On the other hand, the shortness of the episodes (and the padding) prevents us from getting to know the rangers beyond their typical tropes. It's counter-intuitive but this show could do with a lot more non-porn stuff to get people invested in the characters enough so that if they do start having sex then it would mean more than random JAV people having sex.

That bothered me as well. It would have only cost a couple of extra seconds for Pink to say "follow along" and have them do the henshin dance together (only pink stops before transforming). But, there might have been a skill level gap here between regular super sentai actors and JAV folks trying to copy super sentai.

Along those lines, I haven't looked into the cast, but are all the men porn stars? With the women it's kind of a given. But they don't exactly need to keep most of the dudes around...

Though I was a bit surprised that they went with a 4:1 mix rather than a classic 3:2 mix. I'm sure there are reasons, but that just seems like a missed opportunity to cast another starlet.

I was going to wait another episode before saying anything, but I had a similar observation. Her voice comes off as really nasally - she has a Fran Drescher thing going on - so "annoying" is a good way to put it. I would like to think she's playing it up for the camera; otherwise if that's her natural voice, that would be kind of unfortunate.

Even worse: they made the water ranger Mercury. But Mercury is the driest planet in the system!

Of all of the planets in the solar system, Mercury is the one where you're least likely to find water: it's an iron ball sitting too close to the sun. Technically there may be some water ice there in the shadows at the poles (so I can't say it doesn't have any water period), but this has never been confirmed. So pretty much any planet (or even Jupiter's moons) would have been a better choice.

I hadn't thought about this before, but technically, I think she would be considered the lead for this series. In which case she's going to get the perks that normally go to Reds.

It's a sentai trope that colours are usually numbered in a certain order. Red is pretty much always 1, Blue is almost always 2, green 3, yellow 4, and pink 5. Also, from the preview of the next episode, they're holding to the typical colour=personality trait (ex: red is the passionate one, blue the smart one, etc.).

Most tokusatsu pull this crap. It's pretty much a trope at this point for Riders or Sentai to not be surprised by their first transformation, and usually they do the full gesture routine from the beginning. The generic excuse would be that the transformation device controls their movements. Personally, I miss the days of Kuuga and Agito, where their drivers took over initially and they slowly learned to henshin on their own. That sort of thing (assisted first henshin) contginued in KR through Fourze. But in Super Sentai and Ultraman, they've almost always transformed from the first episode like they've been doing it since diapers.

In Japanese media, Mercury is usually associated with water, more because of mythology than science. The best-known example of this is Mizuno Ami from Sailormoon, whose powers were all water-based.


As someone who actually loves third party sentai, I should make some clarifications (as well as some comments about the ep):

1. These aren't parodies or porn just because an adult company makes them. In fact, third-party toku almost never has nudity or sex. They usually use skimpy clothing to showcase the girls, which are generally either AV actresses or gravure models. The fact that this one will actually get a JAV to go with it is actually rather unusual. Actual sentai porn tends to be made and marketed completely separate from the non-porn sentai, so this is kind of a strange crossover between two subgenres.

2. There have been at least two AV actresses in "official" series: Ozawa Natsuki (Magical Girl Pai Pai) did porn briefly in the early 2000s, and Honoka (Akibaranger) was active in AV around the same time. I won't get into how many gravure models are involved in official TOEI productions, because it feels like there was one from almost every series of SS/KR.

3. Most of these third party shows run on tighter budgets and are meant for direct to video releases. It's unusual to see one airing on YT, so this series really is breaking a lot of standard practices. In fact, I don't even remember a decent third-party sentai debuting on YT since France Five.

4. Costumes and SFX generally get a fair amount of the budget. They have to make multiple copies of most hero costumes because (unlike official toku) the heroes often get beat up pretty bad and the suits are torn or partially destroyed at least once in the series.

5. Visors are almost always slightly transparent to show off the cast, allowing them to do more expression and less arm-waving to show emotion. Personally, I wish TOEI would take a hint, since they're still really stingy on in-helmet shots.

6. Episodes in third party series are usually about 40-50 minutes, but these are often padded by torture scenes (where the baddies are slowly killing a hero until the rest of the team shows up to save them) that last 10 minutes or more, so it's kind of surprising this episode was so short. I guess it's because these eps are meant to just be a lead-in to the JAV instead of an actual series.

7. The cast of third party shows are expected to do their own stunts unless they're dangerous, since most of them have to stay in shape for modelling/sex scenes. This usually includes dance or martial arts, so it's pretty rare for a seasoned performer such as Taki Arisa to need a stunt double, but some of the less seasoned ones tend to underperform in fight scenes (SHoji Yuko actually struggled to do the fight scenes in Akiballion, which was her first series).

8. Unlike big name toku, the third party stuff makes an effort to give the most on a limited budget while also being able to have a little fun with itself (ex: the line about a talking stuffed animal).

9. The theme songs usually have vocals by the lead actress to further showcase her abilities. As a result, these fun little romps actually help the girls get more work, often even in mainstream media. Considering how much exposure these episodes are getting, I wouldn't be surprised if some of the cast go on to do some mainstream stuff in the near future, possibly even official toku.


All in all, I rather enjoyed this ep, but that short 1/4 length runtime really hurt. One thing I did appreciate, though, was that the heroes weren't landing every punch (in fact, it went out of its way to show the mooks ducking and dodging blows sometimes). And the water splashes when the blows actually landed was a nice touch. I wish we could have something like that from TOEI or another first-party toku company.

The costumes were pretty well done, and I honestly can't complain because the TOEI suits from the 1990s were a lot worse (and these shows usually try to mimic the 1990s feel because that's when Power Rangers made Super Sentai a global success, so most adults resonate more with that style). I also love how they spun the typical puppet mascot that was so often taken way too seriously in Super Sentai. The aforementioned line reminded me of ToQGer, so it got a big smile.

I did find it odd at first that Pink was Earth instead of Venus, but somehow it makes sense when you consider Yellow represents the Sun (and yellow's trait is usually strength and traditionally was also the joke/riddle lover of the group, giving them the "sunnier" personality). The plot and Pink's affiliation also kind of gives a subtext of "the Earth is young and beautiful, but Venus is a ruined hellscape which the Earth could become if not protected", which I think is an underused truth.

I like what I've seen thus far, but I'm not sure if it tops out the original Akiballion, which is my all-time favourite third party sentai series. I guess I'll have to wait and see once the whole series is finished (and maybe the JAV, if it actually has some plot).

It doesn't surprise me. There's actually a reason for the costumes being the way they are for the girls:

Tenma Yui (Rajura) is actually a veteran actress who changed agencies (and thus stage name) this year. She was previously Kamikawa Soara. Thus, she has the skimpiest outfit to boost sales under the new name.

Sato Nonoka (Pink Earth) is just starting out as a JAV actress, so far as I know. As such, she's put in the lead role (a female is always the lead in gravure/JAV-casted series, even if she's not technically the leader of the team) and has an outfit that matches the other sentai uniforms.

Akane, AKA Shijima (Varunesia) is retired (at least until now), so she has the least revealing outfit to reflect this and to also hide a little bit of extra padding she's gained.


Incidentally, am I the only one who caught the obvious reference in Varunesia's name to Venus? They say that every planet they've been to is destroyed, and Venus definitely looks like it, so it fits in with the subtext I mentioned in my last post about Earth and Venus... especially when you consider the age difference between the two actresses and the status of their JAV careers.

That was actually intentional. She wasn't trying to lick her hand, she was making a "wiping the drool/cleaning the grease of the last meal from her chin" gesture while licking her lips at the next course. Remember, this is going to culminate in a JAV, so a lot of innuendos are going to have a more mature meaning than the kid-oriented Super Sentai shows. Also, most third-party sentai is made for adult fans of the genre, so they're not afraid to make some references to sexuality, even in the non-porn ones. Personally, I found it quite fitting to marry the two gestures considering the whole point behind Gideath.
