How to seed a torrent

Post by takenoko »

Just point a torrent at a completed file or folder of files and bam, you're seeding. This let's you give back to the torrent and help out your fellow fans.

Outdated info:
I also recommend signing up to the tracker just so the staff can get some statistics of the people who use our site. We won't ban anyone for being a leecher, but would like to encourage people to give back and try to have a decent ratio if they have the bandwidth.

I've tried seeding lately and for whatever reason it doesn't connect to peers. However, when it does connect to a peer(s) the seeding speed isn't very high and I leave the computer on overnight.

Do you think AVG version 8 has blocked out the seeding process to operate normally?

Seeding speeds in general will be much slower than leeching speeds. This is especially noticable on high speed connections such as DSL or Cable. Since when you web surf you are downloading for more than uploading (even with something as simple as fetching a web page - you "upload" a little data that says "Give me this page" and then you download the page, pictures and other embedded content), most providers have it set up where the upload speeds are a fraction of what you could get when you download and unless you're running a server you'll never notice.

On my connection during my optimal times, I can clear about 110 KB/s download but my maximum upload speed tends to max out closer to 35 KB/s. Even then, torrentwise, it functions better at 25 KB/s upload since if my upload speed is too high, it takes longer to send out the download requests (and the download speed then drops, not to mention it does have an impact on anything else I might be trying to do).

And further, it goes without saying that time of day does impact things. If I tried to download something during the middle of the day, I might get about 30 KB/s tops compared to the middle at night when I can push over 100. But in general, there's little you can do about the relative slowness of your "upload". Just have to wait it out.

See if that's relevant. You really need to foward whatever ports you configured in bittorrent. If you don't have a router and your modem connects directly to your computer, then your ISP is probably interfering.

Firewall blockage, NAT'ing error, IP blocking software

have you allowed your client access through the firewall?
if using a router have you set up port forwarding as this helps greatly?
are you using peer guradian?
Which client are you using and have you set it up right?

there are so many reasons why you may get a 404 error

What do you mean by seeding?
Does it means by just downloading the torrents? Or is there something else other than downloading it?

Seeding is once you have downloaded it, you leave it to upload an equal amount of what you downloaded, sometimes more

The analogy is taken from plants. You sow your seeds, and from that plants grow.

By the same token, seeding a torrent usually means taking a completed file and letting the tracker access it. The tracker will then take your completed file and use it as a seed for spreading the data to other people who want it.

Basically opening a torrent and pointing it at a completed file is all that's needed to seed a torrent. It won't override it, since the torrent knows how complete your file is and whether or not its corrupt or not using hashes. Or you can just let a completed torrent stay on, thus sharing your file with other people, this is another way of seeding a torrent

No. When you upload the video to youtube or veoh, it reencodes the file, usually lowering the quality. It's completely different from seeding a torrent

Seeding the file is more like sharing the file over the torrents. It lets people who have our files make it available for other people over our torrent tracker. Which is vital, since no seeds means no one can get the files from our torrent.
