerous times on many a project. I am in awe of your speed and precision.

I think he prefers it for shortcuts and some of the features

I've obviously never translated before, but from what I've read translating on Aegisub is a hassle. The developers themselves actually say it's not really designed for translating (in the standard way). It can kind of work if the group's subbing style is to post time (i.e.: translate then time the lines to the dialog), but even then it's cumbersome. The problem is that Aegisub can do so much that you end up having to change focus from element to element too often. That's always the impression I've gotten, anyway

Aegisub 3 is a lot better for translating from pretimes, as you can use global shortcuts to easily map things to keyboard buttons (for example, I've mapped Page Down to play a line's audio, then I can type it in, hit enter to confirm it and bring up the next line, Page Down to play the next line, etc.) so you never have to even use the mouse. There's a lot of times where just having the video right there embedded in can help with getting context right too (or just finding humorous screenshots if the first frame of a line happens to land somewhere funny)

I can see how if you're used to SSA you'd want to stick with it, though, but I'm a kid of the Aegisub generation and I can't imagine using anything else (except Notepad if I'm translating for a post-time :V)

Well, I'm pretty sure I translate faster in SSA than you do in Aegisub, so there you go. XD As you can see from the video, I can do it pretty efficiently using keyboard shortcuts and without relying on the mouse except for going to adjust the wav file.

In case you didn't notice, SSA does have its limitations. Like at the end, it wouldn't play the last part of the wav file correctly (Notice the wav form didn't adjust to the playback). I actually use a work around where I trigger the sound to play, but I really have no way of adjusting it from that point without opening it in Aegisub or adding dummy space at the end of the wav file.

Yeah, I like my wallpaper.

I'm pretty impressed...great job as always Takenoko-san.

I have one question...I've watched some episodes of Hibiki and you translated them...How many years have you been here?

PS: Love the wallpaper ^_^

I've been doing pretty much everything else with Aegisub when it comes to fansubbing so I'm fine with using it for translation. Then again, I've only been fansubbing for a little over half a year so I'm a kid of the Aegisub generation like Magenta.
