Japan Is Cracking Down On Illegal Translation Groups

Post by TorchWood »

From Geek.com:

Japan Is Cracking Down On Illegal Translation Groups
If you consume a lot of Japanese culture, namely anime and manga, you probably know a thing or two about fan translations. Without them, a lot of our favorite properties wouldn’t be available for us to consume. Unfortunately, there are several people out there who capitalize on these acts of benevolence that end up harming the very industry fans should be looking to support.

That’s why Japanese police are coming down hard on a supposed underground ring that’s working to translate and post Japanese content on social media for free, which as you can imagine is costing billions of dollars for Japan and the companies that create this media.

It's my observation that fansub groups actually help their industry. Think about it: It provides ways to get media into the hands of people who would never have watched it otherwise, thereby creating a fan base that, in turn, buys media (movies, music, toys, other merch) that all goes to support their machine . . . if anything, they should support fansub groups.

Maybe they're doing the crackdown on licensed stuff? I know there are still groups that translate licensed manga and anime just to get it out there before the licensed stuff is available. The article's very vague with the wording, it doesn't even say if they're translating into English or Chinese (with Chinese translators I would assume Chinese?)

Which is why it is very important that we support legitimate releases in our home markets.
