I actually liked this? Which I didn't think I would, going in. But the story is surprisingly juicy and the characterization has a lot of bite. Despite the rather goofy gimmick, it's played so straight that it's actually kinda fun? Have we had an alien Rider before? (not sure if Kuuga counts)

This so easily could have gone to the kitschy and annoying, but I'm actually looking forward to seeing next week's episode.

Is that the format of this show? Shouma wanders around like a wandering cowboy? Going from town to town saving people? It's not a bad format

Alright start! I don't feel like I was impressed as Luna, but it's got bones. And hey, main actor who can act really makes a difference. A lot of obvious effort into the first fight, and it all looked pretty good. Yeah the candy theming is silly, but at least there's some ideas behind it.

Won't really know what to think till we see who his main group of cast members are and who the villains are, so I reserve the right to be skeptical, but like Luna I'm actually looking forward to seeing where this goes

being fair, every season so far has started off interesting, and we've had more than a couple end up just ok, so this episode being good doesn't guarantee anything, but at least the fight was creative, as far as initial fights go.

looking forward to where we go from here, because if Shouma's a Granute like the enemy, that raises some questions. like why is his stomach mouth a rider belt and not the gross prop the other guy was wearing? why was his mom attacked? was she human, and thus he's half human? or maybe they're some kind of alien royalty, so their bodies function differently, and that's why he makes the Gochizo? inb4 the evil rider(s) for the season, since that seems to be the way Reiwa seasons work lately, are other special Granutes with uniquely toy-esque stomach mouths. also, will we address the fact that the Gochizo offered themselves up to him, despite the fact that using them seems to kill them, given the couple where we saw them all ghostly with angel wings and halos?

I feel like on this matter, Toei is going to be so obvious that it hurts. The big twist is obviously going to be he's half human, that's why his looks different

I don't know if it's a spoiler, but in the captions his mom has a full human name. Also, Shouma's not exactly the most alien name out there. I mean, Shouma basically says this is where his mom is from. And she talks about not eating "our candy" which I assume means from the human world

That is kind of weird that these little life forms are killing themselves for Shouma's sake. But he does say they're a part of him so...

oh, if that's the case, then we taking bets on if there'll be a "shocking reveal" that making and/or using the gochizo is actually a bad thing, and that's what leads to the inevitable "mid-season hero goes crazy" form?

I'm also wondering if we get Shouma accidentally eating the evil snack cube thing like the hound monster and it leads to problems, like when the one dude in Amazons accidentally ate that one burger.

My theory: The Granute world has the bad gummies that makes people bad. Shouma has not eaten the bad gummies, hence his driver looks different and he isn't bad. That's why mom says don't eat "our (granute) candy"

other theory: Shoma's the half-human bastard son of whoever the Stomach kids' dad is

An interesting start. Seeing the crisp-themed formed next week, I didn't realise it was gonna be more than just sweets, but I've tried to go in blind.

That thing with his suit being damaged and repaired is nice. And much like Ghost's invisibility, it will be dropped almost immediately when they realise it's too much work.

Shouma's species must be pretty resiliant, considering he seems pretty indestructable so far. Or is that something special about him? After all, his Gavv is the only one that's a henshin belt available at all good toy shops, and a few bad ones.

I suppose Nadeshiko from Fourze, kinda?

Hope Komura Junko can write well this year. She usually starts good in the first 10-12 episodes and in the middle, more and more boring in plot, until 4-5 episodes before the end to boost up for the plot.
But the acting of this series is better than Gotchard last year. Shoma acted good as well.

Have him not able to rebuild, so eventually he's just fighting "naked" at one point.

Not bad! I'm not sure I'm going to be able to get used to the default fighting music, and I wouldn't have gone with sentient items right after Gotchard, but it already has plenty of mystery and intrigue befitting a Rider opener. Shouma's personality isn't far outside the usual umbrella, though he does a good job staying likeable despite a candy obsession that could be extremely annoying if done wrong. We'll just have to see where it goes; it didn't blow me away, but it's both entertaining and intriguing.

I'm intrigued. In the premise of all the bright-colored sweets, I was expecting a light-hearted comedy series. Instead, we have nightmare fuel settings: body horrors and people being turned into food and eaten. The enemy also looked vampire-y. The writers were trying very hard to build a horror story on top of a candy-themed show.

Our main guy was actually from the enemy race was also interesting. He wasn't captured and modified, nor he didn't got thrown some random gadgets and ushered to become the hero. I don't think this happened a lot of times before? Maybe Kiva?

The purple Gochizou crying when Shouma tried to eat it through the "wrong" mouth was weirdly adorable. I actually laughed at that scene.

The orange Gochizou actually died after using the finisher.

The settings already exceeded my expectation. I'm intrigued to see how this year will play out.

Let's talk about some of the cast!
First up is Hirano Ayaki, who plays Hiroi Hajime! The name Hiroi Hajime (廣井始) had the same pronunciation as "Starting to picking up" (拾いはじめ). He was the first person to pick up Shouma. When I saw his name in Komura-sensei's script, the meaning connected within two seconds and I burst out laughing.

The MOTW was played by Katagiri Jin. He also played Cockroach Dopant in Kamen Rider W. And here's a shocking fact. He's wearing the same glasses as he did when he appeared in Kamen Rider W!

Kid-Shouma was played by Takagi Haru. I worked with Takagi on Kamen Rider Zi-O: Over Quartzer when he was much younger. When it was decided that Takagi would play Shouma, I still thought of him as a small child. Five years have passed since then (already five years?!?!), and he was now one of the most reliable cast members.

Shouma's mother was played by Nakajima Arisa. She also played Ogami Haruka in Kamen Rider Saber.

Voice actors Sakurai Koki and Shouji Ayu were in charge of the Gochizou, expressing emotions through gibberish random words. The sound team applied filters for each type of candy to crate the varieties. Sakurai and Tokairin were also in charge of the voices of the enemy Stomach agents.


Effects
It's the era of Reiwa, and the Kamen Rider series made use of many CGI technology, but the real appeal was still the power of live-action footage.

The scene where Gavv's armor exploded like gummy candies, was actually filmed by firing water-filled bead bullets in front of the camera. We tested the color of the bullets, the color of the water and the time needed to absorb them... we went through many trials and errors to create a gummy bullet that looked like Gavv's body.


The scene where he kicks the MOTW off the roof was really filmed on the edge of the roof after taking safety precautions.


The battle around the containers with its free-flowing camera angles and speedy movement cannot be done by the actors alone. The action team worked together to create each scene.


The scene where Shouma was thrown into a stack of pallets, was played by stunt actor Nawata by jumping on a trampoline, then the others pushing the collapsed pallets on him.

仮面ライダーWに出演されたときと同じ眼鏡だって！？

回想のシーンで登場の幼いショウマを高木波瑠くんが、
ショウマの母・みちるを中島亜梨沙さんが演じています。
高木くんは今よりもーっとお若い時「劇場版 仮面ライダージオウ Over Quartzer」でご一緒していて、ショウマが知念くんに決まったときから、幼少期なら…と頭に浮かんだお方。
あの時から5年が経ち(もう5年？！？！)、魔王級に頼もしいキャストの1人です。
そして「仮面ライダーセイバー」では尾上晴香役でご出演されていた中島さん。

声優の櫻井皓基さんと東海林亜祐さんお二人でたくさんのゴチゾウを分担、
ジブリッシュ（でたらめ言葉）で感情を表現していただきつつ、音響チームにお菓子の種類ごとのフィルターを施してもらうことでバリエーションを生み出しています。一生懸命おしゃべりしている感じでゴチゾウへの愛おしさ増大。
また、ゴチゾウと姿はかなり違いますが、
ストマック家エージェントの声も櫻井さんと東海林さんにご担当いただいております。

華やかなCG技術を駆使している仮面ライダーシリーズですが、実写だからこそのパワーがある画面もまた醍醐味。
ガヴの装甲がグミのようにハジける演出は、
水を含んだビーズ弾をカメラ前に実際に飛ばして撮影しています。

I greatly dislike Toei's puns though. Gochizo is a combination of Gochisou (a feast 御馳走) and Zou (guts 臓). Yes, Gochizo are Shouma's treat organs
