Oh, I'm 10 minutes in and haven't written a comment. I just wanted to say that Suzume's uniform is an interesting blend of a schoolgirl outfit and ?medieval Japanese clothing

But yeah, neat to gets Kaguragi's backstory here. I honestly kind of forgot that he got his seat of power by overthrowing the old ruler. With his whole schitick being betraying people, you'd think it'd come up more. I mean, you're ripping off Game of Thrones, Jaimie's nickname was Kingslayer

Interesting to have Rita almost confront Grody only for the ninja to almost be in play (that guy really hasn't been an active agent since his own episode)

Oh I figured it out, there is no rice

Oh right. We're visiting some missing aspects of God's Wraith. Hmmm.. Kind of wish this were set up better, but at least looking back on it in hindsight I can kind of see how things fit together

And now we have Grody's monster form

What? He still didn't kill her even though he said he would? I guess she's not on fire this time...

Gotta love Himeno's big grin on the world map update each week. It was fine for her country's ending, but seems a bit silly now with Kaguragi's solemn potrait on the other side

Okay wow, best Kaguragi episode yet. As one note as his character is, that one note of being the constant traitor is used to great effect in this episode and this series. It's kind of sad that he gets so little screen time and is so backgrounded, since he's clearly the most interesting of the male Ohgers. Like give me more great Kaguragi episodes like this

And his sister is funny too. I think she might be the schemer behind the schemer. A lot of the stuff that happens in the God's Wrath era wouldn't have gone down without Suzume's pushing things forward and talking up her brother. I mean the guy's basically in shock when he comes out of the castle

Between last week and this, King's been on an upswing lately. Nice!

Nice Kaguragi episode. This episode didn't need any fighting, or anyone else for that matter. Just having the two rulers discussing the events from that fateful day was enough. Their discussion slowly revealed the publicly known version of Kaguragi usurping the throne, to the logical reason of Iorki committing suicide to save herself from the riot, to the actual reason of Iroki trying to hide the rice poisoned by Grody, was intriguing.

Grody thought Iorki was a tyrant so he brought her back, but inadvertently gave a chance for Kaguragi and Iroki to talk stuff out and had closure. It was a really convoluted way to deal with that threat and passed on the throne, but like every kingdom had its own theme, the theme of Tofu was being deceitful. Iroki was so happy when Kaguragi showed he finally understood.

It might not be obvious, but it was Kuroda, Kaguragi 's current aide, who found out where the rice was stored during the flashback.

I really like we got to learn how each of them came to power. We knew about Himeno and Rita before, now we got Yanma and Kaguragi's backstory too.

So speaking of which, there's a lot of ways to remove the others from this episode without dumbing them down to actual morons. Their IQ dropped below zero for that onigiri shenanigans. Like just had them fought Grody that whole time should be occupied enough?

Oh, when Kaguragi was swapped into Himeno's body, he grew a wasabi field in Ishabaana's river. It would be a nice call back if these were where the wasabi came from.

That preview... it was so shockingly that it warrant its own preview format.

Fun trivia: Grody and Iroki's actors, Amano Hironari and Hinagata Akiko, are married in real life.

This is the most engaged I've been in a Kaguragi focus episode. Now he's not so much a 'meh' character to me anymore. It's interesting to know that he used to be honest to a fault before.

And I know this makes no sense, but before this episode, I kinda thought Iroki was Kaguragi's ex-wife.

I wish Rita had more screen time in this episode, but I guess her short scene serves as a setup for the next episode. Speaking of which, weirdest. Preview. Ever. I thought mine was weird because I get my episode from TVer usually, but guess the one stuck to the episode itself is weird like that. They released a more normal version of the preview with more spoken dialogue and more shots on the BANDAI YT channel. Also, I had heard there was gonna be a concert episode, but I couldn't have imagined that it was a Rita focus episode. Makes sense considering Yuzuki is into idols and stuff. I just hope her character song isn't another version of "Kilala Smile" (from Donbros).

No one talking about how Suzume looked literally the same 17 years ago? Or did they say something about it before which I'm not recalling?

I really enjoyed this episode, which is something I can only say for a handful of episodes this entire series.

I've always wondered how the Lord of Lying ended up being that way, and now we have an answer. I wasn't expecting his earlier personality to be a 180, but that certainly makes for an interesting contrast. This also finally gives us the connection between Kaguragi and the previous Tofu ruler; now we've finally met the mentor for each of the rulers in some fashion. Though given how flawed they are at the start (despite sitting on their respective thrones for almost 15 years), there's a good argument to be had that they all could have used more training first.

The only real shade I can throw against this episode is that I think it should have come a good 10 episodes earlier. Given that this is basically the pivotal foundation episode for Kaguragi that we've been waiting for since February, having it come so late in the series means there's very little time left to play off of it. Plus, leaving the viewer in the dark for quite this long didn't really do the story any favors.

Iroki was a fun addition as well. Her unwillingness to just tell Kaguragi what was going on is a bit baffling. But in-universe it's very on-brand for the lords of Tofu, and from a production point of view, it obviously makes for some heightened drama. It's a shame she's a one-and-done character, since of all of the previous rulers we've seen, she has the deepest characterization to start with.

Otherwise, of all the locales in King-Ohger, Tofu is the most frustrating. What should be the most verdant and lush environment always ends up looking the worst. The number of shots where the background jitters is absolutely ridiculous.:(

Well to be fair, she's a zombie. So the only way to kill her is to kill the guy resurrecting her. As we've seen from the zombie bugnarok, they won't go down with traditional means. Though why she's not a semi-mindless husk like the other zombies is completely glossed over here.

It's as you said, though: he's a one-note character. I do agree I'd like more Kaguragi, but unless they added an extra dimension to his personality, all more Kaguragi would do is quickly make the audience tire of him. A little bit of his antics goes a long way in this series.
And his sister is funny too. I think she might be the schemer behind the schemer. A lot of the stuff that happens in the God's Wrath era wouldn't have gone down without Suzume's pushing things forward and talking up her brother. I mean the guy's basically in shock when he comes out of the castle
I hadn't thought of that when watching this episode, but you're right. For as much lying as Kaguragi does, all the complex plots seem to involve Suzume. She's been completely aloof throughout the entire series, so it would make sense for her to be the true mastermind of the Dybowski deceptions.

This may be an odd thing to say, but Grody seems surprisingly bad at his job? Granted, the villains aren't supposed to win. But Grody in particular always seems to lose rather quickly. I'm not sure if it's a comment on his lackadaisical style or what, but he always has such low-effort plots that, other than God's Wrath, are easily foiled.

Agreed. This episode was so Kaguragi-focused that it really didn't even need the rest of the team. Which isn't really a good thing given that this is Super Sentai, but the flip side is that including the other heroes when you don't have a true use for them often results in them being used poorly - or in this case, used for full-on idiot ball antics. Though with Kaguragi's conversation being all about death and poisoned rice, I have to imagine someone insisted on inserting some comic relief.
That preview... it was so shockingly that it warrant its own preview format.
That preview really threw me for a loop. Until the title came up alongside the usual outro music, I wasn't sure if it was an ad or what. It's certainly going to be one of the more memorable previews in Super Sentai history.

We've never been told. Only that she's Kaguragi's younger sister. But despite being the old man of the group, he's clearly not meant to be all that old, which makes Suzume all the younger. There's really no winning here; a 17 year gap makes her a young teenager at best, which you which you won't be able to convincingly pull off with a 30 year old woman.

She did appear in the summer movie a little bit, which is unusual because that's not on sale until next month. Just goes to show how much they explained about her.

I mean, the episodes should have been better in general. With so much focus on red, blue, and yellow, Rita and Dybowskii were often left as background or supporting members. A pity since red and blue just aren't that interesting to me, personally

Kind of ironic since Tofu is literally just fantasy Japan. Guess you can't film lush green fields in the middle of winter though

Oh, I guess that makes esnse. Although the Gokkan queen also had some of her mind too

Holy crap
/me looks at wiki page

There's a picture of her and everything. I totally missed that! I thought her name was familiar

Edit: Huh, did they hire her first, adn then she brought her husband along to be Grody? Or did they hire him to be Grody and then his wife got the Iroki role?

I mean, I doubt he's much more than in his 30s, so his sister is probably a few years younger? It's just Suzume always comes off as being in her early 20s to me. /me checks. Oh her actress is 30 going on 31.

Oh? Interesting. I haven't paid any attention to the summer movie since it isn't out on streaming yet. So this isn't the first time the audience has seen her, then (though I assume like most Sentai summer movies, it's basically extra-canonical).

Either way, good to hear we'll be seeing more of her once the movie drops for the rest of us.:)

And hark! Is that a new avatar I spot after 6 years of Misora? :P (Says the person with no avatar)

Red and Blue are both loud, and arguably stupid as well. There's usually always one in a group, but two of them is absolutely draining at times.

If only for that reason, it's not something I'd expect them to be able to film outdoors. Which is why a traditional series would get more creative about choosing shooting locales.

The bigger issue is that their tech just isn't good enough for what they're trying to do. A good motion control and tracking system should eliminate those jitters; the fundamental issue being that the composited background is being panned more than the camera is. Super Sentai is no stranger to chroma keying, so I'm not sure why it's so much more of a problem here.

As an aside, kudos to Anon for subbing and including that virtual production featurette. Up until now, I had been assuming Toei was swapping between using a studio with a green screen and using their (rented) AR wall studio, depending on what type of background is required. My mind is kind of blown that they're actually using the same AR wall for all of their virtual shots. It really has me wondering why they're using chroma keying so much if they have consistent and regular access to a full-fledged AR wall (the featurette mentions long shots, but doesn't really go into enough detail). The difference in image quality between the two modes is nothing short of massive.

Toei's AR wall is fairly small relative to what Disney and Paramount are using. I can only surmise that they need a bigger wall to do more shots in AR mode. And if they want to project false floors, they need an AR floor as well.

As an aside, seeing that featurette has also made it easier to pick out when they accidentally shoot beyond the wall. Which this episode coincidentally has an instance of:

That's an interesting question. Given that Grody's face actor was only introduced in episode 30 (it feels like it's been longer!), it's almost certainly the first scenario. Not only did the summer movie come out first, but last I checked, those things are still filmed incredibly early. Going solely by timing here, the cut-off for hiring an actress for Iroki would have been much sooner than the cut-off for hiring an actor for Grody. So the most plausible scenario is that she brought her husband along.
