I always figured it was in the service of not devaluing the main character of the spin off work. If you notice, the first few times they say Saejima Raiga, they pause after the Saejima part. Since they know people are used to it being Saejima Kouga, this adds more emphasis on the Raiga part.
It just avoids unnecessary (and potentially unfair) comparisons to something more nostalgic and liked than the spinoff version.

I agree, it's probably to keep new viewers from being alienated. I mean, it's all well and good to say "Your father, Saejima Kouga." but if Gonza just said "Kouga-sama" then anyone new to the series would be like "who the fuck is Kouga?"
I think Japanese series are a bit nicer about that than American series. If you take a look at Agents of Shield, it's basically impossible to watch without prior knowledge of at least the Avengers and preferably the Marvel universe at large.
