#TV-Nihon's 19th birthday

Post by takenoko »

Today #TV-Nihon turns 19. It's a bit of a bittersweet celebration considering that we're no longer working on the shows that made this site famous in the first place. But we've been working on GIGA toku and the jdorama Komi Can't Communicate. I subbed a few commercials in my free time too. So hopefully people are still enjoying the stuff that we are putting out. Thank you to everyone, both staff and fans, who are still sticking around with us today.

There's a translator's day?

I think we can all agree that I receive too much credit as the faceman for the group. From timers who make sure the captions don't fly by so quickly that your eyes bleed, to editors and qcers who offer corrections, suggestions, and everything inbetween to make the final product as good as it can be. Fansubbing is a collaborative effort and there are too many people who don't get the acknowledgement and credit that they deserve. If the subs were just the translations are I wrote them out in my first draft, the quality would be a whole lot poorer for it

Looks like we lost about half our audience after the Toei thing. I guess that's to be expected

Hey, happy birthday guys! And thank you for all of the content; I am indeed certainly enjoying it.:)

Another couple of years, and we can take the site out drinking. :P

It's wise to be humble. But at the same time don't undersell yourself. If translating was easy, every yahoo would be doing it. Instead, the fact that TV-N has such a great team - from translators to timers - is precisely because it's so hard that it takes a team of people doing their best to make a high quality finished product.

That's what I would have expected as well. If not perhaps a bit more. Not having a year-round weekly sub removes the driver for a good bit of recurring traffic.

Yeah. And having a weekly is nice in that it's good to have a routine to plan your life around. Even though there wasn't a hard schedule, there was always a soft schedule with a weekly. We had a week to release it or it'd start piling up.

It's a little harder to work on a project that doesn't have that soft deadline because that time constraint isn't forcing me to go "Better do it now or people will be disappointed". I guess it's nice that GIGA is kind of filling in that weekly gap. And we still do the commercials in case people like those

Adding onto takenoko's previous post, fansubbing really is the collective effort of the entire group. I personally dislike timing things myself unless I absolutely have to, so having other people willing to do that is a huuuuuge weight off my shoulders. The effects/karaoke people make each episode just *pop* and I can't even begin to count the number of times there's been a suggestion in qc where I'm like "oh yeah that's a good point" or "yes! that's the word/phrase that fits best here!" QC in particular brings in the combined knowledge/experience of a ton of different people from different walks of life, so it's especially helpful if there's some sort of obscure knowledge, non-English/Japanese dialogue, or just straight up "hey you translated this differently 10 episodes ago".

All fansubbing work is a labor of love and translating is only a part of the huge amount of work that goes into it. I'm incredibly grateful to all of TV-N staff, past and present, who put in so much time and effort to putting out the best work we could.

There's definitely moments of writer's block when translating too. When you're writing several hundred sentences per episode, you might not be finding the best phrasing for each of those lines. More lines = more fatigue

Having someone look at it later with fresh eyes can really help you find the phrase you're looking for / find a sentence that's perfect like Luna said that you hadn't even thought of. When QC does this, I'm really appreciative of that

A delayed Happy 19th Birthday to TV-NIHON!! I just saw this, so I apologize for the delay. As always, thanks for all the effort you guys put into your work and all those releases. It's such a pity that you can't do the weekly Super Hero Time, but there's still the other stuff and I'm glad to have a group where I can come to every week and discuss my favorite stuff with. Hopefully other people will find more reasons to stick around in the near future.

I honestly do hope you guys reach your goals but to be honest it's kinda hard to stick around without having the access to watching rider or sentai, and I understand your guys concern and how some of you disliked working on it I really wish you guys could finish saber and zenkaiger
