Maybe it depends on which side of the country you're on. Those of us more toward the East can't use tvnihon.com and those of you out toward the West can get to it?

I live in Georgia and http://www.tvnihon.com has worked fine for me since about a week after the URL started being funky, so I think the people that associated it to different providers were closer.

The problem of not being able to access tvnihon.com domains lies in the DNS server used. The real problem is with the recursive query of any tvnihon.com domain name on ones ISP's DNS server(s). Some DNS servers does not do recursive queries properly while other DNS servers does not do no recursive queries properly. To find out if the DNS server used is having problems with recursive (or no recursive queries), then do the following (Windows only):

Code: Select all

'Start -> Run' and then type 'cmd' (without ' ') and then click on OK
nslookup
set type=a
set recurse
www.tvnihon.com
If one gets a message similar to this "can't find http://www.tvnihon.com: Server failed", then domain either does not exist or the DNS server is having some issues with recursive lookup on the domain. However, a successful recursive answer should give an output similar to this:

Code: Select all

Non-authoritative answer:
Name:    tvnihon.com
Address:  85.17.200.8
Aliases:  www.tvnihon.com
If a recursive query fails, then to the following:

Code: Select all

set norecurse
www.tvnihon.com
The response on a no recursive query can vary from time to time. However it should (normally) be either one of these cases:
  • A list of the root DNS servers
  • A list of the DNS servers responsible for the .com TLD
  • A list of the DNS servers responsible for the .us TLD (since tvnihon.com domains is served by a DNS server in the .us TLD)
  • A list of the DNS servers responsible for tvnihon.com domains.
In order to resolve the domain name to an IP with a no recursive query, then one needs to change the default DNS server to one given in the "Served by:" section of the answer either by name or by IP (which is preferred). Changing server used within nslookup is done as follows:

Code: Select all

server QUERY_SERVER
where QUERY_SERVER is the server one wants to use.

The step above needs to be done until one is using the DNS server responsible for the tvnihon.com domain names is used as the query server. (Authoritative answer is always given by the server in charge for the SOA for the domain in question.)

By default, a recursive query is used by the program/libraries responsible for domain name lookups.

Some examples/technical informations. (All queries is done with the program "dig" on Linux.)

Answer form a DNS server with a successful recursive lookup.
$ dig @208.67.222.222 tvnihon.com

; <<>> DiG 9.3.4 <<>> @208.67.222.222 tvnihon.com

;; WHEN: Wed Jan 9 14:05:05 2008

Answer form a DNS server where a recursive lookup is failing. (Note. The DNS server used is the default DNS server for the computer.)
$ dig tvnihon.com

; <<>> DiG 9.3.4 <<>> tvnihon.com
;; global options: printcmd

Answer form a DNS server with a successful no recursive lookup. Note. The answer can vary. In this example, the DNS server already knows which DNS servers is responsible for the tvnihon.com domain.
$ dig +norecurse tvnihon.com

; <<>> DiG 9.3.4 <<>> +norecurse tvnihon.com

Answer form the DNS server which is responsible for the tvnihon.com SOA and thus is always giving authoritative answer to the query.
$ dig @85.17.200.8 tvnihon.com

; <<>> DiG 9.3.4 <<>> @85.17.200.8 tvnihon.com

;; WHEN: Wed Jan 9 14:12:49 2008
;; MSG SIZE rcvd: 83

As above, but a no recursive query is used instead.
$ dig @85.17.200.8 +norecurse tvnihon.com

Quatrerwin did something that he says will either "make the domain work or make it not work at all" So I guess the latter is what's happening with you.

I think I'm tempted to agree; I find that the claws.us still works while tvhihon.com is having some difficulty staying up. It was working on tvhihon.com a few days ago, then just stopped.

How does it work for everyone now? If it works for everyone, I'll begin phasing out claws.us

Is it just me? Or did all the shows in progress get moved to completed projects, and the section they were in before got completely disabled?

Oh, they still work . But it still irks me that the convenience of smaller sections has disappeared. Meh, I'm just whining now.
