Not only does he shoot him, he takes the body afterward? Bad luck for sentai maniac #5343

Is the queen Garyuudo's mecha? They both have X's

Is that a white Tegasword?

My hobby is getting high off flowers

These brothers really didn't have strong feelings about their parents, did they?

Haha, Shoei Studios. Did these brothers get the same genes? Why is one a CEO and the other eating clovers and jobless?

Is this guy really Hoeru's brother or does he just have information about Hoeru's brother. This is making me feel like FireCandle is Hoeru's real brother

Can one person really eat that much sushi on their own

Kinjiru has a Captain America list

I feel like this is the first time in 8 episodes that I've seen Ryuugi be serious and not just the butt of a joke

I like FireCandle's monkey king staff

What was that sound effect from Kuon stretching? Is his bones made of bread sticks?

Garyuudo looks cool at least

Looks like Bouquet finally did her job

Why does the extra ranger always get to summon nostalgia clones lol

I wonder which of the Tegaswords is easiest to move around in. Red maybe?

Tegasword Red, humiliation

What? Why'd Garyuudo run away, he was winning

Oh, that was a pretty good episode of Gozyuger. Maybe things are picking up. Or maybe I'm just basking in the light of the strong ending cliffhanger

Wait, what does Kuon do with the bodies of his victims???

Haven’t seen more than one clip from the episode yet, but from that clip and the BandaiMania toy review of TegaJune (linked here https://youtu.be/Ji7sx--BmyM?si=5TekRQuVs4LJKD4E), while Yukana voices the activation and Mecha sounds, as announced previously, the transformation and summoning voice seems to be someone else.

They seem to be using this guy as our Basco, having his scoop up Rings off-screen so they don't have to dedicate an episode to the people using Gosei Red and Akaninger.

Prediction: Queen Tega June is Tohno's mum, and Tega Sword is his dad.
Seen:
Super Sentai: Fiveman onwards
Kamen Rider: Ichigou-Skyrider, all the Heisei/Reiwa series except the American shows.
Precure: DokiDoki-Go Pri
Metal Heroes: Gavan

Going over the lines last night, I really do like Kuon's lines. It's not perfect, but it puts him in a tier above the other villains at this point, and I do like FIreCandle and Bouquet. Maybe there's hope for this series after all!

First serious episode.

So Hoeru's catchphase "You are my prey." is actually from his brother.

Circle and Cross. Right and wrong. Hero and villain. Nice use of motif here.

Green with his old-man wisdom. Yes, in the end, memories are all that a person could leave behind. He really is the only character with any depth so far. Though Hoeru is getting more flashed out here, being a kid who looked up to and wanted to become as good as his big brother.

They finally let Fire Candle out of the basement and stopped getting side-lined. He's the most interesting character to watch.

Man, the stairs outside the stadium is windy.

💍 Queen Tegajun finally appears
Last week, the character Tegajun, the Queen of Bridan, was finally announced. She will be played by Yukana-san once again!

It seems she has finally awakened with the return of the Ring Hunter Garuudo. It has become clear that the Queen's goal is to collect the Sentai Rings and to find a groom. This means that the Queen wishes to get married!

💍 Reunion with Hoeru's brother Kuon

...But before that...

Kinjiro has moved into the room next to Hoeru's! (I wonder where he's been living up until now...) By the way, when you go up the stairs in Tegasword Village, the door on the right leads to Hoeru's room.

Image Image

His missing older brother, Kuon, appeared before Hoeru. The role is played by Karuma-san, who is well known for playing the "mysterious man"! The catchphrase and pose that Kuon used to prove that he is the brother, is "You are my prey." It turns out that it was originally Kuon's catchphrase, and that Hoeru is imitating it.

Hoeru is a circle (O) and Kuon is a cross (X). This contrast continues into the future...

Image

By the way, as mentioned in an interview article, Fuyuno-kun (Hoeru) is a big fan of Karuma-san. Not only has he watched his YouTube videos, but he apparently even owns one of Karma-san's published books, so Fuyuno-kun seemed quite nervous during the filming.

Here's the inside story about the origin of the name "Kuon" from screenwriter Inoue. His real name, 久光(pronounced as Hisamitsu ひさみつ), means "a character who lost himself a long time ago". The name 久遠 (pronounced as Kuon くおん)is taken from this meaning. Also 久遠 (Kuon) also contains the kanji 遠 (To) from 遠野 (Tono). So after losing himself as "Hisamitsu", the man was given the name "Kuon".

Image

💍 The brother's true identity
As the president of an AI company, Kuon visits a studio to shoot a promotional video introducing his company. The name of the film studio where this is took place was not Toei, but 掌映 (Shoei). The kanji 掌 (Sho) also means palm, the same as Gozyger's logo! The attention to detail of the art and props staff is just amazing! The promotional video is also so realistic it looks like it could be shown on the advertising tablets you often see in taxis... (lol) A truly impressive performance from Director Kato.

Image

Hoeru admired his older brother and wanted to be just like him. His response to Tegasword's request to become number one may have been due to his memories and feelings of his older brother.

Did you enjoy the dialogue between Hoeruu and Kuon? The script was two and a half pages long! Kuon's lines, which shatter Hoeru's admiration, memories, and feelings for his brother, are truly impressive, as expected from a script by Akiko Inoue! He was eating sushi happily, but then he was pushed down into a pit right after... Confused by his brother's words and absolute power, Hou bares his fangs at the Gozyugers.

By the way, this scene took place in the middle of winter, on a cold and extremely windy day. Both Karma-san and Fuyuno-san were exposed to the intense wind while acting...! Of course, it was also a tough filming environment for the makeup artists, costumers, and filming staff, as the wind would mess up the actors' hair and costumes no matter how many times they fixed them. Furthermore, because of the wind noise, we couldn't use the sound on set, so the dialogue scene between the two was actually recorded at a later date! It's quite difficult for the actors to create the emotions they had at the time and record it at a later date in a completely different environment, but both of them performed very well!

Image

If we call the Gozyuger warriors 〇, then Garyuudo in contrast, is an ✕ warrior. His transformation pose is calm to highlight his ruthlessness, but the key is the hand movements like loading a gun and the final slash! He's overwhelmingly strong! Kuon uses the Universe Rings not to transform, but to summon a warrior as a physical entity.

Image

💍 Guests
Now, let's introduce our guest! The person who plays Kuon's secretary is Yui Karen-san!

Image

The scene where Kuon delivered punishment to the the employee is illuminated with a red light was thrilling. The person who delivered that amazing scream-inducing performance was Wakabayashi Hidetoshi-san!

Man, there's the bones of a really interesting story here, but pacing is so insane and all over the place that it's hard to be invested in any part of it.

- GozyuRed heel turning on the rest of the group to be with his cool older brother he admires is interesting! we don't really have evil/antagonistic reds that aren't sixth rangers and the second red of their team. Too bad that comes and goes in the space of one episode. (also all the characterisation of his dynamic with his brother came here too, foreshadowing? don't know her)
- GozyuRed being in a fight with his fated rival and not being at his best and the rival walking away being disappointed in him feels like something that should happen after at LEAST several episodes or something rather than as a throw away scene amongst 18 other things happening in this episode.
- GozyuRed being downbeaten by all the misery during his heel turn and renouncing his powers? would be super interesting if that heel turn hadn't lasted less than 7 minutes.

So while on the pacing thing, I knew we wouldn't have enough time to have EVERY ring get focus episodes or whatever, fair enough, but holy shit the amount of off-screen powers we are blitzing through. Jetman, Boukenger, Ryusoulger, Ninninger, Abaranger, Kyoryuger, JAKQ & Goseiger rings are relegated to "oh yeah, this unnamed faceless jobber got squashed in a flashback, here's the ring" or not even that much and we're only 8 episodes deep. Which is kinda crazy since this season isn't even DOING cameo appearances from previous sentai actors, it's just Guest of the week or whatever. They COULD have done something with these rings but just didn't. Like sure Ninninger, Ryusoulger, JAKQ & Goseiger aren't really popular shows and we already did Kyoryuger nostalgia 2 seasons ago, but surely Jetman, Boukenger & Abaranger could have had SOMETHING? we literally have had more of the rings be off-screen acquisitions than on-screen ones. It's a shame that Donbrothers the not-really-anniversary season already did a "the MOTW is based on previous season, beat monster, get season's power" gimmick 3 seasons ago cause that would certainly help the pacing of these powers being thrown around here...

P.S. If I had a nickel for every time a dude with a gun transformation trinket in an anniversary series summoned previous fighters with it... I'd have 4.

Yukana also did voiced Mezool in Kamen Rider OOO.

I noticed at least the previous episode that the Bridans are using perfect circles as their teleportation portals. Even Kuon used a perfect circle to go to the Bridan Castle even though he has a X motif. Also Kuon's voice reminded me of Ouja so much.

I wonder if Kuon uses the bodies of the fallen to make the bell minions?

I think that red has found the way not to lose in any Sentai fight: pretend you don't care and walk away.

Will we have a crossover episode next week were Red discovers that his wish is to guzzle candy?

Will FireCandle eventually get defeated and start running a food stand?

Will there be a separate mega-mega-zord that has the spirits of all the female sentai?

Why doesn't one of the Gozyegers make a point to find Lupin Red's ring so they can steal the rest of the rings?

This episode was definitely better than the last 2, though not by much. Like others have stated, the framework of a great series is right there, but it's bogged down by so many poor writing choices and pacing issues.

I hate having to compare this season to Gokaiger so often, but it really can't be helped (especially since we've now got our new Basco/Diend character with ties to the main character's backstory). Gokai handled so many of these aspects significantly better than how Gozyu is doing it, and it's truly tragic. While they didn't have a dedicated tribute episode for all 34 past Sentai (and I wasn't expecting Gozyu to do it with all 49), they at least managed to pay homage to all of them in some way. Hell, even Decade, for as much as that series struggled, managed to acknowledge each of the previous Heisei series (the less said about the second half, the better). It just feels like so much wasted potential overall.

ETA: Also, what happened to not-Taiya? The first 2 episodes made it seem like he was going to be important to Hoeru's story, yet he's been MIA since then. Is his actor busy or something? Why bring him back, if you're not going to actually use him in the main plot?

Finally, a serious episode. Not that I don't like my Sentai goofy at times (here's looking at you, Go-Onger), but Gozyuger has been pretty light so far. And as a result, much like Hoeru, we haven't had much meat to chew on. So this episode has given me some fresh hope for the series after waning in the last few episodes.

The brother dynamic is incredibly interesting. It does feel like it's come out of nowhere in some ways - big bro is back, but we'll forget talking about how he survived 10 years in bridal hell and immediately move on to the bonding - but the scenes work well. For smashing all of this into a single episode, it sells me on these two characters being brothers, which is not an easy thing to do. Whether they'll do enough with it remains to be seen, but the setup is there.

Kuon is obviously up to multiple levels of misdeeds. Besides shooting people in the back to steal their rings, there's exactly no chance in hell his business operation isn't up to something crooked as well. Someone was already throwing around the subject of (generative) AI with the No-Ones, and now we have the big bad's right-hand man running an AI business. So it looks like whoever suggested AI as a theme for this season was on the right track.

This episode does kind of drop the ball with the resolution of Professor Sentai getting shot in the back last week, though. Obviously the writers are going to toy with it a bit longer, but after the shock (and Kuon making off with the body), that's about as much as the attack gets addressed. One OP later, and no one seems particularly bothered about a brand new enemy kidnapping a guy. It makes a powerful scene feel a bit hollower in retrospect.

After seeing the suit in action this week, I still think Garyuudo looks like he's a Kamen Rider reject. He's too armored to be a Sentai hero, and the literal gun on his helmet is a bit too on the nose (or rather forehead). That said, I will grant that even the heroes this season are a bit more armored than usual, so it's not entirely outside of the show's general trends.

I'm not sure what to make of his fighting style at this point. Gun guys don't lend themselves to exciting stunt choreography as much as sword guys do, so he's starting from a disadvantage here. Whereas Fire Candle is having a blast with his staff. Also, the gun cocking sounds when he's transforming are just hilarious for all the wrong reasons. Cocking a gun is a physical action - one the toy obviously lacks. So while I get that it's supposed to be thematic (it's not like the Gozyuger's are smacking an actual tambourine while transforming), it's silly to the point of being immersion breaking. This is only slightly elevated from a kid making gun cocking sounds with his mouth while playing.

I did the use of a piano in his transformation jingle, though. It's a very elegant sound, a word that I would not normally ascribe to Super Sentai. I suppose this is because the big bad he's working for is a queen, which provides some contrast to the more electric sound of the Gozyugers, but either way it works. It's a deceptive sound for a very powerful villain.

And speaking of villains, the queen is awake! Kudos to whoever called the idea several episodes back that she and TegaSword were somehow related. With a name like TegaJune, this all but confirms that they're related in some fashion. Though whether TegaSword is the groom she's seeking - which seems to be the obvious connection - remains to be seen. If I were betting, I'm thinking it's a bit of a early-series red herring. So perhaps they're siblings or such (which would parallel nicely with this episode).

I had also been wondering about the etymology of her name, but I checked the TV-N wiki and I see someone already decoded it. "TegaJune parallels with Tegasword with Ju being the Japanese word for "gun". June might be from the phrase a "June bride", continuing the bridal motif of the Bridans.". So it's basically TegaSword and TegaGun. Fitting.

Given the Red focus in this episode, the other characters really don't get much to do. In fact, we don't see Black or Blue's actors at all, which even coming directly after a focus episode for the two, is a bit weird. On the other hand, I liked the small interaction between Kinjirou and Ryuugi musing on if they're really enemies, and if they can't be cordial to each other right now. The reality of the series, of course, is that it's about a team (it's literally in the name), so the "will they fight" stuff is kind of silly. But I like the depth that comes with Kinjirou being a bit wiser than most, and Ryuugi having the sense to stop and think about it.

Also, I am officially opening a missing persons counter for Hoeru's landlady, Saori. She's a character that gets into the OP but has been missing for 6 episodes now. It's getting conspicuous enough that it's hard to shake the feeling that something may be amiss behind the scenes.

Finally, while this episode did a lot of things right, there is one thing that bugs me about the plot: how quickly Hoeru folds and attacks his teammates. Admittedly, this is informed by Sentai tropes - which last week's episode was all about illustrating - but Red tends to be the strongest willed member of the team. It's often for that reason that he's the leader, but even when that's not explicitly the case (Zenkaiger, early King-Ohger), he's still normally the strongest willed. And indeed, that's how Hoeru has been painted thus far in this series. Even if he doesn't have a wish, he has a strong sense of what it means (and why he's needed) to be a savior.

So for Kuon to break his will in this fashion comes off as out of place. To be sure, it was a damn good put-down talk (man, now that's a weird thing to write). But unless he has mind control powers, I'm having a hard time buying that Hoeru would forsake everything and immediately go after his teammates, especially when Flame Candle (who has hurt people before) is right there. With that said, I can totally buy Hoeru quitting after that talk and his de facto loss to Flame Candle, so that much aligns with the rest of the episode. But having him attack the rest of the team - and as a berserker, at that - is a step too far.

Plot matters aside, the choreography was great in this episode. The ground fight is well executed, with Flame Candle's actor putting in the work to sell the idea that he's holding his ground against these superheroes. And similarly, the rest of the team gets a pretty good beatdown from Gary. We finally got a more complex mecha fight again; and while it wasn't especially long, that was a lot of fire. Fire they let get surprisingly close to that TegaSword suit! :D

Next week's preview can f-off, though. It's incredibly spoilerific, showing us how the mecha fight ends and Hoeru's come-to-TegaSword moment. In fact, the preview for this episode was equally as bad, all but telling us in advance that the brother was Garyuudo. Granted, it was kind of obvious from the get-go-, but it left very little for the audience to organically learn by watching this episode.

Translation question: At 06:55, did Hoeru really say "the parents"? In English, that could be either an error (our parents, mom & dad, etc), or an incredibly cutting line of dialog. And I'm not such which it is.
takenoko wrote: Sat Apr 12, 2025 9:51 pm Is the queen Garyuudo's mecha? They both have X's
Ooh, I hadn't considered that. Though in hindsight it should be obvious. Given that she's the big bad, that could have some really interesting repercussions. Either Gary will take far, far longer to join the team than most sixth rangers. Or she's going to be replaced as the big bad very shortly.

Yes.
I feel like this is the first time in 8 episodes that I've seen Ryuugi be serious and not just the butt of a joke
That's because it was the first time where he wasn't the butt of a joke. Episode 2 was the last time he had something serious to do. Everything else since then has been nonsense. It's a nice change for the series' least developed character.

Last week I credited this series for working so hard to not be Gokaiger. However, I feel like I need to retroactively retract half of that statement after seeing Gary summon enemy rangers. I won't argue that it's not cool, but Gokaiger did it so well that in an anniversary season it's just so derivative... :(
Yaiba wrote: Sun Apr 13, 2025 10:16 am Circle and Cross. Right and wrong. Hero and villain. Nice use of motif here.
D'oh! I'm not sure how I missed that on my first watch through. It's so obvious...

Though wouldn't cross be right and circle be wrong? If I've only learned one thing from my PS5, it's that cross is for forward navigation and circle for backwards navigation. So that makes Gary and GozyuWolf the progressive and regressive elements respectively.
Man, the stairs outside the stadium is windy.
Aye. I noticed they had to fully ADR parts of that scene. So it must have been quite bad if they couldn't use a boom mic.

Hmm. This is a really good point. For as much as I enjoyed the giant robot fight between the two, I can't argue that this episode wasn't overstuffed with plot threads. That interaction with Flame Candle alone would have been enough to be the A-plot in most Sentai series. But it has to fight with the evil ranger for screen time. It does a bit of a disservice to that element of the plot, I suppose.
P.S. If I had a nickel for every time a dude with a gun transformation trinket in an anniversary series summoned previous fighters with it... I'd have 4.
4? Besides Gokaiger and Zenkaiger, what am I failing to count?

Is his actor busy or something? Why bring him back, if you're not going to actually use him in the main plot?
He'll be back. I get the impression that he's meant to be a longer-term rival. He's someone Hoeru will face later as a demonstration of how he's grown.

It's not a reference to Play Station. "Circle" and "Cross" in Japan is equivalent to "Tick" and "Cross" in the Western world.

Japanese kids are familiar with these symbols because it's how homework are marked.

Translation question: At 06:55, did Hoeru really say "the parents"? In English, that could be either an error (our parents, mom & dad, etc), or an incredibly cutting line of dialog. And I'm not such which it is.
I think it's okay? When I'm talking to my siblings we all refer to them as "the parents" because it's annoying to say "mom and dad" all the time. I tried googling around to see how common a phrasing this is but I keep getting AI slop so I guess I'll never know.

Weeeeeeeell no, homework is marked with a circle or a checkmark, which is INCREDIBLY CONFUSING to me because check mark means okay and circle means look over here, right? Nope, circle means it's correct, check mark means check here.

Circle means on/yes and x means off/no for a lot of things though.

>Finally, a serious episode. Not that I don't like my Sentai goofy at times (here's looking at you, Go-Onger),

I've been rewatching Go-On recently and it's pretty amazing how much characterization they pack very quickly. It's obviously not the deepest stuff, but it's character beats taht make them instantly more charismatic and likeable than the Gozyugers 8 episodes in

> It makes a powerful scene feel a bit hollower in retrospect.

for real

>I had also been wondering about the etymology of her name, but I checked the TV-N wiki and I see someone already decoded it. "TegaJune parallels with Tegasword with Ju being the Japanese word for "gun". June might be from the phrase a "June bride", continuing the bridal motif of the Bridans.". So it's basically TegaSword and TegaGun. Fitting.

Your two flavors, sword and gun

>But I like the depth that comes with Kinjirou being a bit wiser than most, and Ryuugi having the sense to stop and think about it.

Yeah, it's a little oasis of characterization in a "wtf is your deal besides liking Tegasword, being an idol, or being the worst detective"

>Also, I am officially opening a missing persons counter for Hoeru's landlady, Saori. She's a character that gets into the OP but has been missing for 6 episodes

Oh yeah, like why bother having her if she's not there to mentor Hoeru. We see more of her son than her

>But unless he has mind control powers, I'm having a hard time buying that Hoeru would forsake everything and immediately go after his teammates,

I think it works. If we think of Hoeru as a completely vulnerable person, he's got no friends or work or anything else going in his life. It makes sense that Kuon with his cult leaderlike qualities can easily go "hey, if you come with me you can eat expensive sushi and have family in your life". Again, I love it when a story has actual temptation because Hoeru is getting jack all from his team mates

>Translation question: At 06:55, did Hoeru really say "the parents"? In English, that could be either an error (our parents, mom & dad, etc), or an incredibly cutting line of dialog. And I'm not such which it is.

Considering these guys aren't willing to speak to their parents, it made sense to me for them to refer to them as coldly as possible. It's not even "my" or "your" parents because that relationship has been severed

>What's the punishment for possession of weed in Japan, anyhow?

It's ridiculously harsh. It comes up a lot since actors are always hit with the anti-weed stick and it seems career ruinous
Can one person really eat that much sushi on their own
Yes.

impressive

>That's because it was the first time where he wasn't the butt of a joke. Episode 2 was the last time he had something serious to do. Everything else since then has been nonsense. It's a nice change for the series' least developed character.

How long ago has it been since "Ryuugi has a thing with his dad" and then no mention of it again lol

>Though wouldn't cross be right and circle be wrong? If I've only learned one thing from my PS5, it's that cross is for forward navigation and circle for backwards navigation. So that makes Gary and GozyuWolf the progressive and regressive elements respectively.

not a mgs fan? in Japan the circle means right and the X means wrong/cancel

Diend and Zi-O?

Also it'd be seriously messed up if the last year's red were constantly showing up in a show where he's not the main character. I get they did it for DOnBrothers because he was basically with muppets for a year, but let's treat the easter egg for the thing that it is. I'm sujre Toei's saving all their nickels for some big nostalgia bait episode as the mid season climax

There’s also the fact the Boonboomger cast are on a live tour until mid-June. And with these episodes taking 6 weeks to make, we’ll probably see him back episode 22 at the earliest.
