Oh, this episode has started on a dark turn considering the world building

Glasses boy is definitely going to be a schemer

They added Wonka to the opening. Wonder if Sachika will have her hair bleached the same way all year long

is there house big or small for Japan? Seems spacious

I feel pretty suspicious of Wonka. How does he know all this to this level of detail? Japan, loving shrinking people and monsters with freeze drying technique for over 20 years

Oh, it feels rare for a Kamen Rider character to actually have an emotional reaction to something like learning a family memory died. Hanto is instantly more interesting in three episodes than the three Gotchard Riders in 50. Writing is so underrated at Toei

Shouma always getting the candy poops. Wait, is that 10 year old marshmallow? Also how rich are these old dudes

Hanto's boss is acting the way you'd expect if he's actually a monster

I wonder if there's a pattern with the agent masks

I do like that we've got goth twins this year because obviously they liked the twins from last year. Wait, they're on a first name basis. Why don't they know who the red Gavv owner is then? Oh they do and it's uniquely Shouma's (all stuff we could have guessed but it's nice to hear said out loud)

Everyone's monster forms! Neat! Glotta seems like the most obviously just the lady wearing a big (big) mask. Interesting that we don't see whose tongues are the ones attacking them

Kind of a weak yell from Shouma. Guess that's why we don't usually see the reaction

LOL, why are we in first person agent shooting mode?

Gavv is really getting bounced around a lot today. Kind of dislike that Gavv interacts with the sound effects. He's not a toon

Feel bad for the old couple in this story, who are losing another son

And that's the episode isn't it? Credits to Komura for telling a short story about this couple, while also using it to move the main plot forward for both Shouma and Hanto. As much as I liked the characters for Gotchard, the plot was never anything to stick to since nothing ever had consequences (outside of the Sabimaru turns evil episode, which you guys rated the highest rated episode of that series)

Shouma still hasn't quite figured out what he wants to do, but I do feel like this wandering arc is coming to an end and something more focused will line up for him. Meanwhile, Hanto is taking step by step toward his own future, and it's kind of fun anticipating how all the main characters are going to eventually meet. I don't know if the dialogue was anything special, but I think this was a solidly plotted episode, so that gets a 5 star from me

Edit:
Just to gush a bit more, Wonka is so well written. Just the callous oblivious way that he talks. Then the moment where he reads the room and changes the subject to "Hey, I bet you want to be a test subject, I mean a Rider right?" Good stuff

Also to add to the tragedy, Shouma is intentionally leaving the old couple so they don't get eaten, yes. But also, he's doing so in a way that will definitely make them sadder, and thus not as happy, so they're not targeted by the Granuto. It's world building that really makes the "This is for your own good" aspect really debatable

Oh, interesting that Shita calls Shouma the monster

That's 4/4 episodes so far that Shouma's gotten picked up and fed after a chance meetup, though I see this as subtle humor rather than lazy writing. The independent researcher/scientist is already an intriguing character and a welcome addition to the cast, too. I like the parallel between Shouma and Hanto both losing their mothers; not sure if they'll call attention to it later, but I think it works better letting the audience connect the dots this way. (Also, yikes; I was sure Shouma's mom would stay crystallized, but that's a pretty clear death. KR visuals often lie about the tone, but ep4 is surprisingly early for that kind of edge.)

Truth be told, I wasn't betting on this series leaning into the tragedy aspect of Kamen Rider. I don't think any of the entries I've seen quite captured the spirit of the original, literally a MotW gone rogue, the way Gavv has: Shouma's an incredibly friendly character, but he feels like he can't stay with people or else he'd keep them from being snacks. Both Ichigo and Gavv have relationships and even friends, but are still, at least at the show's start, utterly alone in their predicament.

I sort of feel like that's part of the setup. I wouldn't fault them for it since it's clearly intentional and each person Shouma meets definitely teaches him something new and important

wait.... Shouma's fueled by snacks, and he keeps getting picked up after passing out.

he's diabetic, and he keeps suffering from low blood sugar.

his first power up is going to be an insulin shot.

rewatching the episode, some thoughts:

Nyelv mentions "surgery" and the part-timers maybe dying because they're "not compatible." Not!Jyuran discusses the idea that the tongue thing shrink wrapping humans is new. Hanto saw a Granuto AS a Granuto, despite the fact that the three from previous episodes were able to do their tongue thing in human form.

given all of that, I feel safe assuming:
a) Granuto can't disguise as humans at all naturally, and it's entirely a technological thing.
b) the belts are an invention of the stomach family, or at least a privilege of the rich, and they were surgically implanted in the part timers
c) that's why the part timers' gavvs were full of wires

given all of that, I'm also assuming that Shouma was born without a gavv, and just had a normal human looking body, and his gavv is 100% artificial, given the siblings were surprised he had any Granuto stuff going on.

I don't remember compatibility mentioned, I think he was worried that his tweak to the surgery had resulted in them dying. That's why he's like "hmm, I better look over my designs". It's interseting because while the part timer's gavvs are more organic looking, you definitely can see there's still mechanical parts to it. And the familys are entirely artificial

The white marshmallow suit was so smoothly white and pleasant to look at. It looked like plastic so it's easier to deal with dirt. I wonder how long they can keep it snow white color.

It's interesting that Gavv's forms are not all powerful and have drawbacks. The poppin armor can break, the zaku sword can only cut at certain angle and marshmallow's hands can't really hold things. It also makes for some interesting fight scenes, like Gavv deliberately breaking his shoulder pad to distract the agent to break free.

Lab guy reading the room and changing the subject asking Hanto if he wanted to be a Rider test subject was also a highlight for me. It shows what type of character he is with just one line.

Was the agent keeping an eye on Hanto or his boss?

So we got Shouma's escape story. The events went just as expected given the flashbacks before, so I'm glad they didn't try to drag this "mystery" out. The only thing I'm surprised was the mom actually got crushed. I'd thought they'd brainwash her and turned her into some future enemy.

I felt really sad of the old couple. Losing a son a second time really hurts. And like Take said, leaving without even properly saying goodbye added to that sadness. Shouma wanted to make people happy, but at the same time he can't because they'll be targeted by the Granuto. I'm interested to see how he's going to come to terms with that.

🍩 This week's pick-up and snacks!
The Shouma pick-up relay has been passed on from a boy, to a gal boss, to a scary-looking man... This time, the baton has been passed to a kind-hearted elderly couple who ran a farm in the countryside.

For Shouma, who has never had a normal life with his family, the time he spent with them must have been truly happy. Shouma's character makes adults think about how happy they would be to have a son like that.

The same goes for Chinen-kun, Shouma's actor. He got really excited to everything he saw on set, making you wonder if he's really Shouma at heart.
Image Image

The elderly couple were played by Hanagasaki Koichi and Isonishi Maki. They are both veteran actors, but they were very kind towards Chinen-kun.

The marshmallows were store-bought, but the packaging was made specially for the show based on the Gochizo design! The packaging were really cute, so we hope you'll pay attention to it as well as the candies that came inside! There were two marshmallows inside with slightly different colors and different flavors, and so two Gochizo were born.

Chinen's reaction created a happy atmosphere. It really expressed the theme of the show "Snacks are a symbol of happiness."

🍫 Welcome to the Suga Laboratory
After the store HappyPare, this is another regular set of Kamen Rider Gavv. The laboratory has a retro feel, designed and created by art director Fukuzawa.

It has a diverse atmosphere, and you'll see a lot of suspicious things from various genres, such as a Tsuchinoko specimens, parasites diagrams and clippings of UMA/UFO articles.

There's also a row of skylight. The lab's actually semi-underground.

🍪 Shita and Jeebh
Their visual has caused a lot of buzz since it was released, but in reality Jeebh is the third son of the Stomach family, and Shita is the second daughter. Their genders and clothing are reversed. On the same note, Kawasaki's (Shita) acting and lines are muscular based and Koga's (Jeebh) feminine based.

Although they didn't face off with Shouma this time, they seemed to have a deep connection with him, so please look forward to future developments.

🍬 Marshmallow
His fighting style made use of the elasticity of a marshmallow, and there were playful action scenes, such as hanging from the "fluffy" word effect!

Personally, I thought it was super cute when Gavv's mitten-like hands tried to hold the blade but couldn't.

The one who dealt the final blow was Marumellow Gochizo! It strengthened Gavv's body like Kickingummy Assist and Punchingummy Assist to create a massive, impactful body. Contrary to his cute appearance, he defeated powerful foes with s merciless rolling attack!

Solid episode. Lots of exposition, but done neatly in that we're mostly shown, not told. Hanto's actor is pretty good, the scene where he slowly tears up upon realising that his mother might've died is very well acted. Weird science guy is interesting, something about him feels very Urahara-like (to make a Bleach reference). Maybe there's more to him than meets the eye.

Surprised that we got to see all the forms of the main villains this early on. Some are pretty sick, while some are kinda meh. Shouma's actor didn't emote as well as Hanto's did upon seeing his mother's demise right in front of him, but that's just a little nitpick on my side.

Pleasantly surprised at how efficient the Agents are. They look like typical KR goons that got swept away with a few kicks, but they actually put up a very decent fight. Wonder will we get to see even higher ranking Agents who are more skilled.

Old couple story is kinda heartwarming. I really like how each individual that Shouma met episode by episode teaches him something about humanity. There's something profound with Shouma leaving the old couple to not put them in danger, while also intentionally making them sad so they appeal less to the Granutes. Good writing really does carry a show a long way, even one centered on candies.

Another 5/5 from me.
Complete. Start Up. 3. 2. 1. Time Out. Reformation.

So basically the youngest of the kids. I wonder what the order is? Lango and Glotta are probably at the top. Nyelv is the middle child. But who's next? Jeebh or Shita? And where does Shouma fit into this?

Nobody is seeding the torrent right now, so I am stuck at 98%. It sounds like it's going to be a fun episode though, when it finally finishes downloading.

Edit: Thanks to whomever it was that hopped on and started seeding the episode again. It finally finished the last 2%, so that I could watch it. I think that I enjoyed this episode more than the third, not just because we got a new form, but because we got more backstory, and plot. I also noticed a cookie minion and a Senbei minion at the end of the episode. It's almost like they drop in a few minions that we have never seen before, as hints about what his new forms might be. There was also one that looked like it might be a lollipop form. Also, this is probably the first episode where he didn't use his four wheeler, or his motorcycle. I know that they are trying to make it ominous about the person standing over him at the end of the episode, but something tells me that it's probably going to be the woman from episode two, or the detective guy looking for his mom. The fight scenes in this have all been very creative so far, I feel like that FPS shot of the agent shooting at Gavv was pretty goofy. Also, the slow motion and the bullet time stuff reminded me a lot of the stuff that they used to do on Power Rangers (R.I.P.) a lot, after the first Matrix movie came out.

Also, where did Gavv get that jacket, and that different colored hoodie from? And, why did they just suddenly disappear and have him in his regular old blue hoodie again?

Finally caught up. Kinda like the pace of the story so far because it doesnt feel like they're trying to stretch the story with unnecessary fillers.

I like the random encounter for every episode. It wont last but so far its fun. Most probably they will circle back to this. Something like...i make people happy = people become target --> i dont make them happy = they dont become target --> no, i want people to be happy therefore i need to be strong to protect them --> all of them happy together in the last episode.

Yup. Had this in mind as well while watching so most probably it was a setup especially with the agents looking from afar. Another mystery to be hooked on.

Yeah. Was interested with the hierarchy as well. Agents. Part timers. Full timers? Managers? CFO? CTO?

Also, the mentioning of the minions was also interesting. "I thought that loser wasn't able to use them (the minions)". I wonder if they too are able to produce minions when they eat sweets or each of them has their specific food type. More mystery to be hooked on.
