I find the mass hysteria the most frustrating. There is no civility in stores. People are so selfish. The mass-media is all about keep you on edge and encouraging conflict and the spread of fear. What ever happened to sharing serious truthful information with logical questions to clarify any overlooked point? It's all about clicks and advertising dollars. It's been like this for about 10 years now, but it's only gotten worse. If anything, I've decided I need to buy and learn to shoot a firearm.

Wow, hope that you don't end up needing to do that, friend.

Anyway, I walked into work and checked my work e-mail, they've reduced hours for when we're open. But, I'm a full timer so I'm still scheduled. I guess I'll have to work in the background and hope there's stuff for me to do?

That's the issue for a lot of people that don't work in hospitality. A lot of businesses have some kind of work at home contingency in place, but they depend on the fact that the rest of the world is still functioning.

One thing I wish would end with this pandemic I remember would have to be the racism towards Asians because of this damn virus, I hear people are now buying firearms for self defense since I remember hearing people vandelizing property and worse case, attacking Asian Americans for being the "source" of the whole thing

The entire world is shutting down and expecting people to just stay home. My area only has one person who was effected by the virus, and she and her husband were quarantined in Japan over a month until they were allowed to come home.
I get cabin fever and stir crazy easily. I am really starting to get anxiety at the thought of not being able to live and do as I have my whole life. I understand we need to take precautions and how this is going to be detrimental, but why did we allow this to become a thing in the first place?

Over the last 20 years we’ve seen a dozen pandemics, and this is the one that shuts everything down?

It’s almost as if time itself has stopped.

Hey Kouga, good to hear from you, wish it were under better circumstances.

I hope you don't get a bad case of cabin fever. For us, we're allowed to go outside for health reasons, which include exercise and walking the dog. Maybe they make allowances where you are too?

Same here, I work in a public school and the school was closed, children told to stay at home but they still expected the teachers to come in for work because, they might not work if they stayzd at home. You know, like they never work on their lessons, keep in touch with the kids in need of help or do homework correction when they're at home under normal circumstances...Which was incoherent and stupid, because if children are more likely to carry the disease unnoticed, then teachers are more likely to have it, so it's not the wisest thing to have them wander around just to be sure they're working on their worktime (which most of them usually do anyway)

Then, we got into stage 3 confinement and they finally decided that it was best to have us work at home. I've been in touch with most of my kids' parents and worked plenty of time for them to have things to do while they're confined. But I do get the impression that our higher-ups are torn between public health necessities and the utter belief that public servants are all a bunch of overpayed lazy bums.

Sorry, that was just an on the side runt.

I don't understand the rationale behind 'If they work from home, they won't get anything done, so they should keep coming in despite the risk', only to backpedal a few days later.

I was visiting my parents in New Zealand on holiday and can't leave because there aren't any flights to get me back to Switzerland for work. We are about two weeks behind were North America is at the moment. Our government is still bringing in half ass measures and everything is running 'fine'. It just does my head in that they don't look to what is happening overseas and take proactive measures to stamp these things out.

There was a news report last night that schools wouldn't shut at the moment because there is no cause for concern. This morning there have been cases at a high school. Why politicians don't listen to experts drives me insane.

Hey Takenoko!

I scan through the forums every so often. This just happened to be a topic that I stopped to give more time to.

Today was my last day at the office for somewhere between 30-45 days.

I’m baffled and having a hard time with believing what is going on. My fiancé and I went to eat at a local restaurant (while we still can) and the owner thanked us for coming out. The restaurant has a bar too, and you’d think Saint Patrick’s Day would be busy, but it was slow. It’s eerie.

My mind is going wild with this, and I fear this may be the start of worse things to come. A lady at work told me in all her 50 years she’s never seen anything like this. The restaurant owner told me the same. He said a virologist told him that since this doesn’t maim or cripple people, like polio, they don’t get why the reaction of our country and world are this extreme.

Better safe than sorry, but are we going to be sorry for being so “safe”?

We have been in complete lockdown (everything is closed apart from supermarkets) for a few days now and thankfully measures were taken early enough so the situation isn't out of control. There are some cases but some people are hopeful that by the beginning of April the number of new cases per day will start to drop.

The lockdown has created an issue to people who study abroad/happened to be abroad on holiday particularly in countries with a high COVID outbreak. So it's tricky whether these people should be allowed to fly into the country (i.e. exemption to the lockdown) and at what rate or whether letting them return this early is too risky. Another harsh aspect has to do with people who can't visit their very ill loved ones in hospitals (which are in lockdown too).

Here supermarkets and supermarket suppliers report plentiful stocks and nobody has noticed any shortages - although there are thoughts of limiting how many items & limiting upper prices if the situation does eventually go out of control.

I've been keeping myself busy working on some publications of my own work so the time spent inside hasn't been all that bad so far.

The vast discrepancy in the measures taken by some countries troubles me for two reasons: 1) In my opinion the countries not taking strict measures OR taking strict measures too late are making a big mistake 2) how will movement between countries which eventually have no new cases and countries which will battle the virus for the next 6+ months occur? It all just creates a lot of uncertainty particularly if you live abroad/travel often for work/planning on applying for jobs abroad.

Here are some interesting reviews for people who want a bit more information:
Origins, transmission and therapies (figure 1 is a good summary): https://www.dropbox.com/s/ogmk94wot7ddp ... s.pdf?dl=0
Psychological impact of the quarantine: https://www.dropbox.com/s/ogmk94wot7ddp ... s.pdf?dl=0

And a primary paper: https://www.dropbox.com/s/8ue6i3gvk8x6g ... y.pdf?dl=0
from which I will highlight a sentence from the abstract:
The main clinical symptoms of COVID-19 patients were fever (88.5%), cough (68.6%), myalgia or fatigue (35.8%),expectoration (28.2%), dyspnea (21.9%). Minor symptoms include headache or dizziness:(12.1%) diarrhea (4.8%), nausea, and vomiting (3.9%).The results of laboratory results showed that the lymphocytopenia (64.5%),increase of CRP (44.3%), increase of LDH (28.3%), and leukocytopenia (29.4%) were more common. (4)Conclusions:The results of single-arm meta-analysis showed that:the male took a larger percentage in the gender distribution of COVID-19 patients 60%[95%CI(0.54,0.65)], the discharge rate of COVID-19 patients was 42%[95%CI (0.29,0.55)], and the fatality rate was 7%[95%CI (0.04,0.10)].

Please look after yourselves, the situation will improve!

Hey!

I dunno, it's hard to tell what the responsible action is. Currently no one I know is affected, but if someone were, I imagine my feelings on the matter would change a lot?

I'm just thinking of this as a trial run for when a really contagious disease breaks out. Hopefully we can get some infrastructure built in to prepare better for the future.

Till this quarantine passes, I'm going to watch toku, play video games, watch movies, walk my dog, and build legos~

We at least got Skype and other apps to see face to face even if we cannot assemble at the same place together. Even when I was on internship, they had meetings in one room and with Skype app or whatever it is, they connect with another room from the offshore team to discuss everything. You can share files and all that. There is no excuse as to suggest distance does not let you communicate in this era. We are still gathering in one place all together but through online platform.

Here in Puerto Rico we are on curfew. You are only allowed to go out if you are going to work or if you are going to the supermarket, and only one person at a time. If a policeman stops you and you can't justify why you're out, you're immediately arrested. Everything is closed with the exception of hospitals, supermarkets and fast-food joints can only operate via drive-tru or carry-out.
