So as much as I am trying to defend Toqger for it's merits i.e. good character relationships, good character history I'm starting to notice that the writing is becoming a little bland. Honestly for me the stuff with the villians is probably more interesting than the heroes themselves which is why I am wondering if the series needs an Urobuchi-style of writing to refresh the same storytelling that we have so far

I think it's fine. Sometimes Kobayashi writes a Go-Busters, sometimes she writes a Toqger. Sometimes it's good enough for a series to be amusing. It'd be pretty unrealistic to expect a Gokaiger every year, for example. They all can't be winners.

In the case of Super Sentai and Kamen Rider, the toys will be more important than the story itself. For Go-Busters, the story was great but it deviated too much since the toys couldn't sell that well and the traditional Super Sentai fan wasn't liking the direction that Go-Busters went in.

What direction was Go-Busters heading in? I thought the plot was fine until they blew up Messiah lolPhoenix512 wrote:In the case of Super Sentai and Kamen Rider, the toys will be more important than the story itself. The show got retooled after that. Shows how bad it was doing.

I'm not wanting a Gokaiger every year. What I want is something fresh or at least have what Gaim has and that is a real sense of what actions and repercussions have as a Toku hero basically a more grounded sense of realism.takenoko wrote:I think it's fine. Go-Busters was trying to do that and people weren't biting. So I doubt they will try to do something bold in the next few years.

Hmmm, I kind of feel like Toqger has that though.CaptainTalon449 wrote:I'm not wanting a Gokaiger every year. What I want is something fresh or at least have what Gaim has and that is a real sense of what actions and repercussions have as a Toku hero basically a more grounded sense of realism.

It seems to me that Sentai is so dependent on its strict formula these days that it would be difficult (with producers and possibly with fans) to significantly change it up. For example, a sentai without a monster-of-the-week in most episodes suddenly doesn't feel quite like sentai anymore.
