I download 720p for series, to save hard disk space. It is still an HD but with smaller size. For movies, 1080p.

720p across the board here. It feels like a nice compromise between file size and quality.

Will there ever be 2K and 4K in TV-Nihon Tokusatsu subs?

They'd have to film and release 4k footage first.

I have a 4k monitor so watching anything on it under 1080p is kinda takes half the enjoyment away.

I use to be so staunchly SD. But now I like HD, and upgraded all the episodes I save.

For Blu-ray releases I do full 1080p. However for the weeklies I do 720p, as the image quality isn't there to justify keeping a 1080p release for storage.

On which note, perhaps this is the best time to start up this discussion. What are TV-N's options for getting better quality raws?

With the Zi-O premiere last year, someone pointed out that TV-N's image quality was rather soft compared to some other releases. The difference was noticeable even versus a 720p release.

Meanwhile, the handful of digital stream rips TV-N has done over the past year have generally turned out quite well.

At the risk of speaking of things I know nothing about, perhaps it's time to consider switching to digital stream rips for the next series?

Hello This is the self proclaimed techie of TVN. With the digital stream rips, we use MPeg4 encoder with highest quality for our raw. Now the raw that comes from the weeklies shows are as best quality we can get with the software and equipment that we have. The other option is doing digital stream rips every week for the weeklies and that will actually be a pain because the person who does it has church when it airs. What we could possibly do is look into the final encoding process and possibly increase the quality at that point. With the two pictures that were reference it was final encode that was the problem.

Also as well the recording isn't a true 1920x1080p recording, when we get our raws from tv it's a 1440x1080, so some things may get muddled up in the conversion that way, too. But ultimately we may want to look at that final encode process.

Thanks darkaura. That would be great. Not to look a gift horse in the mouth here, of course, but it definitely seems like there's room for clearer encodes.:)

Digital broadcasts don't have cms though!

Also they don't have the text on the left/right of the screen during the op/ed sponsor screens

If we did a digital raw for the episode, it'd be nice for me since I have to take the episode and edit out all the CM's to make that work raw. We could still do the CM's from the broadcast encode

720, only because I download a LOT of things, and need to conserve space.

It can depend on my mood, but I'll generally download something at 720p if I'm hyped for it or plan to share it with others (otherwise I'll go with SD, especially if I'd like to watch sooner rather than later). I usually watch on my laptop, which only has a height of 768, so even aside from file size, 1080p doesn't make much of a difference on there.
Watching:
Kamen Rider Kuuga, Gotchard

Watched:
KR W, Gaim, Ghost - Build, Geats
Ultraman '66, Leo, Great, Nexus - U7X, Ginga - Blazar
Donbrothers
GS Sho, Dogengers S1-4
When in doubt,
