It's a porn parody, what else is there to say?

Our timer found it amusing that they repeat their roll call twice

If you missed it, join our amazement at the porn parodies that this company makes:

Parody or not, the costume designs are pretty impressive. I would buy these if they made action figures of them.

It seems like they added official English subtitles to the YouTube channel that these are hosted on, so hopefully that can help you guys speed up the process of fansubbing them. Their subtitles aren't great, but they do give viewers a very basic idea of what they are saying in Japanese.

Those suits are amazing. When I first saw the pic posted out of context I assumed they were a really well-done fan design.

The episode itself was...fine. Too short, and I dunno how many episodes it's gonna be. Far more competent than I expected. Although the cinematography during the fight was awful. You couldn't really see what was happening.
Seen:
Super Sentai: Fiveman onwards
Kamen Rider: Ichigou-Skyrider, all the Heisei/Reiwa series except the American shows.
Precure: DokiDoki-Go Pri
Metal Heroes: Gavan
Other: Spiderman, Power Rangers

Wow, you crazy bastards actually did it. I must admit I figured it was only a 50/50 chance you'd actually sub this series. So thank you.

Overall, I feel the first episode of Wakusaver largely lives up to our expectations (given the series' production company). We're definitely watching a B-tier Sentai here; the plot, the sets, and the (non-ranger) costumes all kind of underscore that. So if you can deal with those warts, then you'll probably enjoy the utterly bonkers genesis of this series. Otherwise, it's no replacement for Toei's Super Sentai.

As is typical for first episodes of a toku series, this was a pretty big exposition dump. The compressed runtime didn't do it any favors here - normally there would be more time for exposition - but then again there would also be more fighting, as well. I gather from this episode and the preview for the next that each episode is going to focus on one of the heroes, so it would seem the structure is going to be showing us how they got up to the start of the fight we see in this episode, rather than having some 6 episode story arc that takes us significantly into the future. Unfortunately I think this means red is (atypically) getting the shaft here on development, since his episode is shared with so much basic plot exposition.

I am, however, unsure if this counts as a parody or not. Outside of a few moments, this episode plays things pretty damn straight. I think it would be closer to a homage at this point?

The short runtime is a bummer. I was expecting something closer to a TV-sized episode. Cut away the OP and ED, and it's just 10 minutes of content. If all 6 episodes are like this, then that's only an hour of content in total. Though with that said, their funding model is obviously very different, and it could be that episode 6 ends up being a lot longer since this is fundamentally all one big advertisement to buy the DVD. The advertising angle would also explain why they're so shameless about essentially giving us the roll call twice in a single, half-sized episode: it's padding for time.

On a tangent to that, this may end up a contentious point, but I like the 30fps framerate. 24fps is the standard for drama, so people have been trained that 30fps is for soap operas and thus is inferior. But given that this is an action show, I rather like having a higher framerate. It makes the motion smoother.

Moving on, as mentioned elsewhere, the Wakusaver costumes are quite good. It's not Toei-level (the armbands stand out in particular), but it's definitely up there. Even the helmets are pretty good, which, as I understand it, is the most expensive part to make. If I had to pick nits (and because I can), I'd say that they're not using fully opaque glass like Toei does. But then again I bet it's really nice to be able to see out of those helmets! Otherwise, the nature of this episode means we don't actually get to see them in action, so I hope the next episode delivers on that.

Meanwhile, I'm pleasantly surprised that we got to see an untransformed fight with the actors. I wasn't expecting that, at all. Like the rest of the series, they're not great, but they're not bad either. I doubt any of them have received proper training (like Toei actors do), so credit where credit is due.

The fight cinematography, as HowlingSnail points out, is not very good. The ultra zoomed-in style is difficult to follow. I'm sure it made it a lot easier on the choreography side since it means they don't need a bunch of additional side-fighting going on to fill out the frame. But there's a reason that Toei typically goes "screw logic" and films one hero at a time in a mook fight; it works a lot better in practice.

And just in case anyone forgot who was making this series, pink is wearing a ridiculously short skirt while doing kick attacks. This was entirely expected, but the sheer blatantness of it completely cracked me up. And this is why I'm not entirely sure this isn't a parody, either.

Along those lines, I'm glad we got some face villains as well. I'm sure that was done for production cost (and future content) reasons. But as I freely admit, I'm a sucker for face villains. Even bad ones can emote better than foam-rubber suits!

Ultimately I look forward to seeing how the rest of the series develops. I'm sure it's going to oddball, but I am in fact enjoying it (if only as sport to pick apart and over-analyze ).

PS I've behaved myself very well while writing this up, but I have to get in at least one pun. Wakusavers may be setting us up for a Pyrrhic victory: win or lose, I'm pretty sure Earth is getting screwed here :P

I completely forgot this was pr0n and was wondering about the left general's skimpy outfit.

Not bad, not bad at all.

Not bad, but it could use some polish as a series. Maybe once they get a season under their belt, if they decide to do more anyway. They will try going for longer episodes and work on some proper stunt-work. I think if I graded this on a 1-10 scale it would land at a 6-10 and mostly because of the suits looking interesting even if they aren't up to the Toei level standard yet. Hopefully they can improve that as they go as well.

>Overall, I feel the first episode of Wakusaver largely lives up to our expectations (given the series' producer).

Who's the series producer? I guess I should add it to the wiki, but I tend to only look at directors and writers. It makes you wonder if Toei shows have a producer and what do they do

>Otherwise, it's no replacement for Toei's Super Sentai.

For sure, this feels like someone's homemade sentai series. It's definitely going to need to get graded on a curve

>I am, however, unsure if this counts as a parody or not. Outside of a few moments, this episode plays things pretty damn straight. I think it would be closer to a homage at this point?

Yeah. Besides left commander's outfit, it's not even all that provocative outside some upskirt shots

> If all 6 episodes are like this, then that's only an hour of content in total.

Writing an hour of dialogue is hard work!

I guess it's nice, but it's a little weird. I bumped the hd1080 version's bitrate up to account for the extra frames, but left the hd720 and sd to their normal 2000 and 1000 bitrate. I might bump the 1080 up a bit more if it's not enough

Yeah, the fighting is surprisingly plentiful

Yeah, the villains looked good

Sorry, I probably should have written "production company". I was looking for a more sophisticated way to write "it was made by a porn company". :P

Are we going to do a poll, BTW?

That's what the action scenes are for. Then your dialog is just grunts, moans, and hi-yahs!

It seems sufficient. Though if you wanted to do things "by the book", 25% more frames would require 25% more bits, or going to about ~3800k.

Are you also restricted by subbing Ultraman because Trigger could use some decent subbing.

Suits look nice and some of the special effects are better than what I was expecting. Everything else is a bit meh but given the runtime it'll be fine.
