Possible virus from KR W 34-41 HD Batch

Post by mholden020 »

I left my PC on overnight running only uTorrent downloading the episodes 34-41 batch of Kamen RIder W, woke up this morning and found that my antivirus had detected 14 unique viruses and bugs, all had come through the connection opened from the torrent itself.

I'm not pointing the finger at anyone, please don't take this the wrong way at all, things happen. I actually needed to format my PC anyway, this just gives me a valid reason to do so  . Just a warning to everyone who may download it, and if you're seeding these episodes it couldn't hurt to make a quick scan and see if you've got anything gnarly that could find its way around the world.

That's not how torrents work man. All the files are checked for integrity and bad bits are ignored or deleted. There's no way for you to get a complete virus unless it was in the files itself of whoever made the torrent in the first place.

You probably just got the viruses visiting porn sites or something.

The virus reports themselves show the files coming through the torrent itself, and coming through the connection on the torrent program. Maybe your experiences are different, but I've dealt with cases before that have had viruses piggyback (or disguise themselves as) file fragments pulled from a torrent.

I merely said this was a possibility, cool the jets Take, we're all friends here. I agree it could be a number of things, possibly those ads that rotate through the torrent program itself, but each file originated from the torrent program while this was active. Get what I'm saying?

What's your torrent program and what's your antivirus? Cause take's right, that's really not how torrents work. For a virus to piggyback, it's got to be in the original torrent file or in the user's system already. Plus there have been thousands of downloads without this problem, so it's more likely on your end, especially considering we made the files ourselves, so it'd have to be a third party hacker who somehow put a virus into one torrent file for reasons unexplained. Unless there's an exe file in the torrent (which there isn't), there's probably no virus.

In the 20 years I've worked in computing, torrents have always worked in a way that a properly coded bit of malware could latch on to (follow, essentially) any outgoing file, whether it be a transfer (email or something like that) or a torrent. The torrent is more difficult to code because of its nature, but I've seen it done. I'm not saying he's wrong either, but it's not impossible these days.

I've used μTorrent for years with no issues and this is the program the files came through. They arrived, for lack of a better term, in the middle of the night, around 4am, while I was asleep and the download was the only thing running, and this was one of two active torrents, the other being Ninninger 26. There's nothing wrong with the torrent, I'm just saying "Here's what happened, it happened during this, there's a chance it could happen again."

EDIT: Forgot to add that the antivirus was AVG, which is apparently garbage and just let 14 files right through the front door. I had it installed for a week as a temp, but apparently not having it would have been just as effective.

uTorrent is also trash now, especially if you have a recently updated version.
